  1. Do not do what one of our cooks did on excercise in Cyprus. Do not under any circumstances try and refuel it without releasing the pressure first. He had about 75% burns fortunately we were on Akamas beach and threw him straight into the sea. Casevac out by chopper. When he eventually returned to the unit the Chief Cook made him the outdoor cookery instructor.
  2. The load on the first trailer looks like a section of HGOB Heavy Girder Overbridge. Sometimes used for uprating the load capacity of underbridges.
  3. What are these? Are they even Military? Approx 3ft x 2ft Legs fold down as in first photo giving ground clearance of a few inches. Similar construction to the large frame above but approx 18 inch by 12 Legs fold down as previous. Upper frame folds up but does not lock into position, some sliding collars would cure that though, on the folding straps. Any ideas anyone?
  4. From an operators point of view my biggest complaint was the changeover switch from Creep Drive to Normal by the Air changeover switch. Could often take 10 - 20 attempts all the while getting abuse from some irate infantry man. Close behind that in popularity came changing the digging teeth.
  5. Thanks for the replies. The crane at M Shed is not the same as only 4 wheel rather than 8 on 2 bogies and the lift is only 5t rather than 15t. Found a few more locations where similar cranes are listed. However none look as if they are being worked on currently, which does not mean that they are not in use. There about another 4 of a similar size and capacity to ours.
  6. Our group has a 15 ton Coles Rail Crane. Very similar to Military road mobile versions. Currently undergoing a bit of a restoration to use. One problem we have is getting access into the turntable area to clean out rubbish and bits of trees. The only access holes I can see are in the engine bed deck plate. Does anyone know if there is an access hatch anywhere? Or do we need to lift the crane top off the ring to get access? Photo 1 shows the jib end layout and turntable ring. There are no obvious access holes from the underside. Photo 2 Operators cab and again no obvious means of access. Electrical contactors behind the side panels. Photo 3 Shows a slewing motor on the engine deck plate to the left of this can be seen a small access hole, there are a few of these around the engine deck and all very small and buried under or behind motors, compressors or rope drums. We need to get into that foot high area below the horn. If possible without having to strip the thing down. Any ideas please?
  7. Definate yes. But fitted with a cab. I used to operate one for a year or two around 1980 - 1 Very thirsty for petrol when operating about 15 gallon an hour at working revs and a large flame out of the exhaust. Just what you want when trying to dig a hole at night in the open.
  8. Looks a bit dodgy the lifting arrangement on the Half track. Surely some damage is likely.
  9. If you have a sales stall then possibly a policy from the "Market Traders Federation" might suffice. I use this sort of policy for a stall I have for Plant Fairs (Green things with roots not Green things with wheels)
  10. And a trailer in the background as well.
  11. Like to know what it is first. Cannot see anything?
  12. Wouldn't the generator be mounted on a separate trailer? The old Machinery wagon that we used to have in our RE Squadron used to have a big towed generator set.
  13. Never got to play with them. Remember them being at RSME Chattenden and I did have to recover one by dragging it with a D6C after it fell off the side of a bund on the Ponderosa field in 1978. Did not see any at Perham Down Tidworth or at Iserlohn when I was there. I think I heard that they went up to Waterbeach or another Anglian airfield in the 1980s for a year or so, as they had a project to excavate a lake.
  14. Is that an Allis Chalmers MWT on the back of the trailer?
  15. Between 77 and 82 the REME element in our RE Squadron had the predictable Blue Bell stencilled on their Land Rovers.
  16. Found this on the BBC today Mon 9th To include a 50k road run across the plain. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-wiltshire-31795061
  17. This event was planned to take place in may this year but I have just read an article in the latest Heritage Railway mag that says it may be relocated to the Nene Valley Railway near Peterborough. This is due to the redevelopment of Long Marston into a building site. No mention yet on the website. Celebrating 100 years of the Royal Engineers, Railway Operating Division at the Long Marston Military Railway (LMMR). This event will display the skills and equipment from this unique army division which helped the allies win two world wars and save countless lives. Railway equipment incuding locomotives will be demonstrated. Not to be missed, is the opportunity to see LMMR's impressive, USA supplied, S160 second world war utility steam locomotive More than 600 of this type were supplied to the UK on lease/lend to boost allied logistics. Only a handful now survive worldwide. http://www.trainofevents.co.uk/pages/military-railfest-2015.html
  18. It may be from an OS Trig Point.
  19. Hope that there is enough time for the concrete to cure.
  20. OK Who forgot that they bought a tank? http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-latin-america-31015477
  21. Any details on the AP Carrier featured in the Mail article?
  22. Or rather HEARD TODAY. Chris Evans Radio 2 at 07.11 tuesday. Who had a message repeated today after they missed the first one due to being outside firing up his WW2 tank? Anyone going to own up?
  23. Used to have that sort of connector for lighting set ups in tents etc. Should also be some 3 pin (Square type) 4 way connectors and end to end in line connectors. Bulbs fitted by screw in pin points that pierced the insulation to contact the wire inside. I would hate to think how many holes there would be in the insulation in the main cable runs. All at 240 volt very nice on a wet day outside on Salisbury plain.
