  1. I wish he was here just so that I could say a massive thank you to him. It was speaking to him over the phone many decades ago that got me interested in the history of my vehicles. Now I try to appreciate a story behind every piece of kit.
  2. The trailer pictured in post #59 would have to be quite early. If I have this right (not great on WW11 era stuff) The WD registration number is X194615 which is very low at just 6 numbers. It is an American registration system from started in 1929. X I recall means it is not attached to any unit within a division, 1 means it is a trailer or handcart. 94615 is the 5 figure serial number for this equipment. Low number means early because by 1943'ish most serials were 6 digits long.
  3. The worst Land Rover of all time has to be the Suzuki SJ! I am not kidding: Lift the bonnet on one (if any are left in the world) and they will say built under license by Land Rover. That said, the ones before Land Rover helped out were far worse. They fell over and killed people, unfortunately not just the occupants. After that it has to be the Series 3 or the Range Rover. I know Land Rover had to break into the use of plastics and vinyls, but until they did they were great as the tool they were designed to be. Plastics in cars should be banned. Recycling them would be far easier and safer then.
  4. Consider trying Amazon then! Several automotive suppliers in the states sell it for around the same price. They will post to the UK. Example: http://www.amazon.com/Loctite-38652-Temperature-Bearing-Bottle/dp/B00070LQWE
  5. I only have a very large Air Ministry colour sectional poster for the Browning .303 in. gun, Mk11. Not what you are after It is Air Diagram 1224 sheet 2 of 2 and dated May 1943. As it is sectional very little of the outside is shown. Approx size is 4ft x 3ft.
  6. At the West Sussex Armed Forces weekend event in Worthing, West Sussex we had a lovely display of ex-military vehicles. Amongst them was a Humber Pig on display alongside the prototype Ocelot from Ricardo UK Ltd. The prototype Ocelot is the very first prototype (PP0) for the vehicle that has just has just entered service as the Foxhound patrol vehicle.
  7. Call Arun Fasteners in West Sussex. I use them for all the weird and wonderful threads, sizes and oddities I need for the family collection of vehicles. As they are used heavily by classic car owners they are well used to getting odd requests for obscure stuff. Ford Lane, Ford, Arundel, West Sussex BN18 0DF Tel: 01243 551484
  8. It failed to cure me when I owned both a 101 and a ferret. In fact I got worse and bought a K9 to go with them.
  9. That was in Cyprus. When I first saw this photo a few years ago it carried the caption that the driver slipped on grape juice!
  10. Where about is the severe pitting in relation to the travel on the piston? If it is below the compression rings then you will not lose compression. The corrosion looks high enough to avoid the scraper ring as well.
  11. Lovely looking Land Rover. So it came from Cranwell, and will now live at Sandhurst? Any plans for it to end up in Dartmouth?
  12. Welcome. Selling my K9 is something that I still regret doing. Yours looks excellent and I always did prefer the look of the early bonnet without the extra vents. Merlin
  13. Not all of the manufacturers of the WD jerry cans were based in the UK, and even those there were 'based' in the UK may have had manufacturing plants outside of the UK. The company you are looking for may have been making these cans in any British Territory such as Canada, India, New Zealand, Australia, Aden etc. Particularly in war time it is fun to see where some British companies had operations. Rio Tinto for instance was a London based mining company that operated Zinc mines in Spain.
  14. Unfortunately I did not make it Newbury, but I did make it to the Shoreham Airport aerojumble where I managed to get my hands on a very cheap and nearly new Megger BH224 complete with all paperwork, guarantees and calibration papers. Now I just have to print off Clives work on the 24 volt system and I can use it
  15. I do not like the Pigs as I much preferred the truck they were based on. Plus I brushed against an up-armoured pig at a disposal yard years ago and the armoured plate fell off the door. I have always been extremely wary of the way the armour plates were added to the uparmoured pigs and have a concern in my mind that someone will lose a bit of armour on a road with disastrous consequences. My brother-in-laws uparmoured pig has some of the plates removed for that reason. We went over it with a large hammer and lots of plates had fractured welds. Little plates covering hinges were the favourite with two falling off easily when tapped with a club hammer.
  16. The Sankey is of 'Unknown registration'? Trailers would have been issued with the military Equipment Registration Mark (ERM) or numberplate to civies. They would have had a log book with the MoD. Records for the trailer would almost certainly be recorded to some extent on the Merlin System. Therefor the Defense Procurement Agency should be able to give him details on official paper for the German Authorities? Ask him to look for/ at the chassis plate on the trailer chassis as this should have the ERM on it.
  17. I do not like Pigs, but know the difference. Wayne's is a Mk2 and my brother-in-laws is not, but is commonly called a Mk2.
  18. Rover 11 as it is 1968. I will be heading back there soon as it is only 3 miles away and the owner was very keen once he saw mine. I mention 'another' found as it is just ¼ mile from my friends Rover 11 FFR which has just been rebuilt pending MoT in a weeks time. He originally thought his was S3 due to it having the S3 horrid plastic dash.
  19. Not technically spotted so much as got found by! Another 1968 2a FFR in Lancing near to where the Balltree pub used to reside. Apparently having mine there field stripped was inspiration for the owner to approach me and help kick him into restoring his!

  21. I see that you are in West Sussex, so quite close to me. I used to run Larkspur in my Ferret through an I Box so no radios used. My brother can probably help with the clansman set up as he collects that stuff. I am more into the Larkspur kit. There should be an installation manual somewhere for Clansman Radios in Ferrets? There is certainly one for Larkspur.
  22. I will not type the expletives I found myslef uttering when I saw that. Thanks for posting and I am off to up my life insurance now...
  23. Earlier today I spoke to my father about the ½ ton we restored many years ago. He mentioned that the tub mountings for the later ¾ ton trailers are different in the centre line of the trailer. The angled brackets should sit against the cross strutts apparently, but the ¾ ton tub has the brackets closer to the front/ rear edge leaving a sizeable gap. I no longer have the trailer so cannot get photos to explain what I am rambling on about, but perhaps someone else is able to? The angle brackets on the underside of the tub are the ones with the round hole that the J-bolts hook into. The ones along the sides matched on mine.
  24. Knowing the work that Chris put into that Land Rover you should have no problems for some time. Welcome back to the bug.
