  1. Yep A41 Larkspur was the main 70s VHF manpack. The A40 was a smaller section/Platoon VHF set as well but the better one with loads of gadgets attached (Morse key, dipole antenna etc) was the A13 -this was replaced by the clansman 320 in the 80s. Gary
  2. Thanks woa2 and TonyB I can get maps printed no problem from electronic or originals. If I can locate some of them in the first place Gary
  3. Thanks, someone mentioned National Archive have some of the same marked up showing patrol routes -but how to get copies of same is the problem Gary
  4. Is there nothing re off road vehicles (or with capability for off road ops) as surely some with side bars would be impeded or become stuck if side and rear under run bars got in way of ground in deep ruts, high angle slopes especially rear fouling and becoming grounded. Unless they were removable of course. Gary
  5. Gary Great photos - have you contacted the RLC Museum as this is something they would be very interested in. Gary
  6. Does anyone know of any sources (repro is fine) for the maps used by the LRDG in Egypt and Cyrenaica. Thanks Gary
  7. The formation sign has the GHQ Middle East Command Camel on it and the yellow/blue? background -being horizontal am not sure with those colours but if they were diagonal then ®ASC logistics etc, which would make sense re jerricans etc. Probably some spurious donkey walloper unit. Gary
  8. Yep the Mans' are coming in to replace the 4,8 and 14 tonne fleet. Ours are due to go in June and our UBRE as well. Not sure about a unit getting all their fleet uplifted, are they a signals unit as some of them are closing down? There was a recent report out about 198 Drill halls being considered for closure, especially if they are within 10 miles of a garrison or military establishment. There are more cuts to come and big ones too! Gary
  9. Ah fond memories causing havoc as part of the Parachute Regiment Group dropping in and scaring the S*** out of the Sceptic tanks and boxheads hehe those NATO exercises in BAOR were great for us when we were given a long lead and thousands of rounds of ammo. Gary
  10. Would they do same for sand paint? And how do you contact them?
  11. Richard Thanks for correction, don't know where I got local repair service from but yes it is the Light Repair Section - I am trying to get anything of the desert operations by them etc. Regards Gary
  12. Clive While we are on a thread re repair depots etc, do you have (or anyone else) anything about Local Repair Service (LRS) workshops of the REME (especially in desert conflict)? Don't want to hijack this thread so maybe posted as a seperate thread might be good. Regards Gary
  13. Imported my Jeep (43 GPW) from California (LA) to Felixstowe at £950 which included all taxes, import duties and Customs duty etc. very happy and speedy service by Kingstown Shipping Hull and their LA Agents, CFR Line Los Angeles The guy who was involved is Alan Shores alan.shores@kingstownshipping.co.uk and he gave quote and arranged all from this side and liaised with LA side. Everything was relatively easy as they handled everything. All I had to do was take the jeep Title and any other relevant paperwork (also pictures of jeep helped too) to DVLA local office with proper registration application form and next day I was registered with new V5 and age related registration etc. I got the owner to scan and send me a copy of the title and other paperwork (the original travels with the vehicle) Hope this helps Gary
  14. Clive sorry not been on for past few days and only caught up with thread. If all else fails I can have a word with the guy who took my one (one of my LCpls who works at Uni IT) and ask him to try and forensically recover your HDD. If you PM me I can send my Address Gary
  15. Clive I had a real bad laptop HDD crash about a year ago and lost the lot- I contacted a friend in a local university who took my drive and got the IT Forensic dept to rebuild and recover 90% of what was previously not recoverable. This is the type of labs who can get data from drive that have been wiped, deliberately damaged, etc for forensic purposes. Never cost me anything but a bottle of wine. Labs are always looking for live cases to practice their skills and software etc on, worth a try Gary
  16. Yep Laurence Corner up behind Euston and the Angel, I was a friend of the Late Mike Ross and remember his brother Badger with his tank at Thruxton (was it a Grant or a Lee, or lt Stuart? can't remember now- wonder what happened to it) - too many years now but in the 70s these were the places to go and buy virtually anything military. I used to go from Glasgow on train to visit these places and get bits n bobs.
  17. We always called them puffing billies, an american design but cannot remember the exact designation. Water heater drip fed petrol fired. Gary
  18. Not seen it myself but that scene looks unrealistic with a Staff Officer in Full Service Dress standing 'in the front line' at the barricades. Would he not be well out of it in his club dressed like that? G
  19. FWIW I do wear period kit of 1942 desert era when with the appropriate LRDG (a unit disbanded at end of WW2) vehicles as part of a display or to enhance the vehicle era/history. I do like to see drivers wearing period kit or variations of instead of the afore mentioned cords/jeans, anoraks etc. I don't like the re-enactor side of things but each to their own I suppose. As a Para of 30 Years (Now logistics last 5 to present) I do take offence at all of those wearing wings that they have not earned, as stated in earlier post re after doing P Company etc. On my period uniform I wear my wings (I am an APJI) and my current rank but suppose as I have came all the way up from Pte I could wear any I had been in past too! I also have many foreign wings including US, French and German and if I was a re-enactor could rightfully wear those wings on a period uniform too. I do not believe in wearing medals at all (period or ones rightfully earned) I know it is important to get all of the detail right when showing a uniform especially for photos, displays etc but owners should point out to joe public that they are portraying a unit, person, type of uniform etc. This is similar to us making sure we get all the proper items and equipment to put onto (or hang off) our vehicles. Just my tuppence worth Gary
  20. There was nothing wrong with good old battledress and greatcoats lol and they faded a bit in the sun, held dust and mud well and lasted a lifetime hehe
  21. Giving away my 54 Austin Champ for free when I lost interest in it in the late 70s. TGA751G wonder what happened to it.
  22. Had 14 original (1960s) action men, with almost every bit of kit, and a Tommy Gunn action figure-IMO he was better detailed and uniformed than his american cousins. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:HPIM1758.JPG http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tommy_Gunn_%28action_figure%29 http://www.doc.mmu.ac.uk/STAFF/D.Higson/classic.htm
