big chris Posted April 28, 2009 Posted April 28, 2009 Hi just thought i would start my own thread with pictures and mods that i have done i think owning a scammell means the work never stops SCAMMELL AS IT STARTED OUT WITH ME Quote
big chris Posted April 28, 2009 Author Posted April 28, 2009 After the first show the work began new engine leland 690 and mounts were sorted then i was lucky to find a jib, all be it from a pioneer this was grafted on also the belly winch was seized so was stripped and all cleaned up so it now actually does something Quote
big chris Posted April 28, 2009 Author Posted April 28, 2009 new front brake hoses and spiral gaurd was fitted to the front and a lot of air leaks were sorted including tanks welded up which now means its sits very well at 12bar Quote
big chris Posted April 28, 2009 Author Posted April 28, 2009 i have now got hold of a second hand windscreen for the explorer this was local and i got it for free (even better) so i decided to pull out the old paneling and see if the old screen could be fitted back in i was surprised how bad the fit looked compared to what i had pulled out but after checking in the garage i looked at the other 2 explorers and they were a no better fit than mine so it was bolted in and sealed up Quote
big chris Posted April 28, 2009 Author Posted April 28, 2009 bought a reme badge for the scammell so it has to be on the grill got it from e bay Quote
Simon Daymond Posted April 28, 2009 Posted April 28, 2009 good old Ebay, where would our resto projects be without it? Quote
big chris Posted April 28, 2009 Author Posted April 28, 2009 starting to look like an explorer now with rear body re floored and some good second hand t&g boards for the sides almost ready for painting Quote
big chris Posted April 28, 2009 Author Posted April 28, 2009 after a run out at the weekend she got a little hot so i have decided to do a mod to the fan which seems a long way from the radiator with the 690 engine in so i made a lightweight fan extension as i have no rad cowl pic to be added when i fit tomorrow hope you are all not to bored yet!! Quote
big chris Posted April 28, 2009 Author Posted April 28, 2009 anyone with any history on this scammell please come forward i bought it from a roofer in watford but i would like to know more history about it if possible thanks Quote

big chris Posted May 1, 2009 Author Posted May 1, 2009 What specs on 690?its just a 680 power plus wid a turbo (i think) fan mod works a real treat fully on now and actually pulls the hair on yer head when your in front (good job i aint got a wig haha) draws as much air through as a meadows thats all that matters so lets hope thats an end to the cooling problems i have now got hold of a drawbar trailer for the scammell so even more work begins now an shows are upon us removed wooden floor today as its totally rotten on the trailer and im going to shot blast it tomorrow pics tomorrow will be added so stay tuned i thought hobbies were supposed to let you chill out when ? Thanks chris Quote
poppypiesdad Posted May 2, 2009 Posted May 2, 2009 I envy you at being able to just fabricate the needed bit for your fan ,to have a fully kitted workshop must be heaven Jamie Quote
Butch Posted May 2, 2009 Posted May 2, 2009 anyone with any history on this scammell please come forward i bought it from a roofer in watford but i would like to know more history about it if possible thanks Hi Chris i used to know S Gowen a few years back when he owned the explorer, he bought it from a garden in Crays Hill where it had sit for many years with a cracked block, and a few other things wrong with it. He got it going, reskinned the cab and took it to a few shows. I know it used to have a gearbox problem that used to annoy him all the time.He then sold it on.E-mail me if you want to know anything else. Quote
big chris Posted May 3, 2009 Author Posted May 3, 2009 as promised picture of the fan modification some of you may think about the extra weight on the waterpump bearings as its aluminium it weighs nothing at all so as long as i grease the bearing i think it will be ok Quote
big chris Posted May 3, 2009 Author Posted May 3, 2009 rear wheel sets getting low low on tread tyre revival in between jobs at work (dont tell the boss) Quote
big chris Posted May 3, 2009 Author Posted May 3, 2009 knackered today trailer blasted it takes alot longer than you think to remove rust/scale (thanks geez) 1st coat of primer went on same day but was too dark to get a good photo when i look tomorrow i will have missed loads i bet better spend today as a wife day kids may want to see me some times when im not working on my ever growing fleet of **** Quote
6 X 6 Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 I think you were very fortunate indeed to find an original windscreen at such a bargain price. Have you had a chance to road test the new fan arrangement rather than just check it's suitability as a a hair dryer ? More pix please when you have the time. Cheers. Quote
stephanedu14 Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 a beautiful vehicle, with its trailer it will be magnifique.c' is to put what at it above? on the photograph of the beginning there is a very in vain blason.quel is l' origin? Quote
big chris Posted May 11, 2009 Author Posted May 11, 2009 road tested over the weekend went very well lets hope good cooling continues as for my french my friend not that good i believe it was worked at a farm as a tractor but not sure location was south england although im trying to find out more history this is proving difficult but we can try the windscreen was frrrreeeeeeeeee the best price im lucky really im among the scammells up here locally there are 4 explorers (3 in my shed all on road i might add) 2 pioneers and 1 constructor within a 20 mile radius all of us help each other as you have to there has been some discussion on oils in the forums anyone looking for a oil or specific grade of oil they req then drop me a post if i can help i will im a distributor for a good oil company that can supply most oils or equivalents available at the right money and carriage can be arranged easily also on my pictures you may notice new hoses i can supply these too with spring guard of different sizes just drop me a line im always happy to help thanks chris Quote
