  1. You could always try your local garage:cool2:
  2. Mike are you saying that some Mountaineers had a Constructor type transfer box which would disconnect the drive to the axles and drive the winch via a chain? The ones I have seen have all had a single speed transposing box similar to Explorer but with a rear axle drive in line with the front one. You say later ones but I doubt there are many built after 'D' reg?? Later features included hydraulic power steering and the option of Constructor coil sprung front suspension.
  3. Yes, they are French SOMA and totally different to Rockwell. I bought an entire rear bogie from a low mileage re-fueller but the centre diff is seized due to the actuator having been fitted incorrectly and the innards are corroded due to standing for a long period. All I have ended up with is a few spare drums, halfshafts, hubs and some monster 11 leaf springs which strangely are far heavier than the 8 leaf tractor version.
  4. In the old days when surplus MV stock was returned to Bicester for auction the Ministry man would come to the auction, sit alongside the auctioneer and reject any sales that did not reach his reserve, so he certainly used to exist. The S26s were expected to sell to African buyers but they showed no interest in this batch. I am looking for a pair of good 4.79:1 diffs from an RAF S26 re-fueller as the ones I bought are in a poor state; if anyone knows of any NOS ones perhaps they could let me know.
  5. Tony, there is a good picture of one in Tugs of War reg. RGX 378, it is listed as FV12105 and has the same bumper, swept back front arches and rear lockers as the FV12102 30t tractor like my old one.
  6. I can see by the reduced chassis at the rear that it was an artic tractor, but has it got the clumsy offset cab?
  7. The man from the Ministry must have dropped his reserve, it was £5k just a few weeks ago.
  8. Non Jim, its a diesel - 680 PP by the looks of it:)
  9. Thanks FV11301, that is definitely my old one, I spent hours making those bonnet side panels and collecting parts for it including 11 brand new tyres. Daz, it hasn't had a rear body removed, it is a fifth wheel tractor and just the subframe and fifth wheel have been removed.
  10. Chassis was 9281 and the C6 Rolls is essentially the basis of the Eagle.
  11. From memory there is a row of 4 warning lights, one for each cross axle diff and one for the inter-axle rear diff.
  12. Well done Daz, I am almost sure that is my old Constructor, although it was a C6 rather than Eagle when I had it. Does he still own it?
  13. You can just make him out with the pruning cutters:)
  14. Nick, you could try Parry Davies from the Scammell Register, he looks after all the manuals and can supply on CD or hard copy. ParryDavis@aol.com
  15. I have noticed that several of you have used needle guns rather than sandblasting. What are the pros and cons and can anyone suggest a decent one; I have seen the Sealey on offer for £60 or so.
  16. I viewed that one Andy but it glows in the dark. I seem to remember it had nominal mileage, about 11k.
  17. Amazon (CR100)/Crusader comparison: http://hmvf.co.uk/forumvb/showpost.php?p=90914&postcount=38
  18. I'll see what I can do when I am next down that way.
  19. Thanks Richard, I was using the 'search the catalogue' section and it wasn't having it.
  20. http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/search.asp Richard, I have tried most combinations of the above but failed to find the document.
  21. Switch is a 3 terminal single pole 2 way so can be used as a dip switch or a simple on/off using 2 terminals.
  22. Round switch base 2-5/8" dia, 3 mounting holes with a lever sticking out of the side? http://209.85.229.132/search?q=cache:kGwhTNMoTnYJ:https://www.holden.co.uk/displayproduct.asp%3Fsg%3D%26pgCode%3D020%26sgName%3DElectrical%26pgName%3DSwitches%26agCode%3D0550%26agName%3DMiscellaneous%2BLucas%2BSwitches%26pCode%3D31001+lucas+switch+31001&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=2&gl=uk Got several NOS :-D
  23. Hi Ben, I was there with Alan Walker and his Explorer when we dragged the first one back to the Welland Valley site - how many years ago was that? I gather you have Stretties Amazon up there, any progress?? Mike
  24. Hi Energumen The 'dozer looks like a Fowler as you suggested, and the Scammell used a 10.3litre Meadows which had started out as a diesel but was converted to petrol in a Scammell/Meadows collaberation. Following on from the level crossing incident, one of the agency drivers I worked with was with the RE somewhere in Germany and his pal, driving a similar outfit to the one pictured, decided he could beat a train to an unmanned crossing. Unfortunately his speed/distance calculations were somewhat out and the steam loco ploughed into the side of the Scammell, removing the front axle but without de-railng the train.
  25. It's a great idea Jack, but as the article states, the MOD has a duty to obtain the best price for the site which is going to put it out of reach of the enthusiasts. It will be interesting to see how the many grade 2 listed buildings on the site will be maintained, as apparently several are in a bad state of repair. Tony Iveson is a great friend of our family and has campaigned for many years to erect a monument to the 55,000 men of bomber command who perished; it looks like he has finally achieved his goal.
