Jack
I maybe stupid but.... What is oil pressure all about? I always watch the gauge and I know that it is ok but thats because I have been told that it is ok. But what is it bad when it is high? I am guessing that it is bad when it is low because it isn't being circulated?! :?
0 Mark
It's bad when low so the oil does not create the pressure this is when you stop and check and normally top up
0 Chappers
Hi jack It's bad when its too high because it can blow past your oil seals or split old weak oil hoses.
0 Richard Farrant
Jack, Basically it is low pressure when bearing are worn, not allowing oil to build up to correct pressure........or if the oil level is to low, through leaks or burning. High pressure could be obstructions in the oilway, ie sludge, blocked filter, (depending on design of oil system) or relief valve stuck. 0 Jack
Cheers guys. Richard if I had any of the problems that you mentioned above, would the oil pressure rise immediately or over a period of time? Best wishes. Jack.
0 Degsy
Come clean Jack, what exactly are the symptoms? :? :-)
0 Jack
Come clean Jack, what exactly are the symptoms? :? :-) Actually mate, there isn't any, I was looking at the gauge this weekend whilst I was driving and thinking to myself that the oil pressure was ok.....just because it always reads the same. Then I thought that I don't actually know if that was good or bad!
0 Degsy
Some times I worry about you .......... but not very often. :banghead:
0 stanpart57
Always reads the same, I'd worry that the gauge is stuck! But then I worry about a lot of things............ Paul.
0 Jack
Got you Paul. So I am thinking that if the pressure was wrong then it would of blown up by now so if it fluctuates dramatically between its 'non blowing up pressure' then it has to be OK, right?! 0 Richard Farrant
Jack, When it is started from cold, pressure may be a little high and drop back a bit once warmed up. Unless it is abnormally low or high, I should not worry unduly. You should note now what the pressure is when warmed up and note that so you can then be aware of any sudden differences. 0 Jack
Thank you Richard, that is indeed the case but I will make a note tomorrow of what is what and where it is. Thanks for your help! Jack
0 Jessie The Jeep
I quite liked the wartime comments about the Pratt & Whitney radial aircraft engines..... "The P&W engine should always leak oil. If it doesn't, put some in quick, it's empty!" Does your oil pressure change with RPM? On my jeep, with the engine at idle, the pressure is low ( not dangerously ), and then picks up to normal as soon as the revs increase. 0 Degsy
Thats normal with all vehicles Steve, if that doesn't happen expensive noises can be expected, :argh:
