Enigma Posted August 30, 2013 Posted August 30, 2013 Recently we lost 2 WW2 veterans/friends. -Curtis Gadd, 513 PIR, 17th Airborne. We met him in the Ardennes for the Dead Mans Ridge walk, spend time several days and what a character. He told us many storys and tought us some slang like Fartsack (sleeping bag). We went to the sites of the 17th AB jump over the Rhine. When time came to say goodbye het got emotioal and teared up. Well, I can tell you most of us got misty. -Tom Kelley, 53rd Welsh Div, Ox and Bucks amongst other divs. He also had Glider training and still had his red beret. We met him at the liberation celebration in the city of Den Bosch. A very friendly man who had a lot of luck in the war. He had a wooden bullit shatter on his belt, a shrapnell fragment bend his cuff button and a few shrapnell fragments hit him without wounding him. After the war he also served in Palestine He showed us his WW2 memorabilia including the brass button which was bent by shrapnell. Through email he sent me his memoires in seperate installments so his story isn't lost. We will miss them both. Quote
Enigma Posted August 31, 2013 Author Posted August 31, 2013 Thanks guys. Although it was to be expected considering their age its still a loss. At least we let them know their hardships weren't for nothing. Love your freedom? Thank a liberator. Quote
