2. this was interesting http://www.news.com.au/world/letter-delivered-67-years-late-informs-family-that-soldier-ernest-browne-died-in-wwii/story-e6frfkyi-1226216634426
3. wash your mouth out with soap some of the guys in here would build a Sherman tank out of less than that
4. It does sound odd. I wonder if it is some type of agreement made at the govt level at the beginning
5. G'dayVery tolerent in here even of us aussies
6. No damage then, apart from oil all over the place. Back over to Cambridge in January so looking forward to my favourite bootsale and hopefully a Withams tender
7. I made that mistake 3 times :nut: The piccies didn't work I use two ways to shrink pictures for this forum: - I post them on a yahoo group if you are in one. As yahoo groups automatically reduce the file sizes. Then copy them and delete from the yahoo group - If using Microsoft outlook you can highlight pictures and email to yourself. As Microsoft Outlook reduces the file sizes, then I upload Curious to see what this truck is as a search of fwdhar1 came up with nothing.
8. And another A day spent trawling through old docs :nut:
9. Two in the same day....... I am either reading the right books or I am in serious troubles Mind you the German operating manual are more interesting to look at as it appears treating your tank like semi naked women was an acceptable training techinique
10. Found a new one to add to the list from a very interesting intelligence report
11. Damn just read 126 pages of original Japanese Monograph No.68 but no talk of cranes. Very detailed a very frank about the poor planning setting up the installations and that more effort was spent on accomodations areas than defencible positions. An interesting read. One 15" gun was salvageable His report does not cover the Naval dockyard. More digging required
12. Some leads Thank you for your email. There should be a Japanese report after their engineers and specialist reviewed the war booty and infrastructure within weeks of occupying Singapore in 1942. The most famous of these is the fortress fact finding team led by Lt.Col. Masataka Numaguchi of Army Technical HQ and Major Katsuji Akiyama of the Army Heavy Artillery School which produced the original Japanese Monograph No.68 (published by the Chief of Military History in 1958). I believe there must be similar files evaluated by the Japanese Naval Board for the the Singapore harbour and docks where the cranes were purportedly to be last seen. Apologies that I cannot be of further help, I wish I know which precise direction to point you to, but the Public Record Office, and the National Library of Australia holds copies of the above Monograph No.68 and I believe other files pertaining to the after the battle survey/inspection carried out by the Japanese. I hope this helps somewhat. Regards, Chen.
13. ahhhh confusion reigns........ Johore battery was on Singapore island not in Johor. The guns were paid for by the Sultan of Johor Buona Vista had 15 inch also Johor also had a battery but the size is not stated http://victorkoo.blogspot.com/2010/11/old-singapore-quiz-20-yet-another-old_29.html
14. That is an interesting mystery. I cannot see that it would have been used to move around guns as I dont think there was any real attempt to upgrade the place before the Japanese came down through Malaya. The main defensive position with 15 inch guns was in Johore (Malaysia as Singapore as a country did not exist at that point) Sentosa and I would not have thought the guys there big enough to warrant such a large crane also I have never seen a large enough rail system on the island. May have been a lot different back then. At several locations the artillery was pushed off the hill top positions into the ocean and quickly recovered by the Japanese. I would suspect these were sent possibly to Singapore Naval Base at Sembawang (It was completed in 1939 at a staggering cost of £60 million[1] — equivalent to £2½ billion in 2006. The dock covered 21 square miles (54 km2) and had what was then the largest dry dock in the world, the third-largest floating dock, and enough fuel tanks to support the entire British Navy for six months.). Possibly to unload the guns Interesting thing about Sembawang is a lot of old stuff still being used, modified etc so may be a good place to start if you can find some historical society. maybe a starting place http://travel.nuraina.com/tumpat-train-station/
15. I don't know, but reckon leave it in there. Some of the best parts in rebuild threads is the dropped stuff found under engines. I can read it now "pulled the engine out and found an antique phone" :-D
16. I got a secondhand set of tyres for my Suzuki. The tyres were like brand new but the locals here said they were no good as they were manufactured a few years back. I thought bollocks never had issues with tyres before and should last long time if looked after. But low and behold, 3 of the 4 blew out duing the next 6 months with the side walls failing. To me it seems tyres have gone the same way as everything else i.e. only made good enough to last 2 to 3 years then you have to buy a new set.
17. Mate snapped this in Sudan
18. this may also be useful as explains how some of the bits work http://www.w124performance.com/service/W126/w126CD1/program/Engine/602_603/07.1-010.pdf
19. I just like an interesting challenge, plus I dig around the Merc forums a lot  Should be a Bosch injection pump of the PES 5 M 55 C 320 RS 158, PES 5 M 55 C 320 RS 157, PES 5 M 55 C 320 RS 177 or PES 5 M 55 C 320 RS 178 should be able to get the bit direct from Bosch (but I have to say some times it cheaper to buy a whole secondhand unit) Apparently Pacific Fuel Injection in California is highly recommended and the guy to talk to is Gus Pfister . He may have a spare bit laying around
20. If it is an OM603 engine it is fitted to other Mercs sent to the US, so may be worth a chance to look under the hood on one of those and see if a similar device exists http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercedes-Benz_OM603 something else I dug up is the vacum pumps fail and it's described as "Anyone driving an OM60x engine needs to make sure they check to see if their vacuum pump is original (crimped on cover, and thus a ticking bomb) or replacement (screwed on cover)." Anyway send over some photos and I'll keep digging
21. Olive drab was common for US stuff and you can find it on the BS381c colour charts as 298 or 278 which is the lighter shade http://lightweightlandroverclub.org/phpbb/download.php?id=729&f=4&sid=a33c75bbbd9123952f858f94dfeee366 You ask them to make matt or satin, HMG is a good supplier Does your jeep have any military background? I seen one over here plus the Kia Motor type also made under license
22. We had a plague go through Oakey and what we did was hinge a steel ruler on a bucket and tape bait to the underside of the end they walk down the ruler and fall into the bottom and cant get out
23. Tidy up the front floor. Fit the MoD steering stalk water proofing kit (never again) Some detailing
24. Speedo needs to be sent away for some TLC Rear light grilles modified to screw on instead of clip. I don't want them falling off as I am stingy that way Started on the jack overhaul as I got around 6 jacks. Most the seals look easy but the pump one looks odd, hopefully not. and the engine overhaul, but snapped a piston ring so on hold until I get replacements
25. Well got the chance to start the rear door modifications. Made spacers but to get it to fit better and get a nice gap and spare wheel arm position it was easier to drill larger holes and tack each in the correct position. Also have to fill all the holes no longer required. Will take it to work tomorrow and have it fully tig welded, then fit an internal stiffener and off to the panel beaters to make it look straighter. Hopefully the top half will arrive before Christmas
