Hi All

 

Its the nephews prom (didn't know we do that over here) and he wanted to arrive in the sarry. Not holding out much hope I took her out of hibernation (started right up in a second) and took her up to the local garage. Actually didn't get that far, only got three miles.

 

She was driving really really nicely and I was thinking this is good! Then smoke started coming up from in front of me. I know the exhaust manifold needs a repair but as she heated up this got alot worse. I've got the cover off the fluid flywheel housing at the mo. because I think I have a slow leak here. Anyway, after stopping for a few minutes to check on the smoke she started but ran roughly, just up the road smoke was really bad so stopped and then she wouldn't start at all, just turned over. One hour later I drove her home running okay to start with then bad towards the end.

 

Conclusions.

1... when shes good shes great.

2... the exhaust needs doing and this added to smoke

3... fluid flywheel needs a pressure test and smoke is leaked oil maybe built up over the winter vapourising in the heat.

4... getting a bad case of vapour lock in the fuel pipe. when stopped the petrol in the pipe got even hotter. I see that the fuel pipe does rise to the top of the engine then dip slightly into the carb.

5... seems to be getting hot very quickly (left foot cooked) but the temp goes up to 180 and no higher (I replaced the sender unit last year)

 

Any comments saraceniers?

Wow... reminds me of how mine operated just before I completely replaced the drive-train and modernized it. Best of luck finding the problem.

 

I can tell you my mechanic said the worst thing for any vehicle is to not be used. Perhaps you could get lucky and find that it is a worn thermostat causing your temps to get too high and cause/contribute to the other problems.

Had lots of fuel lock problems with the original fuel taps when they were stood for a long time. Not linked the the smoke or heat.

A leaking flywheel seal will produce a vapour not unlike smoke. I was at an airshow once and the Saracen next to me started up and was emitting this whitish "smoke", when all of a sudden the fire crash tender arrived and was all for extinguishing it. The owner was unaware of the cause, until I pointed out that it was in gear with the handbrake on and the flywheel oil was overheating blowing past the seal.
