  1. Unless someone put the coil on the wrong way round :cool2:
  2. You're lucky you've got any mudguards to put a jerry can on!!! Thurleigh airfield:
  3. ...which could be in black? :-) Here's a 388th BG Chev which escaped the white bumperette treatment - but look at the huge star on the mudguard! Like I said, anything goes
  4. No idea where you are, but find a local truck and trailer parts factor - they will usually collect springs from their customers and get them to their local reconditioner. The local guys to me (East Anglia) send them into the west Midlands. Takes about 4 days. Only proper way is to re-temper all leaves, so they strip out replace any broken / cracked ones and re-temper and build up.

    V2 found

I'm busy taping up all my southeast-facing windows......
  6. Yes I have, Pete. Very good value and prompt delivery. They have their own weaving machine so can also do specials. Only slight downside I've found is with multi-core wire. There is a maximum diameter which they can braid, which means that some bigger multi-core wire has to be the modern thin wall insulation type - which I do not like.
  7. Oh for crying out loud, I was hoping not to have to build up any more of those 14.00x20s on split rims :banghead:
  8. When we picked up the 10T stake trailer from Alan Chapman's yard, we had difficulty turning with a 6x2 unit with the 5th wheel right back on slider. Much fun getting it out of its shed!!
  9. How does the distance from the 5th wheel coupling centre line to the rear of chassis compare with modern units, Howard?
  10. Just caught the last 20 minutes of this film - great stuff as always. Two ambulances were used - a 4 x 2 and a 4 x 4. The front driven axle and propshaft from the transfer box (which featured heavily) seem to appear and disappear almost constantly during the journey! Was there ever such a beast as the 4 x 4 K2, or was it just a special for the film?
  11. And here's on efrom the UK who make their own: http://www.autoelectricsupplies.co.uk/product_list/12 Not much nearer!!
  12. That look quite respectable. Dropping rears by 5psi or would give slightly greater contact but it won't make a vast difference to the wear pattern - to achieve full contact you'd be looking at 25psi or less and that ain't a good idea as we seem to be agreed. These bar tread tyres are funny - especially the bigger sizes. They rapidly wear down to around 50%, during which time you have fits about the cost of replacing them, but after that (when there is more contact on the road) the wear stabilises and they take forever to wear out the last 50%! Matadors are a classic example. Let them bed in a bit before pannicking, but if you go on what others are doing with pressures you won't go far wrong.
  13. Have a look at Vulture's Obsession thread - 2min 30 + into the Ulbeck video....
  14. JACK! JORIS! Mobilise the HMVF Containment Unit to Huntingdon quickly! There's been an outbreak of old truck collectormania. The usual 10 mile exclusion zone should suffice. You can bring Vulture's grey GMC over to my yard for decontamination and storage until he's been given clearance :cool2:
  15. Vulture, Have you decided to - 1) go for original screws (which we have been advised are UNF) and then try to find some bows which will accept them (unless yours are UNF of course), or 2) stick with the bows you have and find screws to suit, or 3) just say 'f%$k it' and use Barry's excellent bodge of tapping them metric? (mind the threaded bushes don't turn in the metal pressings though....)
  16. Remember the hair cut and beard off for A&E Hoppy Birdy.
  17. First off, looks like all the bows I've ever come across (two trucks with old bows - but who knows if they are wartime.... - and two sets of new ones from different sources) may have the wrong thread in the bushes. 24 TPI would be 5/16 UNF. The ones I've suggested, and used, are indeed 18 TPI (UNC). They are indeed socket head (domed). Hence my note underneath -"At the time I couldn't find any of the flatter head ones like Deadline has shown(more like the originals), you may be luckier". I thought they were a pretty good compromise, plus the stainless steel won't rust-stain the canvas (I couldn't be bothered to paint them  ). Vulture - sorry but I don't feel I'm qualified to offer any further help on this matter as I do have a reputation for being a bit of a bodger - looks like I've been rumbled. :-D Happy Days :-)
  18. The tyres would take it, but at slow speeds. ISTR trailer capacity was 45 Tons at 12mph or 60 Tons at 6mph!!
  19. 1 1/4 here: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Stainless-UNC-Button-Head-Bolts-5-16-x-1-1-4-4-Pack-/260462049779?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts&hash=item3ca4bf79f3#ht_2264wt_1159 At the time I couldn't find any of the flatter head ones like Deadline has shown (more like the originals), you may be luckier.
  20. Degsy - I had that jimmy shimmy once, quite frightening. ISTR when I checked the front pressures right after the incident one was down to 30/35psi.
  21. I know what you mean, Paul I was coping OK with this thread, even getting inspired by it, until I saw the last set of photos - then I felt a little bit like this: Never mind, we'll get there eventually!!!!
  22. It was indeed Tom, and it looks as if the towing jaw has been fitted since then as it has red oxide around it. He says there wasn't a winch on it either and both doors were blue/white with 24Hr Recovery - so it has had some work done to it since. Does it look the same one to you?
