flyingfleasteve
The saddle has now also been finished and looks great! I took the advantage of the good weather and started applying stencils and transfers.......
welbike
Very nice, but one word of advice, the tanktop transfers are a bit old it seems, and don't adhere well to the matte paintfinishes, I had to redo it, and first spray a clear highgloss coat on, then apply transfer, then finish with petrol resistant matte clearcoat. Cheers, Lex First picture with clearcoat under the transfer, second one of transfer that didn't adhere well. also placement sizes from my NOS tank. flyingfleasteve
Thanks Lex! Yes I did have a few minor issues with my transfers. I am pleased to say the Famous James ML is now finished (We nearly) I cannot quiet believe it! I want to say a massive thank you to each and everyone of you who has taken the time to get involved and provide me with such great advice and information! Without you all I would of never finished the bike! There are a few shiny bits I know should be painted but I am really pleased with the end result! Ron I am ready to meet you on that race track now 😉 So as some of you no I already have my next project lined up.....watch this space!

flyingfleasteve
Hi all . I am currently searching out the correct air maze air filter for this bike. Can anyone confirm how many rivits are used to hold/join the filter mesh together? Hope this makes sense?
welbike
I got these pictures, think 2? everybody turns the rivets to the underside, where you can't see them! Cheers, Lex
flyingfleasteve
Thanks Lex! I have turnt into a rivit counter 😂
Ron
I can't see any rivets on either of mine. The filter on my Flea has three support bars between the top and bottom caps, maybe the join is behind one of the bars. The filter on my ML has no support bars and seems to have a wire staple to join the mesh ends. I can't really see properly in situ, I would need to remove and strip them for closer inspection. welbike
I will check mine, but Ron, the one on your Flea is modified I seem to remember. Lex
Ron
Is it though Lex? I see those bars in original pictures. Ron
welbike
Ok, there must have been 2 types then, but I thought you added one of Arnauds plates to one of your filters? Lex
Ron
Oh yes. Both my filters have Arnaud's plates. Ron
welbike
I'm not so sure if I look at the original picture though?? Looked at all my other pictures too, and cannot find another with the 2 bars, will take a picture of a dissasembled one though. Ron
You have a better resolution than me Lex. I think I can see 3 rivets for the gauze? Might have to remake my Flea filter. Ron
welbike
It could just be a piece of dirt on the negative, never seen one with 3 rivets! and it's not neccesery for the aplication either. See pictures of the internal framework on an original filter, and the rivets on my filter, that is 100% original, bought from Villiers services 20 years ago when they had 3-4 NOS ones, and I bought them all, well for 10 quid a piece, I could not let them fester away in their dusty bins.... Ron
Thanks Lex. That similar to the one on my ML. However the internals are somewhat different on the one on my Flea and the differences don't look home made. It makes me think that there are different versions .....Maybe post war? I'll take it apart sometime for a look see. Ron
flyingfleasteve
Interesting.... I was of the opinion there were two types of filter for the Flea.....

welbike
I had a look at my parts lists, as far as I know, only one number for James and Flea, but I don't have all of them, is there someone who has the missing one(s)?? Flea Contract Part No. S831 ? C14775 ? S1945 ? (only have the 1943 price list for this) S6602 MT12/VS/V496E S7112 MT12/VS/V496E James Contract Part No. S1718 ? S1833 ? S1972 MT12/VS/V496E S5571 MT12/VS/V496E S6603 ? S7173 ? S8236 ? 1947 civvy Maze Type Cheers, Lex
Ron
Lex in your original £10 filters, is it a rivet in the center of the end cap? If so, how can you dismantle it? Ron
welbike
I don't know, but there is a rivet, you'd have to grind it off, or drill it out from the inside, and find a blind rivet to replace it, or have a little bolt turned with a round flat head to replace it.
