  1. After a long hiatus, some radiotherapy and chemotherapy, and an unbelievable number of scans and xrays, I have finally got back into doing all this craziness with tents and stuff. I am in the process of building an expedition trailer which will be long enough to carry the parts for this tent, and a quad bike around, for when I start my tour of archaeological and metal detecting sites in the north of the uk and scotland. The FOI request was a complete bust, they could not find any manuals or instructions for assembling this tent. So Im going to go with the primer supplied above. Having made a copy of this frame from tent poles, I have cut the weight down to a manageable 150kg. I will now be selling the original tent and frame for around £500 if anyone's interested.
  2. Withams have a 90 LHD NA diesel on their MODSALES website at the moment. They export landys so this could be possible. Most of their other defenders are 110's but they are all tythonus victims so they are all in pretty good uprated nick. Eric
  3. Got home after driving solidly for 10 hours, with a break in the middle to get the crate on the trailer. Now I've opened and unpacked the thing, and about half the weight was the wood crate. Im sure this would fit into a much smaller and lighter package. The frame is unnecessarily complex and weighty, it could have been constructed of thinner walled tubes and the jointing hardware reduced. Ill be making some copies of the tubes in the next few weeks so I can fiddle with the fitting and fettling a bit to see if I can make it simpler and lighter. Ive left a FOI request for an assembly handbook on the GOV.UK website. If I get a useable response Ill make copies available to other users/buyers. Eric
  4. Just a warning to those thinking of buying a complete shelter with poles etc. I'm driving down to South Wales at the moment with one on the back of my trailer. Scaring the living bejeezus out of me and all other road users! The crate it comes in is 9feet by 4feet by 1.5feet and weighs in at 280 kg! My trailer is only 6feet by 4.5 feet on a transit axle with no brakes. Don't tell me plod... me and the loader at Withams could only just lift the end of it together, had to use a fork lift in the end. gonba have to crack the crate on the trailer at the other end to get this off.   5. Blimey, I assume you had to work all that out for yourself? I haven't found any instruction manuals for this shelter anywhere yet, and they don't supply one with the kit as far as I can tell. Thanks for going to the trouble of doing this, it's much appreciated. I'll be driving to Grantham on Wednesday to pick up another one of these with a frame included. Once I've got a complete set of frame parts, I plan to make up some duplicate frames from the seventy odd tent poles I got last time. I've become pretty good at cutting and welding aluminium tubes. Maybe then I can sell the other 4 canvases without making a loss! Cheers for this. Eric
  6. I think I've cracked it. Found an old classified ad for a Bedford truck side canvas shelter from about 3 years ago. It has exactly the same frame sections and connectors as I have, including the multiples of three tubing supports, and the lashing wires are the same. Only difference is I've also got all the canvases to go with it, including the side and end door flap sections. Result. Now I know how to describe it. This is is the picture of the assembled frame from the old ad. Eric
  7. This is my best effort so far on assembling the frame parts I have. The canvas these came packed with is a FV693240, I think thats a 12x12 foot canvas shelter. I have the roof, long side extension canvas and 3 end sections, 2 of which will clip together and form a door flap at one end of the shelter, the other one is older and much used and will only form one side of the tent flap.
  8. I've unpacked one of the canvases from its plastic bag. There are no instructions included which seems a bit mean. There are two canvas window sheets that clip onto the two side windows as blackouts. They both have fv436 printed on them, which as far as I can find out is an APC vehicle which was used as a command and control truck, the shelter would have attached to the rear of the vehicle. Im going to try draping the whole thing over a 3metre by 3metre gazebo frame to see what it's like assembled. If I have to trim the gazebo poles to fit it, that's easy enough with a pipe cutter. This will give me a rough idea what dimensions I need for the frame. watch this space:red: Eric
  9. Could I trouble you for a list of poles and their measurements, and connectors you have in your package? I might have more chance of getting these together to make a complete shelter if I actually knew what I should have. A photo of the poles would be really great if you can manage it. I didn't get any straight connectors at all, and I seem to have three of everything including the long poles which should be in a set of 4 I think. Cheers Eric
  10. Yes, I've tried this link several times but even the bit near the end doesn't really help coz the frame I have doesn't really match any of these either. I don't have enough 3 way or one way connectors to follow these plans. but thanks for the reply anyway. Eric
  11. I've searched everywhere online for details of how these go together but they don't seem to have made it into anyone's list of supported equipment. This is kind of a last ditch attempt to get advice from anyone who might know about them before I have a complete mental breakdown holding aluminium tubes and connectors! i put what I thought was an unsuccessful bid in on the Witham MOD Sales auction site, my bid didn't reach the reserve price so I forgot about it. Then the auctioneer dropped the reserve to my bid and I ended up having to pay for them. I am now the proud owner of 4 unissued closed command 8x8 foot canvas shelters with no frames, and a stillage containing 72 tent poles, two large water containers and an issued and "complete" tent and frame set that has so far defied my attempts to assemble into a useable shelter. I'm usually pretty good at puzzles but the bits of frame I've got will not go together in any recognisable way that I can decipher. I've pretty much come to the conclusion that I've only actually got part of the set that I would need. So, would anyone on here have a clue where I can get a instruction book or assembly instructions for a frame tent that seems to have three of everything and is sending me Bat-**** crazy? I'm going for a lie down in a darkened room! Eric
  12. Might be coz its already had all the work done on it. There are a lot of landys generally for sale for overhaul at the moment at rock bottom prices, so the market for finished projects is not so good. Most people buying a landy want it to work on and make their own mark on. Unless you target the people who collect ex military cars or equipment, you may still have a bit of a long job selling. Is the price your asking in the same bracket as other vehicles of the same type/age/condition? If you are asking too much compared to others, there may not be the interest, unless you have a special or rare model or one with an interesting history. Plenty of action photos and close ups will help to show what your offering. Eric
  13. Yes very useful. From what I can tell, I have Salisbury axles front and rear, and a very heavy duty chassis which looks in reasonable nick considering the age of the vehicle. All the bits I have seen for the pod on Bay of E are anything from £50 to £400 complete. I have already got most of the parts to replace the bulkhead, windscreen,floors, doors, dash and seats. From what I can tell from just images, the pod forms a straight frame from chassis to roofline behind the front door frame so the standard series doors I have may have to have a frame shaped around them and attached to the pod. Is there such a thing as a lower tub side panel that would fit around the pod bottom to give the side a more land rover defender like curve? Eric
  14. Think Ive sussed most of it now. The big desert tent is a vehicle camo throwover, and I think the green canvas is actually a landrover WMIK winterising cover. It would fit over the extended roll bars and has circular extensions to fit over the weapon ring, with attachments and cords where the roll cage bars would meet the chassis. It sits nicely over the landy cabin and covers down to where the door tops would be on a roofless/soft top vehicle. Its a bit like a vehicle top tent. Very useful.
  15. Ok, these are the best I can do with the technology to hand. This is a wide angle shot of the desert camo tent. You can see the zipped flap on the top of the edge this side. And this is the green canvas, Looking at it now, I think I may have it on backwards. It is more than long enough to cover the cabin on the Landy. And finally the tank jump leads, And ID number.......
  16. I measured the larger tent thing, It is 20 feet long by 8 feet wide and 8 feet high. there are straps and clips on each side to allow the sides to be rolled up and secured. I took some pictures on my phone but they are not brilliant because I cant get far enough away from it to get enough detail in, but I will post them later when I can get to my laptop. The thick copper leads have a part number on the back of the end connectors, FV564833. Is that any good to anyone? Eric
  17. Hope you Military types can help with this one. I bought a box of WMIK CES kit from withams, expecting some roll cage bars and weapons mounts etc, but have ended up with a collection of canvases and leads I cant identify. Some of them I can use but there are a couple of large canvases I cant work out. One is a newish nato green heavy duty canvas, long enough to cover a 110 but has a diagonal flap along each side which doesnt match any vehicles I know of. It has a velcro closure at the rear which lines up with the defender door but there are no attatchments at the front for the screen loops or pips. The other one is a desert sand colour heavy duty canvas tent which has door flaps at either end, each flap has 6 buckle straps set on the outside, and a large zipped flap above the flap on one end big enough to act as another door. The whole tent thingy more that covers a 110 van and has elasticated lines running all around the base with hook attachments at the ends. I can post some photos later if anyone needs them to help identify them In the box also were 2 heavy duty body bags(!) and 6 body blankets which are essentially green plastic tarps with cotton lining. Obviously essential for realism when doing up a military vehicle! Oh and I have two tank jump leads going spare if anyones interested. Probably worth about £40 in scrap for the copper and brass fittings at each end. Free to anyone who has a tank they will fit and wants to collect them from South Wales or a donation to the site plus postage.
  18. Hi, I have a Sankey single axle disk braked trailer. I had to move the master cylinder to extend the draw bar and hunted around for ages to get the hydraulics replaced. In the end I went to a local hydraulics repair firm and they made me up a new set of brake pipes and connectors. I understand the original cylinder/pipe/slave and disk brakes were from a variety of vehicles. The cylinder is from an old transit type, the pipes were land rover, the slave was ford scorpio and the disks and callipers were scorpio parts turned down to size. I have checked my hubs and they seem to be in pretty good condition and not leaking. Witham have some wide track sankey 3/4 ton trailers and unissued trailer tubs in their auction site at the moment. £250 for a complete trailer aint a bad price. Eric
  19. Hi all, I have been looking at snatch landrover pods for sale on fleabay and wondered if the pod is all steel construction or is it made of lighter material. The information I have found so far is that it is a composite material but no further details. I have a 1988 110 that has a decent chassis and would like to make up a snatch replica, mainly because it has almost standing room in the rear so I could use it as an off road camper. I will be towing a sankey 3/4 ton mark 4 trailer so do I need to upgrade the engine to a V8 or can the original engine pull it along off road? (Sorry if I am hijacking the thread, please feel free to move this to an appropriate thread mr adjudicator.) Eric
  20. Greetings, my name is Eric, some call me Meatslicer (you dont want to know why). I am a frustrated engineer who couldnt get onto an apprenticeship from school because I was allergic to deisel. Ended up training as a nurse and working for years in the NHS. My hobbies include building unusual things to fill my ever shrinking garden and drive, including an observatory for my son, a furnace for melting bronze and alluminium, an overland trailer, which doubles as a caravan for long weekends away metal detecting and doing archaeological digs, made from a Sankey 3/4 ton trailer and landrover roof and sides. I am always checking out old military vehicles and the only thing that has stopped me buying a saracen from witham is the transport cost and the lack of space to park it in my front garden. My latest project is to strip down a landrover 110 to the chassis and rebuild it as a replica snatch or special forces soft top. Havent decided yet until the strip down is done and I can see how much weight the chassis can take. All this will be done on my drive in full view of some very up tight and nosey neighbours who will be having kittens while I have effectively a scrap vehicle outside their living room window.:cool2::cry: Nice to find other like minded peeps.
