Bob Grundy
On a trip the Kirkcudbright experimental ranges in the late 1990's we discovered this thing. It was substantially made but note the flimsy wheels for such a vehicle. The first photo shows Roy Peet on the left and Neville Anderson on the right. Neville was the 2/ic at the Tank Museum and his father was General Anderson commander of 1st Army In the second photo I can only identify David Herbert in the centre. Any ideas what the item is ? earlymb
My guess is just a range target made to look like a tank in general, not an actual vehicle?
wally dugan
it seems that a great deal of effort went in to this so may be a mock up for a future prototype armoured vehicle ?
David Herbert
The gun was a real 6pdr bored out to a non standard caliber. The wheels were Cromwell/Centaur wheels and hubs. At the time we couldn't work it out but there was a debate a few years ago (but I can't remember where - sorry!) in which I was persuaded that it was a mock up made for air drop trials. I doubt that it was air dropped into the location shown or it would have buried itself. Obviously it has been shot at too. David
