Hair Bear
In the 'Ferret re-engine' thread there's a pic of an engine with the head off. Now correct me if I'm wrong, but I only see one valve. How does that work, and is there a reason for this design? Thanks, Rob.
oily
It's the design of the engine, - there are 2 valves per cylinder, overhead inlet valve is in head, side valve exhaust is in the block, at the side of the engine, hence it's name... It also helps explain why the B series are so quiet running when compared to normal overhead valve design engines....
Hair Bear
Sorry, missed something somewhere - hence the name? I've worked on side valves and overhead valves even sleeve valves and wankel but this is the first time I've ever seen an engine laid out this way, is there a specific reason? I'm guessing it's a fairly common arrangement in heavier military applications but why? It appears to be an overly complicated way of doing something fairly simple. How does it make the engine quieter? You've got me hooked now!:-) Rob.
