What is the purpose of this feature? I see pictures of quads with a plate in this location, and others that have nothing at all in this area, and I am mystified as to its use...

these brackets were used for holding down the firing platform or spare tire (there is discussion about which). Most beetle back gun tractors lost their rear body in civilian service, and when then restored people dont have anything to measure from and therefore it doesnt get fitted.

I went off a few different pictures ( some of CMP's etc) and some common sense. There is a long bolt and wing nut there for holding the spare wheel on. The recess is so that the bolt can be stored out of the way when moving the wheel.

Hear are some pictures that were sent to me (I can't remember who, so many people have helped me I cant keep track of them all now) of one from a CMP Quad. It's a bit shorter than the morris one because the CMP has a steeper angle on the back.

Ah, so that also answers my other question of how the spare wheel was held on. So if I have got it right there is long bolt, that can fold down, and the wheel retaining plate fits in those clips when the spare wheel is not in place? Presumably there is enough room to tweak the wing nut tight to stop the retaining plate from jumping out of the clips when driving without the spare wheel in place.

When we see the work you are doing it is hard to appreciate how much research you are doing in the background! :)

An unbelievable amount of research, pictures, drawings and dimensions. In some cases you just have to try it and see. :nut:

My one worked out a bit longer than yours.
