  1. On the first page of the print out / screen shot. Why is there such a large difference between the Disposal date and the Cast date? In this case nearly 4 years, was it storage?
  2. Like the to do list on the door. Especially agree with the last item.
  3. There have been times whilst using a Dozer that I felt 6mph was too fast.

  5. How about trying again with a Chieftain Bridgelayer?
  6. As an add on to the Hand Signals. When were hand signals withdrawn from the normal road test? I have forgotten when. Especially niggling because I took my test on the last day of using hand signals.
  7. Apologies if any offence. I used to operate these beasts for about a year near Tidworth. Temperamental - Yes. Especially when changing from Air drive to normal. Could take longer to disengage than it took to dig the hole. Thirsty - Very 15 gallon an hour of petrol at working revs. Uncomfortable - Yes especially if there were 2 of you and no other vehicle. Any hates about the machine? - Yes Changing the digging head teeth. Try and Cam one up - Very difficult with the net catching everywhere and then the net starts melting around the exhaust. Can you hide it at night? - Not if its working with a 10ft flame out of the exhaust. Why do I like them? - I'm weird I was a Plant op. It is a thing that people look twice at and say what the hell is that thing? What will it dig through - On the training area on the course we thought progress was a bit slower than it should have been. Checked the hole and we were halfway through a cased pipe about 2ft thick in concrete and with a steel pipe liner. Salisbury Plain chalk caused no problems getting into position did though at times. Would I have one - YES if someone else forked out for the fuel bill.
  8. 2 items from the BBC WW1 in partnership with the Imperial War Museum Railway Station, York: from a Maid to a Railway Worker http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p0230lz3 Pickering Railway Station, North Yorkshire: Removing Tracks http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p01x8k20
  9. http://www.militaryvehicle-photos.net/picture/show/7580/Light-Mobile-Digger As you say It does not exist.
  10. Does anyone know how many LMD Light Mobile Diggers are around? 4x4 Thorneycroft Nubian chassis with a coal board digging head mounted on the back. I think that there is one in Chatham.
  11. The 750 tins were from Johnstones. Thanks for the replies anyway.
  12. Yes if you are doing it on the open road. Did mine in a Cat D6. In a Royal Engineer Plant Yard. Easiest test ever. Start up after checks. Travel forward 10 yards, Slew right travel 10 yards, Slew Left travel 10 yards and Stop. Reverse back the way you came. Finish. Did a refresh a number of years later in a Sultan On the A1 / A61 / A167 circuit from RAF Leeming.
  13. Has anyone else found any problem in the last few weeks in finding any Red Oxide? We tend to buy ours in 5ltr cans from trade suppliers but in the last few weeks none has been available in a couple of outlets. Had to resort to going to a DIY store and buying 2 x 750ml tins just to get a job finished on friday.
  14. All Thanks for the replies, will try the other nozzles.
  15. The piece that sheared into pieces was a machined piece of tool steel in a roughly top hat shape.
  16. Bought a new Needle Scaler a few months back. Worked ok until about a fortnight back when a number of needles started breaking. About 8 out of 19. Thought time for a change as they were getting worn. Changed all the needles for the new spare set that we bought with the Scaler originally. Worked for about 1 - 2 hours on friday morning and then all stopped. Air flowing ok when using the trigger but no action. Stripped it down and found the piston inside had sheared into 5 - 6 pieces. Any ideas as to why? Have we done something wrong? ERP scaler.
  17. Why won't our grit blast cabinet work? Last year we bought a new Sealey cabinet and after about 6 months got round to assembling it. Followed the idiots guide to the letter and all seemed OK as we progressed. Coupled it up to a suitable compressor and air gets pumped out but no grit. Tried differing levels of grit in the hopper but no luck. Grit is fine grade but I think we need to go coarser for the rust we need to get through. Any ideas?
  18. Reminds me of the Colin Shears collection that used to be at Winkleigh in Devon.
  19. The "Seriously big digger" is a Michigan 275 from the look of it. We had about 6 of them in our Squadron for Airfield repair. An SMG dropped from the cab and run over by one of the tyres comes out looking rather flat. The TA unit I was in later had a bigger better version the TEREX 72-71 I once loaded a class 2 tipper with clay in one bucket.
  20. Wasn't there a TV Army Ad back in the 70s showing a Scorpion going along a road then turning off cross country with a quick glance at the speedo showing a fairly high rate of knots? Fairly sure it was above 60. I know that I used to get a reasonable speed out of my LMD ( Light Mobile Digger) With flame out of the exhaust as the RR Petrol engine was in the higher revs.
  21. Looks very similar to a batch of locos built for the Mersey Docks in 1965. The found loco does not look like something from earlier than 1960. http://bestieboy.smugmug.com/Trains/East-Somerset-Railway/i-zdZHBsH/0/M/D1373-M.jpg

  23. When I was in the TA at RAF Leeming at the station open days. We did this sort of thing but for all the visitors. The visitors could have a look at any of the kit the RAF could put together but it was a case of don't touch this Don't touch that etc. When they came to our stuff, big heavy dirty plants of plant and tippers, the kids started off scared to touch anything until we said you can pull, push bang anything you want to. If we can't break it you won't. The kids loved it. Would I do it again, Yes like a shot. Only trouble is too far from you Rosie.
  24. A free service that can be used is Realtime trains. http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/search/advanced If you can work out the advanced search facility then it does give an indication of what might be running. I say Might be running because especially with freight services although the paths are booked the train may only run as and when required.
