  1. Grease & oil good. But there are some misunderstandings about grease v oil lubrication. The 1954 EMER states that after assembly of the hub "fill with oil" The 1956 amendment deleted "fill with oil" & substituted "pack with grease" Many Pigs in NI were fitted with hexagonal lubrication "nipples" on the hubs that unfortunately are perceived to be an invitation to squirt grease into the hub. Sometimes justified by quoting the 1956 amendment. But the 1960 User Handbook states that the hubs should be topped up with oil. The replacement of the brass plug screws by lubrication nipples was a matter of convenience for the more rapid injection of oil. The 1956 amendment was badly worded as it implied grease was the sole lubricant. The 1974 Servicing Schedule clarified the situation: "Hubs should be packed with grease on assembly and on periodic servicing should be topped up with oil in accordance with the instructions laid down in the User Handbook. The grease and oil specified are miscible."
  2. Nigel thank you I did get your PM & replied. But maybe the reply was held back because of the fullness issue? Anyway thanks again but a Saloon Humber Pig is an interesting concept
  3. Try John Walker Looks like some useful bits you've got there Wayne
  4. Well I have just been able to do what I wanted to do last Friday & changed the coil. However testing the defective coil showed that is could still provide an adequate output. So I connected it to a 13.5v power supply & measured the current at 30 sec intervals for 20 mins, periodically testing the insulation at 5,000v. The initial insulation resistance was 26 Megohms, which is not very good, but it was functioning as a coil. After 15 mins the coil was moderately hot & insulation resistance had dropped to 3.5 Megohms. After 20 mins the coil was hot enough to only be touchable for 10 secs & the insulation resistance had dropped to 1.4 Megohms. It took nearly an hour before the coil would provide any sort of spark on my tester, despite it externally being only moderately warm. Oh & the spare I had ready had an insulation resistance of 7.0 Gigohms. From that I have learnt to only break down in a layby & only rely on a coil test once the coil is quite hot.
  5. Looks like the goat doesn't want to dance
  6. There are another 5 flow charts if you need to work further along Tony & even drawings of oscilloscope traces at various stages. Quite detailed information just for a phone!
  7. I'm sure it was the coil overheating that I had replaced earlier in the year. The frustrating thing was that although I had another coil with me & all the tools & test equipment one could wish for, it was far too dangerous to attempt a repair positioned around a bend partly in the slip road of the A3(M) We had to stop a few miles down the road to reload it more centrally as it was having an adverse effect on the recovery vehicle's stability  Was a bit difficult trying to explain to the recovery company that it was slightly different looking Land Rover. Yes Andy the Pig wouldn't have let me down, but it wouldn't have been very welcome at a Land Rover show
  8. You need to look for these Tony, I have them but I think they are FAESPs 5805-J-201-101 Telephone Set 2 Wire UK/PTC/404. Purpose & Planning Information. 9. Near Petersfield Friday night.
  10. Thanks Paul got mine. I can see a lot work going on getting it all ready for us, thank you
  11. For those who want to go, then go. For those who don't want to go, then don't. I'm happy to go, things are still evolving.
  12. Dave was it not the same vehicle?
  13. I suppose the thing is, when did you last use the vehicle? I try to drive everything at least once a month throughout the year. I learnt my lesson with one vehicle & didn't drive it for 12 years. The fuel system became clogged up with a brown gunge resembling shellac, had no problems since I adopted the once a month routine.
  14. 5U means it is aircraft, if it was MT electrical it would be 16E
  15. OWT Started late 1952 & the last Humbers were delivered in 1956, although there were a couple in 1957.
  16. There are certainly dogs here although they are none keen on the gunfire that goes on from time to time.
  17. Are you ok for carb diagrams etc? I notice the Q2 manual of 1950 was heavily amended in 1951.
  18. Although not in the diagram, the UHB for the Command Post SAGW No.3 Mk 1 makes reference to the battery having one Field Assembly and Test Point (FATP). Perhaps there would be a K9 in the FATP.
  19. Pekka this is the Command Post set up with two RL Bedfords, unfortunately I don't have the book for the test facilities.
