simon in a 432
I went there today and I must say there was even more old junk there than usual. The 432's were absolute scrap and the engine and steering bays were full of concrete- does anyone know why the army would do whis? http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v325/RB5SRULE/354.jpg[/img] http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v325/RB5SRULE/352.jpg[/img]

abn deuce
the other reason might be to equal the weight of what was removed so when the hulks were used for recovery practice they would act like real vehicles would ???
ferrettkitt
I had wondered why there wasn't any pictures of the 432's on withams tender list. I had my suspicions that they might be a pile of scrap! Now I know Andy

Tony B
Ouch!! Still with spares so rare for the beasts it would be worth stripping. The 432s may have fallen foul of the Reduction of forces in Europe treaties, the insistence was that armoured vehicles either had to be totally scrapped under witness or rendered unusable. Reduction of Conventional Armed Forces in Europe.

Reduction of Conventional Armed Forces in Europe. In which case it should have a large blue cross painted of the front to signify it must be scrapped. Although I have seen such vehicles in scrapyards later turn up on the show circuit ;-)
Tony B
Yeah but the paperwork is correct. A few years back one oil company bought a couple of dozen T55 engineering tanks for work in Africa. when I asked the purchaser why the reply was, the whole lot cost less than one modern dozer, the locals could operate and maintain them and when finished with they would be gifted to the local government who couldn't buy them as openly military kit. Was surprised to see that the concrete had been placed on top of the engines and gearboxes in the 432s. From what someone had said about replacing the missing weight for recovery training I was expecting the mechanicals to have been removed first. Definitely seems a great waste, there must have been some usable parts ruined there.

sirhc
This is the first tender sale I've missed since 2003 when they started. Anyone got some decent photos of the other AFVs, spares etc? Cheers, Chris
Tony B
The Chinese have been buying anything bigger than a beer can latley. My local supplier just warned me battries are likly to go up by 20% due to them buying lead. :dunno:
snowtracdave
Can any of you experienced purchasers tell me how soon they get in touch to let you know when your bid is successful ? Dave
sirhc
Dave, Sometimes it's the day after the sale, more often it's a couple of days later. If you've not heard by Friday then you probably didn't get it. You can of course phone up and ask if you won anything, they will also be able to tell you what things went for if you ask. snowtracdave
That's one of many things I love about this forum . You ask a question and more often than not you have an answer to your problem in less than five minutes . Thanks Chris .

snowtracdave
What did you bid on? a unimog  And , apparently I got it . Which comes as a small relief as we got a bit carried away & bid on the ZIL too & they didn't say what I'd actually bought when they phoned this morning . Just got to find somebody to get it back to Colchester for me now .

Stormin
Had a look at the Mog myself but didn't bid as it looked like it needed a bit of work to tidy it up. Got plenty of that on with my 101 at the moment. Bid on and won lot 151 instead, a tidy looking bedford MJ. Just got to decide whether or not to down rate it's weight plating or go for my HGV licence. Thinking of downrating it temporarily and then maybe re-plating later when I've got round to the test. Markheliops
Hi all. Popped along to Withams on Saturday with my friend from Germany. SCRAP - SCRAP and more SCRAP. It was somewhat rather chilly as well. In fact - I froze my KP's off. :shake: Was very disappointed with what was on offer. For those of you who can't visualise the condition of the 432's on offer - http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u233/Markheliops/Withams1.jpg[/img] http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u233/Markheliops/Withams3.jpg[/img] http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u233/Markheliops/Withams2.jpg[/img] It does concern me that the Army is so short of funds, recovery aids and range wrecks are finding their way to MOD auctions. Even so - my friend stuck a bid on a tidy TM. Had a look over it and it seemed okay. Noisy clutch bearing but I understand it's the norm. http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u233/Markheliops/TM1.jpg[/img] http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u233/Markheliops/TM2.jpg[/img] I don't think we will get it as we only put in a lowish bid.
