  1. Hi Rich, welcome aboard. Well interesting project, looking forward to more pictures
  2. "Over the top of him!!" yep been there, done that!! Osnabruck 1988/9 Active Edge Call out one morning. Regimental convoy on the way to Achmer Training Area, all lights on etc. German clown in Mercedes is overtaking convoy, but has to cut in in front of me when another car comes the other way. I am driving a fully loaded Militant with trailer. No chance of stopping in time, went straight up the boot and onto the roof. German driver well shaken, but ok, his nice Mercedes was a right off. Scratched the paint on the Militants bumper, much laughter all round
  3. Lovely set of pictures of a really nice restoration. Like the HIAB, might have to measure up the Militant for one, I was after ideas of what to put on the back
  4. Next question will be, "Any chance of fixing it ready for the school run this afternoon?"
  5. Welcome aboard Dave, I used to be very familiar with Warcop, Catterick and the like, I had a posting to Ripon back in the late seventies and spent many days in these places, some good and some just miserable, wet and windy
  6. Do you know if the same applies to Militants as well? My Mk1 has a badge, but it is held on with self tapping screws and if you look closely it's not quite straight
  7. In defence of the VOSA types, I would say they are not all bad. I've met quite a few of them through work over the years, most of them are just decent blokes doing their days work.
  8. I would suggest, Mike, you just got a bad deal from Mitcham. VOSA just didn't want to test the Ward and were trying to baffle you with b*llsh*t. Julezee has an MOT on his Militant, and I dont see any under run bars, spray supression etc on that. The only difference, I believe, is he want to Hastings GVTS and you to Mitcham. For my Militant when it is ready, I will drive past my nearest centre and on to the centre where I know I will get a better deal. No less of a test, mind you, just a better reception
  9. Wecome aboard, love to see a few pics
  10. Quite surprised to read that, I would have thought they would have been a bit more helpful. But that said there are 2 test stations near me, and they are as different as chalk and cheese. One being a miserable bunch which even the trade tries to avoid, and the other couldn't be better, even when they have to fail you they do it nicely!
  11. Hi Brett, welcome aboard. Wouldn't say no to a few pictures of the Mat
  12. The Vehicle Examiner can only test the items he/she can see. Cant see it, Cant fail it!!:D Might get done for the sharp edge though.
  13. Most vehicles have a maximum towing weight worked out by the clever types who designed it in the first place. Your car will have it listed in the technical section of the handbook, or you can find out from the main dealer. Same goes for a truck, it is usually stamped on the data plate, along with its axle weights etc.
  14. Any Goods Vehicle Testing Station will carry out a voluntary check of your pre 1960's truck, for your own peace of mind on any work you may have done. They will charge you for it according to what you ask them to check. For example you could have just a brake test, which will get you a computor print out showing how well, or not, your brakes performed (at the time of test). On the other hand you could opt for a full inspection which will be done to the same standard as for an MOT. However, for a pre 1960 vehicle they would not normally issue an MOT because your old truck is unlikely to conform to the current regulations. Hazard lights for one, were not required back then, but now they are, so unless you have retro fitted them recently you wont get an MOT. No MOT means no plate, so no using it for anything other than social, domestic or pleasure.
  15. None of us are ever going to prosper, we keep spending it all on big trucks:D Welcome aboard , mate.
  16. :-DWelcome aboard, Tony. Unfortunately you can't get pills for this affliction, but you can find lots of fellow sufferers to talk to on here :-D
  17. Would depend on what they are made of. All the plates on my Militant are brass, so a quick soak in nitromors then several hours of Brasso, (well 5 minuites on the polishing wheel, actually) bought them up a treat
  18. Big, heavy, old english trucks. Scammell, Commer, AEC.etc. But especially the Mk1 Militant, it is such a beast to drive. no power steering, crash box, but there is some thing just right about it.
  19. Now that's what you call a damn good fart
  20. 'Ere Sarge, I thought REME said they'd fixed the brakes
  21. Welcome aboard Hedd, a few pictures of your stuff will still raise interest on here, even if it isn't exactly military
  22. Stupid question time, but could someone tell me what the Faversham show is that has been mentioned in this thread?
