Bob Grundy
I don't know how it can come to a hundred grand for the engines to be put in a state to cross the channel. Its all too familier for charities to say so and so project will cost £XXXX things can always be done for less.

As you rightly say Bob, regreatably as we know charities have great intentions but so very often are big time waisters of cash on many projects by not shopping around enough but i do wish the project well. Nick Johns
When MGB 81 was being restored 14 years ago it was fitted with three MAN diesel engines, can't be that expensive to get those sorted, last year the trust wanted £70k to get the vessel ready, now gone up to £100k Edited December 22, 2013 by Nick Johns
R Cubed
Original engine fitment were 3 American Packard engines producing 3600 HP giving a top speed of 50 MPH and carrying 10 tons of aviation fuel !!!!!!!! Surly you could fit 3 new engines for less than £100,
paulbrook
You can easily spend 10K on a big engine overhaul plus there will be all the cooling and propulsion gear to fettle as well. Add to that the cost of getting them out and back in again and I don't think 100K is that far short of the mark, bearing in mind there are three of them. Just my two pennorth. Good luck to them I say!
redneck
£100k on a boat like that is small change. Lift out and relaunch will cost £2k at least, yard fees ashore on top of that, crane hire to lift out the engines £1k then replace. That is all before you start doing any refurbishment.... Bob Grundy
Is that so. then there is some greedy people out there. If they cannot find the money then they don't cross the channel do they....?
Nick Johns
I wonder what the engine problems are? did some research and found that MGB 81's three MAN diesel engines were overhauled by MAN and donated to the boat restoration, they have had very little use since its re launching Edited December 24, 2013 by Nick Johns
ruxy
I did not like the BBC propaganda film , a "skipper" with a rather large Stilson at work (does that tell a story , to me it does , but then I was a MN engineer) , if he had been described as the "engineer" with a Bahco wrench no longer than 8" in his hand , then it would have looked better LoL
