  1. I'd agree with that it looks more Crossley. Dont have your range of pics to refer to, or your experience of the marque but the cab appears to have that cuving out fillet bracket above the mirrors leading up to the cab top which Crossleys seem to have but does not appear to be seen on any of the Matador pics that I have got access to. Windows seem to be shallower too, as is the case in the Crossley pics I have.
  2. And I always thought that with two hands and both feet wedged against the engine was the only approved method.:-D If you saw the punyness of my hands you'd understand why I want a torque setting.:-)
  3. Cheers gents! I know about the special spanner ( have one) only thing there is it depends upon the strength of the user as well as its length. I'm happier knowing a quoted figure. As ever, the forum comes up with useful answers within no time at all.
  4. I have the standard manuals giving the word on tightening down the cylinder head, but does anyone have a torque value for the bolts? Beyond the 'give them a good even tightening'
  5. The Elvington aircraft tug is a Dennis-Mercury. Believed ex - RAF, then Nordic Air, then Servisair (both at Leeds/ Bradford airport). Donated to the museum in 2002. Unless it has been repaired since I was last there, it is U/S as someone forgot to check the gearbox oil level. Something melted.
  6. Too easy Do it in code in Ogham or Runes or ..... no thinking about it that would take too long for too little.
  7. I seem to remember reading something (maybe on another forum?) about having to be careful wearing current uniform as that is a breach of the law. Or does it only apply to Officers uniform? If wrong on this, happy to stand corrected. But I would not want what sounds like an interesting idea to go sour. Anyone more knowledgable know if this could be true?
  8. Brilliant salvage job DP ! Well done.
  9. Even the four pixels in your example have different tone levels, which would suggest that they are not part of the same small area of paint. At the distance the pic is taken at, a red dot in good lighting would likely show up as identical tones. If it uploads ok the attached might show more of what I believe to be there. sample.doc
  10. If you have Windows Picture and Fax viewer on your machine, open the image up with that and zoom in. This doesnt have the effect that Paint has of breaking it down in to block pixels. With my screen set to a high resolution there does appear to be two numerals, or maybe even letters? Using Paint I would have agreed with the interpretation of a roundel.
  11. I guess someone with a very checkered Dodge is going to s*** himself then:-D :stop:
  12. Just to digress from the thread slightly - I'm amazed at that! I rode round for 20 odd years on bikes tarted up to look like police machines and never got stopped once. (It was the best way to avoid the SMIDSY's) In fact the local m/c training scheme still has its instructors on cop look alikes.
  13. I'd go along with some kind of identification number rather than a roundel in this case. Enlarging the image on my basic photo stuff suggests two numerals, first one a 1 or 7 , second maybe an 8 or a 'squared' type 0. I would say though that they are enclosed in an outer circle of a different hue to the general background. If I get chance I'll stick it through something more powerful at work unless someone else can come up with an answer. Not sure about the interpretation of the left as a double bridge plate. I'm not up enough on RAF / military markings to say what it might be but it doesnt look like any bridge marking I've seeen any where else. Definitely a double number at the bottom centre left but it has some smaller 'blockier' image/numbers/letters to the top right. I would have thought bridge plate numbers would have been of equal size/weighting. Just my two pennuth! (Its about all I can afford these days! )
  14. For an udder purpose. Sorry, I'll get my coat.
  15. Another MRT jeep number from a wartime pic 207865, another probably something along the lines of 17***33, but very covered in mud.
  16. If it helps Simon, my 1944 MW is RAF 128700. Could be a reference point for working either way from it. A pic I have of an early post-war jeep in a UK based Mountain Rescue Unit has the number RAF 208343
  17. The info I have on 2TAF states that, given that all vehicle painting was in a state of transistion, the move was to an overall olive green, all vehicles bore a white five pointed star on cabin tops or bonnets - not a roundel. But RAF vehicles had roundels marked on their side surfaces. A particular feature of 2TAF was the large size of the roundels which some of the heavy vehicles carried. No doubt to help avoid 'friendly fire'. RAF units carried a unit serial number marked on the cab. Front roundels were applied to the nearside wing/front rather than the usual offside. The only formation markings carried were the group numbers;2,83,84 or 85. Vehicles also carried a black painted area on the cab so that a 'convoy position' number could be chalked on. A 'type number' was also given to vehicles but sorry I cant see a number for jeeps on the list I have. This information taken from 'Wheels of the RAF'. Excuse the quality of the pics taken from this same publication. (copyright E F Cheesman)
  18. It is the same serial number as above it, but in Eastern Arabic numerals, rather than the more familiar Western Arabic(and European) numerals. Presumably so the local plod can give you a ticket for speeding past his camel :-D But then again of course it could just be a badly painted 'TOYOTA'
  19. I use a substantial padlock and chain between the pedal and the steering wheel. No opportunist thief will drive it away, relatively cheap and VERY effective. Agree it doesnt stop the 'lifters' - but what will? tracking once gone does seem to be the only follow up on that. I once had a motorbike fitted with an anti theft device which shot a four inch barbed spike up through the seat and effectively 'restrained' the thief. (It had to be four inches to get through the foam) But that was in the days of a more enlightened approach by the authorities to such things, couldnt get away with it these days. It did work though! .
  20. Ted has all the stuff for this as well, but I think I am correct in saying that immediate post war it would have had black wings as well as bumpers. Dont have the AMO in front of me to say what year this was phased out though. White roof date I cant say, all I have reference to is high vis yellow. TED!!!!!!
  21. I'd also recommend Leger, no experience of any of the others so cant give a priority.
  22. P66 is right it is not on and unless things change, from what I hear, is likely to stay not on without a significant change. If that is your beast in your avatar then you probably wouldnt have got it in to Renishaw anyway! :)Other events around Sheffield? phew, bit thin on the ground. Strictly military only is probably few and far between and some are pure WW2. However, although I didnt get to it myself I'm told the Chatsworth House 'do' was good. There was also a WW2 event billed to run the same weekend as Renishaw over at Clumber Park. Not heard any feedback on that one and haven't looked to see if it is on this year. Many of the local (ish) 'general' rallies/steam etc also have space for a military section and you might get a good weekend or day out there if you dont mind mixing with the general interest stuff. Thinking of Barnsley, Ackworth, Nostell and so on. The biggest pure military up North has to be Elvington in May, but that isnt just down the road is it? If you come across any more list them for us all. Edit- Belvoir steam fair always has a good military section. Not too far off. May 30th Burghwallis near Donny - http://www.wwiireenacting.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=104&t=50523&sid=c9b6afe373a6aa444f93c9d6df825cff 16/17 May Belvoir 13/14 June Clumber (Eventplan) 15/16 August Rufford Park Home front event (Eventplan) August bank hol Sheffield Fayre multi period event incl.WW2, so maybe a bit more than I first thought.(Eventplan)
  23. The Gloucester AAA battery at Blyth. Fantastically well preserved with most of the support structure still surviving. I'd really like one in my back garden.
