  1. I take it you mean the Foden DROPS? The Leyland Daf is the Scammel looking one (same company more or less, but they are Leyland Daf trucks) Don't know about the Foden, I'm only trained on the Leyland Daf DROPS. The laden weight of the prime mover is 32,000kgs and believe it or not you only get 960kgs more laden weight with the Foden. With the King Trailer you have an all up weight of 55 tonnes which is STGO Category 2. I would rather get my hands on a Seddon Atkinson HET with a low loader trailer. By the time you've bought the DROPS and it's trailer you might as well get an HET.

  6. Anti Freeze should, in general, be changed every two years. Some products are long life and last for five years. Having said that I haven't changed the anti freeze in my Defender in ages. I've got some work on in the spring as I need to do all 3 of my vehicles. By the way the AL39 I've got in the garage (which I found there one day:cool2:) is very blue and very thick, I don't know who makes the military anti freeze though.
  7. I never touched that stuff Delta, even though there was drums of it everywhere in the service bay. The Army does have a habit of making a man drink alcohol in copious amounts and I wasn't any different than the next man. Most Op tours are dry tours so no alcohol for the whole time your out. On the other hand the Falkland Islands have a very good rep for turning men (and women) into alcoholics...:shake:

  9. I live a few miles from RAF Benson, and for some reason Benson always seems to be the coldest place in England. Last night it went down MINUS 18 Deg C, yes -18 deg C. Got into work this morning and waited 3 hours for someone to make a decision about what we were going to do. They eventually sent us out for collections as we couldn't get the pallets off the trailer for the deliverys as the yard was 3 inches deep in rutted ice. -18 I think is the same as a domestic freezer, so it was definitely cold...
  10. Have you Googled Methanol Poisoning, it's not a very pleasant I can tell you!! You are right Richard, it's AL14 for the brake anti freeze. The other alcohol is AL11 which is Isopropanol for the windscreen wash (VERY good stuff by the way, mix 25% Iso to 75% water and it will not freeze and you don't get any gunk forming in the tank) I wouldn't have thought the Methanol would have caused any problems unless your air brake rubber components and the system in general isn't designed for it. My MJ is fitted with a Methanol brake anti freeze container. When the engine is running the vacume caused by a device in the compressor sucks air through a small pipe. Air enters the bottom of the bottle and air bubbles flow through the Methanol and the resulting vapour is sucked into the compressor and then it flows round the system. I presume the rubber used in the MJ is designed for the Methanol system and shouldn't perish.
  11. Woke up this morning to about 10 inches of snow. Decided to go to work (as I have a 4x4 and couldn't use the - "I can't get in excuse"). Loaded up for 2 drops in Thatcham, 4 in Newbury, 2 Greenham way and then Hungerford and Lambourne. Hungerford had about a foot of snow. The traffic was very light and everyone seemed to be off work. My Mrs went into work and called at 11am saying that no kids turned up to school and she was sent home. It's turned into rock hard ice now so not looking forward to tomorrow.
  12. I don't know about your truck, but if you haven't got an air dryer then you will need brake anti freeze. As the air condenses it will create moisture. If this freezes then you will be at risk of brake or steering failure. I used to drive trucks with an Eaton Twin Splitter. The gear shift for the range change works by air, and if the air dryer was knackered the moisture in the air line would freeze in cold temps and then the selector would no longer work and you would be left without gears.
  13. Just looked at the forcast and noticed a Severe Weather Warning for Oxfordshire. We are forcast up to 16 inches of Snow!!! YES, bring it on. If it's that bad I will have to call in and tell work I'm not coming in, I don't want to be driving a truck in that!! Still will have to wait and see as you never get what they say...
  14. She still has two .50 cal machine guns on deck and with the link above the aft gun can clearly be seen. Bombs stacked 7.5 meters in height in the lower hold, jesus, you wouldn't want that lot going up. :sweat::shocked:

  16. Exactly Basil. The engine design on these trucks is, well, ancient. But the 330 diesel is a very good engine, it may be slow and under powered, but it's cheap on fuel and it will get you to your destination.:-D

  18. Stone is correct in that the 330 has an output of 108bhp. But remember this is probably for a new engine. Every engine will vary considerably. I've driven artics that are rated at, say, 460bhp, but every truck will pull differently. An engine will work better if it's been pulling maximum weight since new. I've driven trucks that were used on very light work. Once you need to use it for heavy work they die up hill, where as the same make and engine size of a truck that's been used on maximum weight all it's life will go far better. Don't know why this is though? The MJ's are very under powered in my opinion. A Reo is (I think) 8 litres and 140bhp for equivalent total weight. The bigger Ural 4320 has a monster 10.8ltr V8 diesel producing 240bhp, plenty of engine for the size of the truck.

  20. Very nice. I REALLY want a Ural 4320 V8 diesel like the one on Richard Moore's site, the second one down pictured at Tesco's. I love the look of these trucks and they have massive power. Your looking at over £10k though, and I've heard parts can be a real problem. Your truck looks great, has it got a 2 stroke diesel?
