Tony B
As the person walking beside it appears female. Does make you wonder what the purpose of the kit was.
dgrev
No Balkenkreuz or weapons, so post-WW2? The photo is well known. I think it is one of a number showing similar scenes. I cannot recall the details, but it was German units fleeing the Russian advance and taking their families back with them. I am guessing that the units fell back through their home towns or last posting in order to collect their families and get to the US/Brit/French zones. If not that, then opportunistic gypsies? Regards Doug

Hair Bear
'Opportunistic gypsies' would have weighed in the half track an bought a Transit.
