  1. Yes a fine bit of flying...... as I understand it the pilots in the film were mostly vets from WW2 and had probably flown lower than that up canals in Holland with real bullets flying around. At the time of the film there was little idea of preserving airframe life for the future so they would pull quite a few G's when filming. I well remember seeing a Shackelton display shortly before they were retired .... the pilot evidently had little thought for airframe or engine life.... his low pass was a sight to behold... passing speed was not far short of the previous Hurricane and as he climbed away all four engines were black smoking like they were running on coal...... he also performed a wingover that would have done a fighter proud :cool2:
  2. "[ ( Holding the key in the start position for a couple of seconds may make the the bad conection hot so you can find it )" Reminds me of when I was on an electrical course with some lads from Ireland... we were set various tests and had vehicles with faults placed on them that we had to fix .One of the Irish lads explained how electricity was not invisible but was infact like smoke.... he went on to say if you had a machine that kept blowing fuses then all you had to do was hold your penknife across the fuse terminals and you would see where the problem was because the electricity would leak out like smoke from the damaged wire. The blade of his penknife looked like a saw it had so many burns on it . "If you still have no joy jab a screwdriver accross the big contacts on the solanoid and see if it spins over. Just make sure it's not in gear :cool2:
  3. Not realy , if 24v is arriving at the soleniod then anything else is internal to the starter , you could try using a wire from the batt straight to the soleniod to eliminate any faults in the system down to the soleniod. If you are using just a test light then all you are proving is that a supply of 24v is reaching the soleniod .... one strand of wire will do this... you need to know that the starter has a supply of 24v that can also give the required amps to the starter. Check all the connections both + and earth , take them off.. clean them with some emerey cloth and then make sure they are tight . Check the earth lead from the chassis to the engine block .
  4. Well if anyone can make a tank in a garage with just a pile of scrap and a gas torch..... that would be you then :-D
  5. Good luck :-D , we were told if you follow what was then the dirt road up to the top of the mountains behind Lapta then turn right at the top and Keep following the road as high as you can go its just off the road to the left faceing the greeks , don't do as I did and end up in the TRNC base that was up there :embarrassed:, if you find it post some pics .
  6. I would say they are def from an aircraft ...as to what type ... no idea .
  7. They look like Range wrecks to me , still what a discovery, never find tanks in the woods when out walking the dogs round here ...only parts of them.... sections of Sherman track and some as yet unidentified track from a center guide tracklayer of some sort.. bits of Halifax with the paint still on .
  8. I've spent hrs driving up in the mountains behind Lapta looking for an abandoned tank some locals told me was up in the hills , never found it though . That was about 8 years ago so may not even be there now, the Turkish army were all still running around in Hotchkiss jeeps then. Am told the coast line from Kyrenia down to Lapta and beyond is now all being developed , when I was last there it was mostly still coast and very few hotels and none high-rise. Had one of the best meals ever at the Old Police house overlooking the harbour at Kyrenia , the food was excellent and the view as the sun set was perfect , sitting under the tree of idelness at Belapais with a cold beer was another favorite.
  9. No doubt depends on who is holding the end of the tape :cool2:
  10. Andy -(Jemima) , Any one that takes the time to raise money for H4H deserves all our support , don't be down or feel kicked in the nuts , the majority of people here support your efforts fully , good luck and keep it up , crack on . Graham
  11. I'm sure we all have had someone point out that "in service the widget was fitted on the wibble , not like you have it " at some show or the other, Fair play its not a real snatch ... are there any in civy hands ? ... but the guy is using it to raise funds for H4H , something I think we will all agree is a worthwile cause and in the 3 years since I took part in the H4H bike ride in 08 and struggled to raise sponsorship has grown into a fantastic charity that spends all it recieves. He's having fun and doing no harm and may even get a genuine Mil vehicle in the future , our hobby includes allsorts , most hotchkiss jeeps are painted in American markings... are they any better ? Recy Mech unintentionaly stired up a series of comments with the observation that its not a real snatch , personaly I looked at the thread thinking it may be about another thing altogether:D:-D ... oh well .
  12. Think I can speak for Mr Scott and say put our names down again .... he may even bring something larger this time .... i may even bring the wife ... it was an awsome experiance and in my humble oppinion shouldn't try to be repeated, but should be as Jack suggests different but along the same theme. Two days sounds good , saving for fuel as of now . :-D
  13. Don't know ...but it was at Shoreham Airshow at the weekend.
  14. [ Against my advice my firm has just bought three 2010 Range Rover Vogues. One is a pool car. Which i use. Already the digital analogue dash has crashed three times. and we have had gearbox issues(electronic) I think its safe to say that we wont be getting them again. But thats the way its been with all land rover products(bar defender) over the last 15 years. Landrover and electrics ..... never good when mentioned in the same sentance :-D As someone who often "fixes" modern farm machinery with a lap top I fear electrics less than many.... however sometimes its all just too clever for its own good . Often wonder if all these modern new generation mill vehicles with common rail engines forced on them by daft emmision regs , couldn't all be stopped in their tracks by a hefty dose of Electromanetic interfearance .... simply fry the ECU and it will stop
  15. "Why 'even' a Skoda? The local police use them and reckon they are great, especially the disiel" Sorry didn't mean to be rude about Skoda's , just I started with the Audi Allroad which is not exactly the cheapest of cars even s/h , the newer Skoda's are just VW's with a different badge realy so are very good . As others have said ... don't buy a 4x4 for one weeks bad weather a year , an all wheel drive car would be much better than even the smallest of the 4x4's .. eg - Freelander or whatever , they all are as airodynamic ( need spell checker  ) as a brick and suffer from the school run image , an all wheel drive car or estate is much more discreet as most won't even notice its a 4wd . If you need to tow heavy things and need to go off road then buy a Landcruiser or Landrover , anything else is just a compromise
  16. If the only reason you are considering a 4x4 is the winter weather then buy an Audi Allroad or something like a Subaru estate or even Skoda 4x4 estate , they will all be sure footed in the winter and as they are much lighter than any off -road type 4x4 will be better in the ice when the momentum gained by a large 4x4 on sheet ice is not to be underestimated , we are unlikely to get another winter like the last for many years so ultimate performance in 8 inches of snow is not very high on the list. I drive a huge 4x4 with a 4.2 l turbo diesel , 3 diff locks , and go anywhere tyres but on black ice its no better than anything else. If you want 4x4 looks but not size then the Honda CRV is a very good bet , steer clear of early LR Freelanders with K series engines as there may well be trouble a head :-( .
  17. I may be wrong but... it seems that all of those making judgments and comments on the rights and wrongs of war are ALL doing it with the luxury of hindsight and without the fear and miss-information that was present at the time these actions took place some 65 odd years ago . I doubt any of those commenting were of an age to comprehend what was going on , if they were even alive , I feel that while we should learn from history ( something as humans we seem sadly unable to do ) , we only damage the memory of the many brave men and women of all sides by questioning the actions of for instance the airmen who flew over Dressden, who fought a war that those of us with vehicles from that period but that were not even a twinkle in our fathers eye will never fully be able to appreciate what happened and the feelings of the time. We can judge Hiroshima from the comfort of the 21st century , what we can't do is forget those things we have learned since ... I'm fairly certain if we could travel back in time and ask any allied soldier , sailor or airman , or their families if the bomb was the right thing to do the answer would be yes without any question , we were at war . My heart go's out to the young lads and lady's who today are fighting a war in Afghan where every round , every action , has to be accounted for in the full view of an at times biased press , yet those very soldiers are fighting a war on a battle field that is just as shrouded in the mist of war as those fields were in Normandy 65 years ago, without the convienance of your enemy wearing a uniform to identify himself.
  18. Just to add a -" get well soon" to the list ,
  19. I agree... as a speculative investment a good early spec deac will go up in value and will deff earn you more than if the money was sitting in a bank currently , one concern may be the law is changed and overnight they become worthless , however if you just want a gun shaped piece of metal to put on a vehicle then a replica may be a better option ..... I'm happy to leave my jeep parked up unattended at events with a .50 on it simply because its only a rep and cost me £300 ... if I had a genuine £1800 .50 on the jeep I wouldn't be so relaxed about just leaving it parked up say when going shopping at the W&P .
  20. Personaly I don't think .50's are a good investment unless its a wartime dated original .... its still a current weapon and a such stocks are constantly available with as pointed out many bitsa's out there ... did see a very nice one at W&P and nearly had to strip it to see where it was deacted ... however any deact is just a lump of metal ... it will never go bang again  , and with very good replicas available for £350 I struggle to justify spending another £1200 just because its a real one, mounted on a vehicle and only visable from 6ft away my replica has fooled serving soldiers that were shooting .50s for real only months before . That however is only my opinion :-D , if it still went bang I'd buy one like a shot :cool2:
  21. We saw two... but they were straight :nut:
  22. Yes have to agree , Adrian , John and myself didn't get up to the beertent untill 23.45 ish , had a couple of beers and left shortly after you and the girls , was nothing like friday night ... couldn't explain why though.. had they had a tip off ? ... normaly the atmosphere is one of the most laid-back you could ever find , watched some of Kellys Heroes opposite the USO on friday night :cool2: .. then got in the half-track and drove a very happy crew back to the campsite at silly o clock ... sorry we did try and be as quiet as its poss to be in a half -track . .
  23. Can confirm the "love trailer" was always surrounded by young ladies everytime we drove past , the lovely Laura ? ( left in pic ) won best in show as far as I'm concerned :-D , reckon they had a good time if very little sleep over the weekend. How you going to top that though Mark .... two love trailers ?
  24. Re the three ladies ...."Random" pic of "totty" .. so thats what you told the Mrs ? .. don't know what aftershave Mr Heliops use's but these three were often in his company :cool2: , perhaps he should bottle it and sell it as the " Rugged Boys " better than Brut 33 anyday.
