  4. Yes, Shrapnel is specific projectiles, any odd shape bits are fragments. As an aside, German Great War Shrapnel is very year, it was steel and rusted.
  5. It is usual to run a magnet over the remains to remove any metal. Me inclined to think someone got sloppy.
  6. They will tow the max 35,00 Kgs, on an overun braked trailer. Any more than that needs powered brakes on the trailer.

  11. I'd have thought the only way a QL would do 50mph, is dropping of a cliff! Wouldn't fancy trying to stop it at that speed. Some were converted post war for various office vehicles the last time I know of one in service was about 1970 doing a recruitment tour. That vehicle started life as a QLR, kitted as a Y Service interceptor, then was converted to Office Body in 1950's (Will check exact date tommorow) and went back as a Pay Corp vehicle. Might like this. Actually, you can check the date yourself can't you?:red:
  12. Woah! Peace on this place guys! Like hearding cats, the rule is be carful, keep checking amd try to avoid the scratches. So if it's just tight and don't leack that's a good start? A regular bit of servicing used to be De - Coking, how often do you need to do that now? We think a head gasket should last for a 100,000 miles, the old guys thought in terms in 20,ooo or less.

  15. Wonder if we could get a HMVF group discount on the ferries? Make a change from Normandy and Bethune, been there done that getting bored. About 100 miles from Vlissegen to Eindhoven, ferries run from Dartford to Vlissegen.
  16. By the time you feel pins and neddles the vibration exposure is to long. I'm now old enough that exposure to chain sawa and such like is having an effect, arthritis starting.
  17. I just cut the end of each case, and individually fitted to the chambers which varied due to the maching. Drawback is: It's a bu**er if you open a bit quick and they eject.
  18. I do agree Griif, a lost dark art. I was taught use two fingers at the end of the spanner and take up intial torque, that was reckoned about ten pounds. Then guess in the rest. So basically tighten till it stops leacking? And like you Ron I was told when it holds it's tight enough, you may have to undo it. Now you have Dammed angles to cope with!
  19. Dear insurance, Relevant to my recent claim for a U Boat, I was not drunk at the time.... I'd love to belive this is true, but a lot of such stories were officially issued as 'gossip and rumour' during both wars to raise morale and as a cover for new devices. The classic one is the Second World War story of eating carrots to improve night vision. This stated as a cover for AI Radar.

  21. Richard that seems to be the problem. Not being difficult but what was the practice at the time? We are starting a rebuild on a 1939 Wolsley engine, and coming across same sort of headaches.
