Willyslancs Posted January 18, 2009 Posted January 18, 2009 Can these spades be identified please ? One has a bayonet that goes inside the handle, a saw blade ,and no markings. The other one has a removable head that can be swapped for an axe head.......:coffee: Quote

The axe is nice, it looks like the handle on the side turns it into a wirecutter also. Oval hole in the blade is for removing nails. Dont know from which country it's from though. It wouldnt suprise me to find out it may be Swiss! They have turned out some very nice quality Military stuff! Mike Quote
Willyslancs Posted February 18, 2010 Author Posted February 18, 2010 hi mike , my dads been collecting since ww2(mainly german, prussian) he says he not seen one like it before. Quote
Tony B Posted February 18, 2010 Posted February 18, 2010 No dates or manufactuer's marks at al? They may be a 'patent' private purchase item. They do look purpose built rather than scratch built items. Quote
Willyslancs Posted February 18, 2010 Author Posted February 18, 2010 not sure will ask when there next ...... Quote
Tony B Posted February 18, 2010 Posted February 18, 2010 What about SOE equipment? They had a lot of special gizmos built for them. There would be no obvious Made IN>> marks if they were for use behind enemy lines. Quote
steveo578 Posted February 18, 2010 Posted February 18, 2010 I think the "bayonet" is a simple matock spike for breaking ground by putting the blunt end into the spade handle. Quote

cpltomo Posted February 22, 2010 Posted February 22, 2010 Could they be "home made" by the guys who did all the mine tunnels under the german and british trenches in the first/second WW. they had a few nice weapons to protect themselves if they came across someone else from the other side doing the same as them. woa2 Posted February 24, 2010 Posted February 24, 2010 I have been thinking about this item, and I am sure I have seen something like it before. My guess is that it is Not Military and is just an ornament made in the far east for the European Antique market trade. Have you tried the 'Antiques Roadshow' yet? Quote
