My Hats-off to you guys undertaking this project - It is a major, major project indeed are certainly not for the faint hearted!

I think my Dukw was chassie number 6331 from memory and the highlight of my Dukw restoration and ownership was meeting up with Bart Vanderveen (editor of Wheels & Tracks and many other MV books) in about the Spring of 1998 and taking him for a ride through Savernake Forest in the vehicle one a lovely sunny afternoon.

Bart absolutley loved it and said that it was one of those experiences which highlighted the benefits and enjoyment of being involved in the preserved MV movement. Sadly within the next year Bart had unexpectedly passed away.

Rex Ward in Reading is undoubtedly your best source of nearly every spare part you will need. Rex worked on Dukw's when he was in the British Army in the 1960's and his knowledge on type is simply second to none. He has sourced many hard to find items world-wide and if he can't get them, then they can't be had. He's also a nice guy to deal with as well and is honest and true to his word. (I have had countless dealings with him over the years)

If it were me doing the project, I think I would buy a donor GMC 353 for all interchangeable power train and drive train parts, inc, axles, props, motor, gearbox etc. It would a much cheaper route in the long-run, especially if you could get hold of a late production ex-norwegian truck with low miles, with all parts like new!

Look forward to seeing your restoration photographs as they proceed.

Alan,

You are a very very brave man to be taking on a project of these proportions! Its a really nice story getting it basically for free, but by christ does it need serious work!

I really take my hat off to you restoring this, and hopefully it should be a great beast when finished!

Rex really is the man for DUKW's and Jimmys, and he helped me out a lot when I was having problems with my GMC motor and head.

Good Luck!

Regards,

Mick.

Hi Alan,

I think what you have there is a CCW - the CCKW's little brother. It's one of around 23,500 built with a non-driving front axle for road-going use. They were used on long-haul supply routes in the ETO such as the Red Ball Express. It's probably quite a rare beast. All were 353s with hard cabs.

Mechanically, it doesn't have a low range, but there must still be a transfer box to power both rear axles. Other than that, they're supposed to be the same. (Info. from Boniface/Jeudy/Crismon)

Nice find

Hi Alan, looks like you've got not one, but two, rarities there. Yours is one of the best discovery/recovery stories I've heard in a while. Please keep posting snaps and snippets of info. Brilliant stuff, and what the forum is here for. Good luck.

here are some pictures of the exhaust manifold before and after along with the starter and some random parts around the workbench. as you can see the manifold had a pretty big piece missing and the other valve broken off, which we got welded on by a friend of ours.
