H licence training

BRDM Driver

Recommended Posts

Terry Brooks usually gets very good recommendations but not sure where he is although it is 'down south' somewhere (as is anywhere south of sheffield!)...

Alternatively get the dvla booklet on specialist driving tests, read it cover to cover several times and get out and practice...total cost £62.50 plus petrol of course..!

There have been a number of threads on h tests if you search for it.

I'd suggest getting some tuition mind you - the book is ok, but it doesn't tell you to watch your back end on corners etc. and that's probably an expensive lesson to learn if you've not been told :D

Given that you are down that way anyway, have you asked the tank museum? If they don't run courses themselves they may be able to point you toward someone in the area that does (though it might be a tank regiment recruiting centre :)

This is Nick Mead at Tanks a lot, based in Northants NN13 5QD

Terry Brooks, is Near Margate in Kent....

Its not hard to do your track Licence, just practice and practice driving the vehicle you plan to use and get use to how it behaves braking and turning. and book your own test, from memory its around £65 at worst and you dont pass youve only lost that... but hey its your money.

i did mine with terry brooks, he is indeed near manston airfield near ramsgate. the course you follow at terry's is forgiving because only a third of it is proper highway, a third is old runway and the last third is quiet factory estate. dont worry yourself about the test, you just have to show you can drive a tracked vehicle with awareness. just swot up on the new highway code and current legislation and ask members on here what questions you may expect to be asked. as for maintenance on cvrt or 432, there is a wealth of material in the hobby

That sounds like a good course. It says it covers maintenance as well - was that bit any good?

Got mine back with SVT too (DVLA screwed up - again - and took the H off when they yanked the PSV/HGV's off my license). Course was excellent, maintenance was more geared to CVR(T)'s but was a good general basis to build on.

I'd recommend them but as Andy said - not the cheapest.

The maintenance was very much "First Parade" stuff and aimed at CVR(T)s (I passed my test in a Scorpion) but useful just the same.

They tried me in the Scorpion - took me half on hour to get out.. So I did it in the Sultan! :D

I have the opposite problem, Spartan is still easier to get in and out of but I can hardly see out with scopes and smokes in place! Find the Sabre has much better visibility and would imagine much easier on road (not been on road in Spartan as yet)...

Looks like excavators a definately out!

The category of vehicle you describe is that of a category H (vehicles steered by their tracks). This category does not include vehicles designed, constructed and used for excavation work, which are normally allowed to be driven to and from the place of operation by category B licence holders.

For someone in Dorset there is a place I believe that does Tank Driver training from a farm next to the A31 in Hampshire. I pass it often but cannot recall the exact spot - but it is on the A31 around Alton when driving to Wincheter. Someone will know the name.

The farm used for the firm is visible from the road

Why bother with a mini-digger even if it did qualify, especially as you have a Scorpion..!

I did mine off my own back partly to save money but also coz I have my own vehicles and spend a lot of time seeking and taking advice from people more knowledgeable than myself. Don't understand why people would want to short cut the learning process...at the end of the day it's a big responsibility esp on road. It is one thing hacking round a field where it doesn't matter if you get it wrong by 6 foot - do that on the road and you will be in big trouble..! OK lecture over..!

Of course you are right Tim!

I was interested in exploring the options given the postings here about this...

Ideally I would like to do the test in the Scorpion, on the road.

I am hoping that I can track down some tuition from someone at the Tank Museum or ABRO's both very cose to me.

I am also fortunate that everyone is used to learners in tanks round here! I have often driven along behind a Chally on it's was to or from the training grounds - quite a sight and sound!

The warthogs seem to go round in packs and there area nearly always a load of Spartans parked up at the burger van across the road from us every morning...

I can add terry's course is great, he is spot on and very helpful....the training is good and it builds your confidence. his vehicles are well maintained and whilst I am sure a bit of training never goes amiss, not sure its any use for the test.

Interestingly when i did my course in 2010, and my licence came back it showed my entitlement was back in 1977, I didnt need to do the test at all...silly me but I feel much better for having done a bit of road training anyway...

now i feel much more able to drive my 432 on the road safely...

I occasionally work out of Dorset Green Technology Park, so I know what you mean!

I think you'll find that the ABRO/DSG civilian drivers are trained by SVT ...
