  1. I think the show organisers have a responsibility to ensure that everybody showing a vehicle (of whatever type) at their show is taxed and insured, especially if they are charging the show entrants for the privilage of showing their vehicle. As for bubbling someone, your're damned right I would. I pay a fortune for all my vehicles to be insured, most of the premium is paid into the fund that covers the costs of those who don't insure theirs. Driving without insurance, tax etc is fraud and should be treated as such. If the local Plod can spare an officer to check these things best of luck to them, hope they get a result.
  2. Welcome aboard Dan, Photos are always welcome love to see some of your antique
  3. I'm sure I've got some photos of plant from my POM courses, I'll see if I can find them.
  4. Can't say I've been there recently, either. Capt Smith was O.C. Fields during my time there (1990/4) along with Dave Clement as his WO1. Is the D6 still there? I'd heard it had all been closed down. Plant training being done at Brompton and Bassingbourne these days, now that they have JCB's and it is an all arms thing. Like everything else, I guess todays POMs are not the same quality as they used to be.
  5. I dont know about most common cause of breakdown, but certain things seem to be guaranteed. 1. you will be miles from anywhere. 2. It will be cold/wet/dark etc. 3. you wont be able to get a signal on your mobile to phone the recovery. 4. you will be blocking the road. 5. no one will offer to help you, they will only shout abuse as they squeeze past.
  6. Winch pulleys and tow hook are safely stored the the shed, waiting to be refitted
  7. In your Milly, Simon, they would have sat in the drivers door bin. As I remember they were just too long enough to fit properly and had to be stood on end, which made them a pain in butt when winding the window down
  8. Has to be said, when you are cold, wet, thoroughly p****d off with the whole game, and endex is not in sight a decent brew does improve things. Even if you've only got biscuits AB to dunk in it
  9. I got on all right with the old rat packs, even the biscuits AB were OK. I always carried a personal supply of salt, pepper, curry and chili powder which helped. The only thing I couldn't eat was chicken supreem, but I dont eat chicken anyway. The boiled sweets were the best bit, especially the white ones, would have sold my soul for a bag of them, could eat them forever
  10. Do like a good before and after picture. Todays efforts, and the addition of recently acquired rear corner brackets This is the before taken in February this year and this is the after. Been told I paint in the 'Enry Cooper "splash it all over" style It did start raining halfway through painting, hence the blobs all over it.
  11. Perhaps you should start a new thread, "Decent bits of Army clothing"
  12. The FBHVC survey should produce a reasonably accurate result when it is completed
  13. You and me both, an' it's raining outside
  14. Speaking of terminology, I take it by Woodfield Way, you mean outside the Ponderosa. Captain Alf Smiths offices?
  15. Told you it was worth a visit. I've been several times and keep seeing things I had missed before. I think the Matador, champ and Morris's belong to the Dockyard rather than the RE museum. The crane, LMD, Muir Hill etc are definitely RE kit as an extension to the rest of the museum. I think the Ropery is the most fasinating, would love to have the back off that winding machine to find out how it works
  16. Wonder how much taxpayers money they spent to find that out?? Incidently, I dont recall ever seeing my parents drunk. Mother would have a small sherry and me Dad would have half a light ale if they were "having a drink". So the only answer was to find out for yourself. Fortunately the local off licence wasn't too good at age limits :D
  17. So long as it has one of these on the front you can't go too far wrong Quality engineering standards maintained to the last, despite the best efforts of Leyland management. There is quite a few of them still to be found, and even the ergo cabs are still better looking than many others. Rusty ones can be repaired, and most routine parts are still readily available,
  18. Welcome aboard Paul. Can't wait to see some of the pictures, sounds interesting already
  19. Have you tried the RE museum at Chatham? There is also the Dockyard next door, if you are looking for something Military. You could try the Museum of Kent Life or the Carriage Museum at Maidstone, or Leeds Castle if you want something historic.
  20. RECYCLING Doing ones bit to save the trees etc while working on the rear lights for Militant. 1. Take a used 45 gallon oil drum 2. Annoy the neighbours with lots of cutting, grinding and hammering 3. Have a couple of practice runs to get the design right 4. Last bit of cutting and sticking 5. Coating of zinc oxide 6. One rear light unit 7. Weld into back of truck Might not be original fitment, but it will do the job and no trees were hurt during the making. All I've got to do now is make a matching one to fit the off side
  21. Hi Phil, I watched you leaving for the road run, and we passed on the road, I was in my car and you were going back to the showground. Good show, nice selection of trucks. I trust they got the Mili gears fixed alright? All the steering was intact on the militant when I last saw it, I can make enquiries this weekend if you like, or I can PM you the guys mobile and you can speak direct for price etc. I would be happy to remove it and could store it or post it to you
  22. It's not a problem, mate. the guy in question was advertising the Mili on Ebay as breaking for spares. I went over there last week and got a shed load of bits for mine, at a more than reasonable price. I was due to go back this weekend to get some more, including a wheel and tyre. Anyhow he phoned me yesterday saying he had sold all the wheels and tyres to someone who wanted them for a Matador, but he had another wheel from a Stolly which would fit my Mili, and I could have that. Hence the thread "will it fit" I will be going back tomorrow "wheel or no wheel" for some more stuff, is there anything you need?
  23. Hate to say this, but it seems to be the way these days. Can't say this, can't do that. I wonder what else will get changed, or "enhanced" for the audience benefit. Must say I am disappointed at Stephen Fry (the Writer), thought he was made of sterner stuff, although he is probably working under some ridiculous instructions. Anyway if it is being done for the benefit of the Yanks, will we see Fortress's instead of Lancasters? If you ask me, I think it's a disgrace to the memory of the men (and women) who were involved. A story like that should be retold as accurately as possible. Biggest shame with the whole thing is they wont be able to film too many actual flying Lancasters, it will have to be computor generated images, which is never quite the same as the real thing
