1. I was very disappointed when, around 2004, Duxford unceremoniously disposed of the Federal C-2 wrecker which had pride of place in the American hangar, alongside the B-17 Mary Alice. Not long afterwards it went overseas. To the best of my knowledge the country has been Federal wreckerless ever since. Well that situation has just been rectified. The new arrival weighs in at a healthy 26,000lbs. The new dad is still wondering what on earth came over him. The new mum took the news quite well considering.
2. M5Clive - look around 2min 45 sec, there's Sticky Six doing something useful - acting as an extension tow rope for that lovely Diamond T!
3. N.O.S.

Winch

Grooves in pulleys are same diameter as rope, so unit is designed for this size rope. The reduction box is fitted with an original fitment fan to keep oil cool. All quite normal stuff - looks to be a standard engine-driven winch unit and all original. But for what?
4. If the manual is for a PE-143-E then I'd really like to borrow it to copy, H! I assume yours can be used as a welder set too?
5. Surely ajmac is asking - in not so many words: "Is the UK the leading light or the centre of the restoration of WW2 tanks and armour, given the activities of the above named restorers / collectors to name but a few? Or is there perhaps a bigger scale of restoration going on elsewhere, e.g. in the USA (Jacques Littlefield, etc, etc), or in another country maybe?. In the same way that Korea is now the centre of shipbulding, or Hawes is the centre of Wensleydale cheese production, or my dog is currently the centre of methane production (wonder what on earth he ate today.....)
6. David -that truck originally worked for a living in Suffolk - I recall going to see her in the late 80's when she first found a safe home. No winch at that time and both doors were blue, so she has received a little bit of attention since! If your mate hasn't got any of her history, I can help with some info. Tony
7. Mark - looks like a Fairy High pressure filter. If the element became clogged the pressure sensor on the housing would put the warning light on first, then if it clogged further the oil would eventually bypass the element (assuming it is a bypass type which I think most if not all are). If the oil couldn't bypass the element the pressure would simply destroy the element - it would not stop the oil flow (might slow things down a bit but that's all). Can you crack a pipe union somewhere and test for flow to the filter?
8. Yes, and you can still see the stains on the carpet where Jack spilt Gritineye's pint of SAE 30 - I thought that was going to have serious consequences! Try Robert at Robert Froude Bulk Haulage, Dorchester. Triaxle Stepframe and 6 wheel beavertail. Tell him a dodgy bloke with a Bedford drilling rig gave you the nod :-D
9. No no no Jack, I was just trying to take my mind off the diesel issue and thought I'd see what MV stamps there were around in case the mv hobby had to contract to something more manageable which didn't need fuelling up. They are nice though, aren't they? It's ok, I've just taken some more pills. However, I do happen to have a first issue cover with the Red Ball U-7144T stamp on (well I would, wouldn't I...) :cool2:
10. I guess the cause of the problem is that (and this has to be a sweeping generalisation) we are living beyond our means, i.e. we cannot really afford to have all the things we have, do all the things we do, and do our bit to save the planet at the same time. So the 16p thing is a way of getting more funds in to allow us to carry on - well for a little bit longer anyway Take for example our manufacturing industry, that has cleaned its environmental act up a lot in recent decades. It is gradually disappearing because we can buy products made outside the country much cheaper - because they have not been made with a similar consideration to the environment or well-being of the workforce. So our wealth goes out of the country and the planet is worse off. That makes a whole load of load of sense doesn't it? :nut: I suppose we could be a bit more patriotic and support our own commerce and industry (that would be helping folk who want a job and helping to minimise pollution), perhaps by paying a little more for products, so jobs are created and the money we spend goes back into the community, but that would be so selfish of us, wouldn't it? Or would it? Who has the answer? What was the question? Oh yes, 16p on a litre of what used to be top quality mineral fuel but has now been buggered up by mixing in some biofuel rubbish that bungs up your fuel system, causes food prices to go up and doesn't do a whole lot to make the carbon footprint smaller anyway. Size 8 is a European 42 isn't it? Any one collect stamps? Nurse!
11. And it was the fronts which gave me problems (because the couplings were missing and pipe was sealed by a large steel ball in the union therefore no chance to breathe. Interesting. If I've got this right - there is a simple 3 way shuttle valve (equalising valve??) in the front lines, which - if more pressure in the connecting hose - will move across and allow air from connecting hose to connect with brake lines. Slightly less pressure on the front hose side of the valve compared with the vehicle side and the valve moves the other way and isolates the hose line. If pressure is equal the shuttle valve which is not sprung can work its way across and gradually cause air to bleed through to brake lines. Or something like that....or maybe not ...:nut:
12. Is this something to do with the blanking cover? Shouldn't there be a very small bleed hole in the coupling blanking cover to ensure the pressure at the coupling end is always slightly less than the last valve upstream (usually an equalising valve?) - which should always think there is less pressure on the external (hose) side or it will allow air to bleed through to brake lines?? e.g. as on Scammell Constructor? We sort of got very near to nailing this eternal problem a while back - but not quite!!
13. Sorry guys, but can one of you please advise the differences between old and new? This is a problem I will face soon. I take it the main problem is you cannot mix new and old coupling halves? I assume there would be no problem changing both truck and hose ends to the new type? Thanks.
14. I've got a really good modelling article showing how to replicate surface rust - highly realistic it is, if that is any help. :coffee:
15. Now on Google Chrome and as quick as my brain can cope with!!
16. No, I meant a banner stating that certain security programs were causing delays in running the website, gives you the option to disbale those which cause the biggest delays. And yes, I'm using IE -

[h=1]"Internet Explorer has closed this webpage to help protect your computer[/h]

[h=3]A malfunctioning or malicious add-on has caused Internet Explorer to close this webpage."[/h]

17. Still a problem it seems. Using the free Microsoft Security package (which seems to be very effective at keeping the computer flu at bay) - last three days at least the site frequently closes down as soon as I try to navigate away from opening page, message saying 'malicious somethingorother' caused Windows to close webpage and re-open, which often it doesn't until you go away and come back again  Is this linked to the message problem? Is it a gremlin somewhere that is causing HMVF to be blocked by the MSN/Hotmail systems? Getting to be a right pain. How many others are experiencing this and simply don't bother to keep trying I wonder.
18. Thirded!! She's looking pretty good I'd say - Arthur has no need for a cheque book if that is the standard he's managing to achieve without one. Well done to him. Tony
19. Thanks Lee - and there has been ad ad blocker banner started appearing at the bottom of the screen this last day or two. Will try that.
20. Reporting a problem - maybe affecting those using Microsoft Security - which is getting very irritating, something causing sporadic delays in loading pages and links, including Smilies. Started a couple of days ago. :computerrage: although working ok now when site just vacated and revisited.
21. Welcome Andy. You could always try combining the two interests - for example I have a spare complete GMC rear body and I am thinking of welding the tailgate up, clamping on an Evirude Fisherman and making the ultimate shallow-draft broads piking boat. :captain::saluting:
22. :nono: Now, now, you've got more important things to sort out before worrying about the lub filter lipstick :-D
