N.O.S. Posted March 22, 2009 Posted March 22, 2009 Here's a lovely piece of militaria I was given today by a friend - it belonged to her grandfather who worked in a wood yard after WW1. The saw chain with vicious looking teeth unrolls from a leather pouch (with belt loops on back), and with the handles inserted makes a useful little saw. Looks to be unused. A nice touch is the sharpening file and forked anvil. Made by B. Crook & Sons in 1915 and has a W.D. arrow on the saw. If anyone can provide any further information on this item I'd be very interested. Thanks. Quote
woa2 Posted March 22, 2009 Posted March 22, 2009 I've also got one of these, but in a canvas pouch and dated 1945. Quote
Enigma Posted March 22, 2009 Posted March 22, 2009 Ive got 1 in a 1908 pouch, also one from the 50's. Quote
Tony B Posted March 22, 2009 Posted March 22, 2009 Gorgeous!! You have the doctoring tool as well. Seems to have been a piece of kit that has carried on for many years. I've got on, in pouch, but no handles of doctor tool. Quote
snowtracdave Posted March 23, 2009 Posted March 23, 2009 I think the forked anvil may be a very basic saw set - ie a tool with which to adjust the set of the teeth - this increases or decreases the width of the cut . (Too little and the cut will close up after the saw has passed and nip) . Quote
N.O.S. Posted March 23, 2009 Author Posted March 23, 2009 Dave - it has me beat! The 'thin end' looks intended to be knocked into a bit of wood to form a stable anvil, but it doesn't seem easy to then use the 'anvil' to steady or hold the chain for sharpening. Certainly you can put a tooth in one of the slots and tweak the set, but if that is all it is intended for, it is a strange shape. I'll have another go after a beer!! Quote
AndyFowler Posted March 23, 2009 Posted March 23, 2009 Would the adjuster fit in the square hole in the wooden handle mate ? Quote
Tony B Posted March 23, 2009 Posted March 23, 2009 Would the adjuster fit in the square hole in the wooden handle mate ? That make sense, then it would also act as a file guide. Quote
snowtracdave Posted March 23, 2009 Posted March 23, 2009 Would the adjuster fit in the square hole in the wooden handle mate ? Which would provide the required leverage to set the teeth.......if that's what it is for Quote
N.O.S. Posted March 23, 2009 Author Posted March 23, 2009 Would the adjuster fit in the square hole in the wooden handle mate ? Not quite Andy, but whilst checking this I realised that the file does! There must be a workshop or operators manual out there somewhere  Quote
gritineye Posted March 23, 2009 Posted March 23, 2009 I'll try and find mine as well, ain't seen it for years, it might have some instructions inside! Quote
Enigma Posted March 24, 2009 Posted March 24, 2009 Mine was still sealed in its original cardboard box - no manual though... Quote
