Hair Bear
My late Uncle always said there was one piece of ww2 kit he always looked out for at sales but never saw one. It is/was apparently a small suitcase that contained a type of steam boiler, generator and radio transmitter for use by spies and resistance. The idea being it was taken into a wooded area, the boiler was fired using twigs and moss ect. the steam ran the generator and powered the Tx. I can only imagine a 'Mamod' style unit but it'd be interesting to know if anything like it did exist and was used?
Tony B
Yes the device was one of the funnies developed by SOE. Here you go fill your boots! http://home.ca.inter.net/~hagelin/WWIIClandestine.html

Rather better than "Mamod", and there were a few different models produced for "spook" use. http://www.royalsignals.org.uk/photos/steam.htm The Duxford Radio Society have got one of these, I believe, and have actually fired it up (if you'll excuse the pun). woa2
I saw one of these at an Autojumble about 30 years ago and didn't realise what it was until later. Always regretted not buying it. I did hear that they were also used by Coast Watchers in the Pacific to charge Radio Batteries. Anyone confirm this?
REME 245
I enquired about the Preston Services Generators some year ago and was quoted a very high price. No doubt why they still have them.
Hair Bear
Thanks for that, now it's been mentioned I do vaguely recall him saying something about Stuart-Turner. All very interesting stuff.
