Best safe than sorry, we lost a 1943 chevy 6 cyl head with putting in wrong type. It ate through jacket internally and also copper head gasket. Just bought a load of flush and propylene stuff from AAA -just awaiting delivery gary
  6. Scratch the above -great price but $384 shipping is ridiculous Gary
  7. Hi just been onto Wallace Wade Tires in states and he has boxes of 4 pairs (obviously 2 pairs per jeep) at $66 a pair. Have asked for photos, not interested in what they look like as the vintage sets but that they work and are safe. Anyone fancy a set if I get them sent over? His reply- For 2 pair of chains they are $66.42 per pair. If you can use 4 pairs they would be a little bit less. They come 4 pair to a box. Regards Gary

    antifreeze

It's not the Ethylene Glycol in it's vintage formula that is a problem it is the additives, inhibitors etc now put in that can damage older engines. See the FBHVC website and newsletter No 1 for earlier this year re info. Some people still get confused with so many on go at moment. ANTIFREEZE Technology moves forward and new products are constantly being launched with claims to improved formulations and performance. With the recent bitterly cold weather in January antifreeze has been in the headlines, with some alarming stories which at first seem to be about the well-known tendency of antifreeze to find the tiniest hole and cause leakages – but in these cases it has led to catastrophic engine problems. Traditional blue ethylene glycol is a toxic but highly effective antifreeze and contains silicates as an inhibitor to help prevent corrosion in an engine with mixed metals in its make-up. Bluecol and Blue Star are well known brand names and both of these are declared suitable for ‘classic cars’ on their company websites. Be aware that there are also low- or no-silicate ethylene glycol formulations (usually red) available which may not be suitable for all engines. Propylene glycol is another well-known and less toxic antifreeze formula and usually contains silicates but Comma, the main manufacturer, have now discontinued it in favour of an ethylene glycol product containing ‘bittering agents’ to make it less palatable and minimise the risk of accidental poisoning. Both of the above products use inorganic additive technology (IAT). Recently problems have been reported concerning the use of antifreeze mixtures using organic acid technology (OAT). OAT was introduced in the mid-1990s and the products are biodegradable, recyclable and do not contain either silicates or phosphates and are designed to be longer lasting. However these products do seem to cause problems in older engines; over and above the ability of antifreeze to find the smallest crevice and leak, OAT antifreezes have been accused of destroying seals and gaskets and causing a great deal of damage in ‘old’ engines. For this reason the manufacturers do not recommend their use in historic vehicles. These products are usually coloured red, pink or orange. The final category is HOAT. These products use hybrid organic acid technology in an ethylene glycol base with some silicates in the formulation alongside the organic corrosion inhibitors. The product is usually coloured green and are not recommended for use in historic vehicles. The Federation are still researching this problem but our advice at the moment is: · only use blue coloured IAT antifreeze in historic vehicles; · only use OAT products (‘advanced’ or ‘long life’ antifreeze) if the vehicle used it when new and if specifically directed by the vehicle’s manufacturer; · never mix different types of antifreeze without thoroughly flushing out the system; · always replace the coolant within the time scale specified by the antifreeze manufacturer as the corrosion inhibitors break down over time.

Next ask- anyone got any addresses or websites for sellers of the good old green Propylene Glycol for safe use in my MVs. Already has it in but near the 2 year replacement date. Gary

    antifreeze

Not forgetting some of the modern anti freeze is not suitable for vintage/older cast iron engines etc as it will eat its way through it. Check if it has ethylene glycol or other types to save you a lot of grief Gary
  12. David Is it on next year? Wouldn't mind bringing our vehs down and setting up a dispaly, is there camping etc? Gary
  13. Yep same here for Scotland, something in the middle of the country (UK not just Scotland) would be nice to save an expensive and epic length of drive 'Dawn Sarf' Pity there wasn't the good old British railways car/vehicle transportation of many years ago where you could drive to a central depot (Glasgow etc) roll vehicle onto the flat car (by their staff) and go up the front to the carriages, sans Buffet, sleeper etc and roll off at london, etc. Now there's an idea for mil and classic car clubs to tie up with a railway preservation organisation and provide a service -especially over the high intensity weeks of June/July etc - doing our bit for the environment and arriving refreshed and ready to drink the beer tent dry of an evening or six. Some railway buffs run historic trips in steam, diesel etc around the country why not troop trains and frieght cars full of MVs, classics etc (trains, trucks n troops lol)? Fond memories of troop trains crammed full of squaddies (and this was in the 70s as a lowly Lcpl) and being shunted into every siding between Glasgow and Salisbury plain but with a cargo of Double Diamond and some musical mates what a party over the 4 days getting there. You heard it here first, anyone know the chairman of a railway society? Cheers (hic) Gary
  14. Excellent stuff and great looking carrier Gary
  15. Ahh fond memories, 122 (Glasgow) Sqn ATC 1971-74 before becoming a Para. everything 83KB62 says about uniform reminds me of pressing BD to a razor crease, bulling ammo boots, wearing greatcoat and also the yellow lanyard as a staff cadet. great days, great times and brilliant summer camps. character building sadly missing in many organisations today, thanks to litigation fear and risk assessment overkill lol. gary
  16. I hope they catch the B@$£@&d and string him up. He needs to be made an example of....hope someone gets to him before the police and cuts off his Gnads Resumes silence Gary
  17. What about these buildings for keeping in the military theme - I was pricing them for my own project and they were a pretty cheap option from about 3K and you extend length at multiple of a section -send for their PDF price list they are pretty good. Even come in green etc http://www.gtevans.co.uk/nissen.htm
  18. There is another option that doesn't involve too much, put some cyanide in her Aquaban or favourite tipple. Might involve a short holiday at Her Majesty's pleasure but you will get 3 square a day, free TV, phonecalls and other services and your laundry will still be done for you etc.
  19. Thanks So far guys, sadly we live in the world of litigation a Risk Assessments (following our colonial cousins lol), can't even blow your nose without permission in some places. looking forward to hearing of your successes etc Gary
  20. Dear all, I know over the past few days many of us in the MV hobby or as part of a military unit have been out and about doing their bit trying to raise funds selling poppies. Last weekend a small group of us took the jeep to our local ASDA and over 2 days sold 20 boxes of poppies and raised £2,756.77p for the appeal. It would be nice to see any piccys of our members in the pride and joys out doing similar and posting on here. Regards Gary
  21. Some units still got the Mk2s on issue - TA RLC for one as we have a few in our store at moment, still with the older tan straps and some with the 44 pattern straps although all in 44 pattern bino pouches and some ww2 dated and some early 50s Gary
