  1. Wed 3rd Feb 09.45 4 Empty Tank transporters heading South on the A1 just South of the M62 at Ferrybridge.
  2. Just across the fields from my old unit at Perham Down. During the 70s it seemed to be full of Snow Cats as that was what we used to see most of.
  3. Thanks for the offer but we do have the manual for our crane. Just the Wylie section is a bit sparse. It is an Atlantis 15t capacity with 2 Four wheeled bogie carriage. We have just recently removed the jib and sent it away for specialist weld repairs. The main engine on it seems to be a Fordson as well. However in our case this also provides the power for all movements of the crane including travel.
  4. So after a quick wash down and polish, when are you booking it in for its MOT? Fantastic find and best of luck.
  5. Do you have any detail of the Wylie system? We have what we presume is a Wylie SLI fitted on our 15t Coles Rail Crane.
  6. After a long period under overhaul and just a quid or two spent on it the Flying Scotsman has returned to steam. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-35259914
  7. That was Pete Wines from near Salisbury. Very much into Heavy Metal and I don't mean big diggers. Not seen him since he left 52 possibly for Berlin.
  8. The Terex 72 / 51 might have been rubbish but At least the 72 / 71 that we had as a replacement for the Michigan 275 was a right beast. That could shift some muck and not too shabby on speed. I remember using one at Leeming and fully loaded a Hauly in one bucket with clay. Back end was floating around just a little bit. I have previously posted some of these but What the hell here they are again. 52 Sqn plant yard 1978. Michy , Allis and O+K amongst others Compactor rig, great at flattening cars with the 5 ton drop weight otherwise slow and cumbersome. Volvo 4400 at RAF Linton On Ouse open Day Terex 72 / 71 at Leeming Aveling Barford Super MGH 113 Grader, Excellent machine. Michigan 275 at Bruggen Size comparison between the Terex and the Volvo at Leeming.
  9. When I was at 22 Engr in 52 between 78 - 82 We had Allis's as our main bucket loader for Airfield Damage repair. In that role they excelled doing everything wanted, but they were dated. They tried to replace them with Terex Medium Wheelies but they were hopeless. The Allis could dig down well below its wheels where the Terex might manage an inch or so. The 4 in 1 Bucket was better. Agility and speed in the Terex was also lacking. When I returned to ADR in the TA at RAF Leeming and Waterbeach we were equipped with the VOLVO 4400 and I for one found it to be equal to or maybe better than the old Allis. The punishment that ADR inflicts on plant, especially the Bucket loaders, is severe, and the Volvo would take it in its stride. The TEREX would have no chance. In 52 we had a fleet of Barfords split between home at Perham and on RAF Bruggen in store. The drawback with them was a lack of speed otherwise they took a lot of abuse with ease. I remember seeing one loaded Barford with Greedy Boards rolling over when it was turning when a drain collapsed under its wheels on one side. It left a large imprint in the ground, The nearby Michigan 275 operator put his bucket under the skip and righted the Barford which then proceeded on its way after a quick check over. In the TA we had Hauly's and I had no complaints about those other than the lack of a second seat which meant a lie down on the internal bonnet cover for the unauthorised passenger. The photo on p11 of the attached shows a typical allocation of plant and vehicles for ADR in the 70s - 80s http://fauntrackway.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/RRR_guide_to_airfield_damage_repair.pdf
  10. On the BBC Cornwall webpage. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-cornwall-35091164 Bit of a find there. Any possibility that any of them have a military connection with the mention of a Mr Lawrence?
  11. Another answer is a Prat of an operator.
  12. Any reason why the pictures are not expanding when I double click them?
  13. This article was on the BBC Website yesterday http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-33766644
  14. Looks a bit like the Tilt Trailers we used to use behind Aveling Barford Tippers. Often had Muirhill A5000's or 100B Crawler loaders on board.
  15. I think I am correct in spotting that the Lowloader is on the Training field at Chattenden.
  16. As a matter of interest does anyone have a photo of one and rough sizes?
  17. I Remember that van. Was talking with him and he said that Tonight you will be here but will move out about 03.00 and then move to there setting up about 09.00 then the next day another move. I asked how did he know? As we had no clue when or where we were going. He said "They always do this, besides they let me know so I can find you." In the photo Is he getting a tow? Looks like something on the front tow point.
  18. Just going through a bit of Youtube clips and found these.
  19. I think that what they are doing is flattening the last remnants of the windrows produced by the graders. May have been quicker to do this than take the graders off another task.
  20. Found this elsewhere, have not seen it before. A number of vehicles not normally seen on camera.
  21. That is Class 60 matting made up into an Airfield Repair Patch mat. At least between 1977 - 96 as I knew it. The full size mat is approx twice the length and would have more coils in the roll. The FAUN Trackway link does give a very good description of the process but there are some detail changes from what I knew. I was involved in both Regular Army and TA Royal Engineer ADR Teams from Sapper to Plant Sergeant.
