Selling A Landy!!

Sylvester

Question

Hi Folks,

This is just a general question! But...I have been trying to sell my airportable for quite a while now, but....No taker's! What I would like to know is....what am I doing wrong!!!

It's up for 4000, I paid 3500, but have since rebuilt it onto a new (Not Brand new but B.....Good condition) Chassis, done a lot of work on it all new brake bits, pipes etc...Brand new FFR tilt and tilt kit,etc....Spent quite a bit doing all this but.....No body seems interested! Any suggestions greatly appreciated!

One very dissapointed landy seller!! :)

Regards

Fred

Might be coz its already had all the work done on it. There are a lot of landys generally for sale for overhaul at the moment at rock bottom prices, so the market for finished projects is not so good.

Most people buying a landy want it to work on and make their own mark on.

Unless you target the people who collect ex military cars or equipment, you may still have a bit of a long job selling.

Is the price your asking in the same bracket as other vehicles of the same type/age/condition? If you are asking too much compared to others, there may not be the interest, unless you have a special or rare model or one with an interesting history.

Plenty of action photos and close ups will help to show what your offering.

that's always a difficult one with Landrovers...:undecided:

........I've bought and sold dozens in my life and have to admit to still not really being able to fathom how folk 'price' them.........I've seen some very desirable vehicles both civvy and ex army SWBs ,LWBs and Lightweights go for what can only described as 'incredible' sums........ but equally so, I've seen some go for what can only be a real 'bargain' price..... I would have thought from what you say (not having looked at the vehicle in question of course ) your price is about right.......but?!? :undecided: I'd suggest (if you haven't done so already of course) maybe advertising it in the 'high end' of the market in a magazine such as 'Landrover Owner'.......adverts in such mags seem to consistently be priced way higher than I can sell vehicles for 'on the street'...

It doesn't just apply to whole vehicles either ....around my way, a secondhand Landrover diff is still only worth about 60 quid ....and yet I could point you in the direction of a number of companies in those magazines that apparently get £120 + VAT all day long for one...and have met in my travels many folk that have (not round this way though ! haha) paid such money too ....so???

My observation would be its a buyers market at the moment. I'm not sure many people have the spare cash for a 'toy' at the moment (or are reluctant to tie up what money they have due to a feeling of insecurity), combined with fuel costs depressing the market particularly for 'thirsty' vehicles. With anything a bit unusual (and for most car drivers that would include a lightweight) I think the key is being patient if you can. I have a freind who sells used cars as part of his garage business and he plans on the basis of carrying stock for as long as 3 months - and thats for something like an everyday VV Golf - so something that isn't main stream can take even longer if you are holding out for the best price.

The other option is to accept a Landie is not so much a car that one buys and sells like other vehicles but more like a pet - flawed possibly but they find a way into your heart! It obviously doesn't want to go...:cool2:

totally agree Andy....mind you .having said folk are 'reluctant to spend' at the moment ?. it all rather depends on what you are selling ...I have a mate who specialises in bespoke Ford Escort Rally cars ..he'll build you either a MK1 or Mk2 Escort to an absolutely incredible specification and..... prices start (for a very basic simple clubman model) around the £80 grand .....and go anywhere up towards £200,000 (yes I'm serious !) and.?.......he's stacked out with work and finds it difficult to meet all the orders he is getting :)..also I read somewhere just after Xmas that seriously 'high end' cars such as Astons/Ferraris etc are selling better now than they have for the last 5 years or so????

....mind you ...like I said about Landrover diffs.....not many Aston's being sold to folk round here ! :D

Fred how original is it?

Sometimes owners like to add their own embellishments at the expense of original fittings. So you do see series Rovers with Wolf wheels, wheel arch extrusions, a dash with civilian fittings, a 24v FFR that has been downgraded to 12v complete with a novel wiring system.

All these things an owner is perfectly entitled to do of course & it may have been fun & worked well for a particular owner, but is greatly devalues it in the eyes of many would be purchasers. (No offence if none of the above applies!)

Fred, having bought, done up, and eventually sold my v original 12v Lightweight, for 3,500 last year, it appears to me that with all the work you apparently had to do to yours, your buying price was pretty steep! So you are now selling at pretty much top dollar for this vehicle and as others have said, it's a buyers market at this end. But let's face it, you will never make money on restoration - you just have to accept that you have done your bit to preserve a bit of history. I actually bought mine for 1,200 about five years ago which meant I did not lose too much money - more than compensated by the satisfaction of making a landie on the edge of extinction into a nice vehicle that was picked out in the Bletring arena as the type GS. If you really want to sell, IMHO you will need to lower your price by at least 500...........or maybe wait for Summer and the Recovery?!

I can only add to the general consensus on this one, I spent many hours and many ££££ getting my old landie back on the road, at the end of it all I just about broke even when I sold it.

I bought it as a non running project and sold it up and running but with plenty still to do for the next person to call it a project.... I did keep the numberplate though :-\
