  1. This may be a stupid question, but what was the purpose of having the max speed so prominently written on that car?
  2. Interesting document that, covers the causes of my wheel loss, paint on new wheel mating surfaces and failure to re-tighten, after 25-50 miles, I was having too much fun up to that point and hadn't got to 50 miles!
  3. Well used to working on roofs but Jeeezz!! I was hoping to see Fred Dibner sat puffing a fag at the top though...
  4. To strengthen older diffs for more power off roaders of old used to put "buttons" threaded through the housing to the back of the crown-wheel from moving away from the pinion under extreme stress, not at all expensive to do just a bit of know how needed.
  5. Did anyone spot the film cut as he lands off the jump at .55, looks like he's going a over t..the tracks are lifting at the rear.
  6. Plenty of people have done similar things, but a few point need watching. The hardest thing about this job would maintaining the original hole PCD, unless a very good jig was made, modern 100mm PCD wheels are sometimes put on old 4" hubs, and the studs have been known to fail due to the 1.6mm miss-match, which the fitter probably hadn't noticed at all. I once had an early Weller steel wheel come off when driving down the road, (fast, V8 LR) I had forgotten to re-tighten them after a few miles, this was necessary because those wheels where not pressed, just flat steel centers with counter sunk holes. OEM pressed wheels have the holes raised and then the counter sink is formed at the same time, the counter sink does not contact the hub behind, there is a small gap, this acts as a spring washer and should eliminate the need for re-tightening. Care must be taken to maintain this feature EDIT just noticed Stormin already covered the jig thing
  7. very interesting films, thanks, not too sure how the asphalt worked though..
  8. I found that some times the previous marks may not line up if the nut has been loose for some time as some wear may have taken place, so probably best to ignore them and re-mark with paint, this way you will not end up with loads of chiseled marks. If like me you find you can re-tighten after a few runs, then permanently mark when/if nothing has moved.
  9. There ya go, post #188 this page: http://hmvf.co.uk/forumvb/showthread.php?7123-Scammell-Explorer-fixes-and-workarounds/page19
  10. You slacken off the ring of square bolts, use a slogging spanner and belt it with a sledge hammer till it rings, the tighten the square bolt to take up the slack plus a little nip. re wire and that's it, simples. There's a few pix on here somewhere I'll try and find some.
  11. Just put some wide washers behind the nuts, they'll press to shape, works a treat.
  12. Just a thought, but presuming the metal spraying/welding/machining works OK, isn't the next thing to worry about the coefficient of friction of the new surface compared to the parent cast iron, and then matching the pad friction material to that? As the surface wears down near the parent metal, through the join area and so on the braking performance would surely change..
  13. I agree, not easy to do, good job ... Is it me or is that air cleaner assembly over engineered?
  14. Just like Q***kfit, the exhaust was hanging off when they started and was when they finished
  15. Have to confess at having a little chuckle when I read how it was to be worn, that would have made a good caption competition picture..
  16. Great thread, thanks for your time posting those Tony.
  17. Another one suffering from the broken gear change gate support syndrome....but not too bad really. I suppose he means that the engine is so smooth it will run with 4 injectors disabled?
  18. Found in a skip.. http://www.carnetdevol.org/gibson/manuel-anglais.html
  19. What material are these gaskets usually made from? Mine was fibrous asbestos, which got torn, I have replaced it one I made of a similar thickness ht non asbestos gasket material, will it last?
  20. Well, after a few times visiting here on my new birthday iPhone, I found it very fiddly, just too many links per page, kept clicking links instead of scrolling etc. Fingers too fat! Tried the free one then bought the full version, so much easier to use although it obviously doesn't have the right look. So thumbs up from me Joris.
  21. :rotfl::rofl: .............Cas says 'Poor dog, looks worn out '
