  1. I believe early V8 Pilots had a version of the pre war v8 2.2 ltr Later ones had the 3.6 V8 Dagenham built engine 21 stud Idetifiable as it had ENFO cast into major parts. I think it was used in other Ford products.
  2. Were there not some photographs of track laid down as a road in Australia on this forum.
  3. Michelins X tyre range are a long evolution tyre designed and developed over many years. Original X tyres are classed as vintage type with a side wall and tread base designed to perform different tasks within one carcase. Letters after X signify modern stage development through its lifetime, different compounds and tread patterns. That is my understanding of the range.
  4. In the where he is sitting on the bonnet, I wonder if the negative was the wrong way around as the numbers are reversed. It appears to have a broken wheel stud.
  5. I did not listen to that little voice of doubt again.Sorry I will remove.
  6. This thread has moved a long way in both time and distance. We are closer to the 2nd world war wreck of Scharnhorst now. Those unforgetable pictures of Tallboys in flight heading towards Turpitz with the main armalment sending shells towards the Lancasters. A lot of the original exploritory navigation work flying in and around the Arctic was done by Pathfinder Bennett.
  7. Going from 1100x20 to 1200x20 you will need to check all clearances including full lock, depending on tyre brand and tread pattern. Going from memory there will be roughly 4 inches difference in tyre diamiter and a similar width difference. For a given engine revs speed will change also engine work and gearbox driveline peramiters will change. Engine overheating could become an issue. Brakes will have to work harder because of the larger tyres.
  8. Runflat tyres are for operational reasons, the enviroment the vehicle would be expected to be in. In civvy life Tyre size matching, Radial or Cross ply. Ply Rating, Tonne Mile per Hour rating, Maximum Speed rating and pressure, are the important things. As well as general tyre care looking for blebs, cuts, Sidwall cracking, nails etc. This applies whether you run motorway tread patten, Offroad patten, Snow, Quarry or soft ground low profile or any of the specialist tread pattens available. Wheels come in various guises, different offsets, different J sizes, centre diamiter stud spacing and stud numbers, spigot mounted, tapered nut and washer, split rim, tube, tubeless,1 piece 2 piece 3 piece and 4 piece. With various rim locking methods. All need to be treated with equal RESPECT. Air pressure above 3psi can pierce the skin and cause health problems, high pressure air or any tyre fill needs to be treated with caution. Handling instructions are available and should be read.
  9. HI Andy, Sorry I do not have a reference, It was in a book I had years ago there were also photos of the machine that did the calculations in the Hood.
  10. It was an item on Jeremy Vine this morning. Dan was a guest.
  11. It is one of Dan Snows new projects, he goes diving amongst the items dumped by the British after the war. I stand to be corrected but I think a Panzer3 and a Pak40 in the picture I have seen plus some loose tank track.
  12. I wonder if Bluebell is watching this thread develop, Please keep the pictures coming.
  13. Even in WW1 what are now called primative computers were used for Gunnery calculations. A case study has been made of the flaws in the one used on HMS HOOD. It was known that her main armalment calculations were wrong and she would overshoot, especially at longer ranges.
  14. Now that this disused quarry in the Channel Islands is going to get so much publicity, will the submerged German armour remain underwater.
  15. I think to access a property over a footpath a dropped kerb is required. You will have to check on the kerb foundation. Turning with any tracked vehicle runs the risk of surface damage, some conveyor belt, old tyres, or sacrifice plywood stratigically placed can stop damage.
  16. I remember some photographs in the Wheatcroft Collection, of Sherman Radial engines in work/ transport stands like those.
  17. 25/11/1940. First flight of the De Havilland DH 98 Mosquito W 4050
  18. A question, What is on the trailer? 2nd photo last batch.
  19. On one of Guy Martins programs they Air Dropped one of these, then he started and rode the motor cycle on the runway. I think it belonged to a teacher.
  20. You can buy boxes of asssorted rubber plugs and grommets, have a look on line or your local motor factor or have a hunt at your local vehicle scrap yard, in the fire walls of vehicles.
  21. There was a long way West to go in North Africa and many battles, but Winstone Churchill had made his end of the beginning speech. I think this goes to signify the end of the battle of Egypt. A major turning point with operation Torch to come and Kasserine Pass still to fight.
