ianperrior
Ok here goes. I want to replace the tyres on my Matador. I have been offered bar grip tyres in 12 ply rating, 14 ply rating and 20 ply rating. Can I use 12ply on a matador, or will they be too wimpy?:nut:
0 gritineye
I'm using 12 plies on my Explorer, they have enough spare capacity for the way I use it and give a much better ride, best to check the load rating on the tyre side an work it out. 0 rbrtcrowther
just fitted 12 plys on my explorer too. not driven it far yet but when i removed an old 20 ply i let the air out before removing the wheel and i could have driven round on it. Not even any bulging at the bottom:shocked:
0 Sean N
If they're modern tyres they may also have a load index which will give you a guide. I don't have a load rating for 14.00 x 20 12 PR but the load rating in the VOSA table I have for 11.00 x 20 12 PR (the biggest 12 PR tyres listed) is 5350 kg per axle on single wheels, and generally speaking for a given ply rating the load index increases with increasing tyre size, so I'd have thought 14.00 x 20 should be fine unless you're using the truck (heavily) laden. If I remember right (again not on my list) 14.00 x 20 20 PR rate about 10 tonnes per axle.
0 Big ray
When we were breaking ex-military trucks in the 1950s no one wanted the tyres, you could not give them away, only the likes of farmers would use them on trailers, the ply rating was far too low for general highway use.:kissoncheek:
