Data Card

Rangie

Question

Well, I am gradually amassing a wide range of info on the Ambulance!!

Latest nugget of information comes in the form of a copy of the B-Vehicle data card, courtesy of the helpful chaps at Deepcut Barracks.

As usual, a vast array of acronyms abound! Having worked in the Nuc Industry all my life I'm used to a staggering variance of technical terms/abbreviations, but some of these take the biscuit!!

74 - CVD Hilton (?)

79 - HQ E Division (easy one!)

79 - 1 RRF - No ADP Action (?)

79 - 3 RAVP CV HQ RCT (?????)

80 - OSU Thetford (Ordinance Supply Unit perhaps?)

88 - TMP Thetford (UIN name change I think)

96 - TMP Longmoor

98 - TMP Thatcham

98 - Demobbed through MVS

Looking at this info, it seems to have had a pretty sedentary life shunted between Transport Motor Pools (which I pretty much expected)

Can anyone shed light on the more bizarre abbreviations?

Alec

Just going over old ground on the data card again, a couple more quereys.

There is a unit code A9971A, or A9971H possibly, the last letter looks like an A though, the two letters look similar in script. (?)

Vehicle ARN RU562A (?)

It was listed as class 1 from 74 to 81, then class 2 from 81 to 84. Was this downgrading as the vehicle got older? No mention of the period 84 to de-mobbing.

Lastly, when I was rubbing down and prepping paint, I kept a continuous lookout for markings and numbers. However, due to its sedentry life, I wasn't all that hopeful.

The only markings I could find (and I kept), were white-painted number 8's, within a white-outlined box, painted on the background of the red-crosses on the rear doors and near-side body. About a 5" square box.

The only mention of operational use I could see was 1 RRF, Royal Regiment of Fusiliers or Rapid Reaction Force.

If the 8 unit number means Infantry Battalion, this seems to tie in.

However, from what I have read, 8 could also mean 23rd Artillery Group 5 HQ

Can anyone shed a bit more light on this? I may be reading too much into it!!! :D

You should make an enquiry with the Royal Logistics Corps Museum, their address:

RLC Museum

Princess Royal Barracks

Deepcut

Camberley

Surrey

GU16 6RW

Tel: 01252 833371

There was a nominal charge for having the service done, cannot remember how much now but well worth it.

Give them a ring and they'll let you know how much info they need.

I'm sure I just sent make, model, chassis number and mil reg number.

Happy enquiries! :-D

might they hold info on explorers ?and how do i go about contacting them ?

Very unlikely, they had no info on my Explorer. There are big gaps in time periods for which they have record cards. Unless the Explorer was shed very late I doubt they will have a record card for it. The trouble is the search fee (which I think it is £20) is non refundable if they don't have a card or any info for your Explorer. It may be worth a try, you never know. Let us know how you get on....

They hold all records against Military registration. The search will be done against the military registration, this is all they need. They cannot work from Chassis number, make, model build date etc,

Thanks DMC, very useful!

It's all piecing together nicely now.......

Any idea of the other acronyms?

I feel a dummys-guide to data cards coming up, so much information hidden behind so few abbreviations :-D

3 RAVP HQ RCT TA

Assuming UIN for above is A0823B ,then whilst I can't determine what 3 RAVP stands for

HQ RCT TA is Head Quarters Royal Corps of Transport Territorial Army this UIN was active 20 January 1983 to 05 April 1993.

The address of HQ RCT TA (UIN:A0823A) was :-

Prince William of Gloucester Barracks

Grantham

Lincolnshire

NG31 7TJ

Now HQ Royal Logistics Corps TA

I served with 161 Ambulance Regiment (V) 1988 to 1991 based at Prince William of Gloucester Barracks driving Land Rover ambulances of various vintages.

Thanks for the info! Very much appreciated.

I don't have the UIN for that period, all I have is:

3 RAVP CV HQ RCT from 02/05/1979 to 17/01/1980

Another snippet I spotted was from 1978 when it was at HQ E District, is the annotation: POO786, I wonder if this was the motor pool it was in.........

Right, been doing some digging, the nearest I can work it out to mean is:

3RAVP CV HQ RCT

3 Battery Royal Artillery Vehicle Pool, Central Vehicle Headquarters, Royal Corps of Transport.

Does this sound plausible? Anyone know where 3 Bty RA were stationed in 1980, I cant seem to find any reference to their timeline on the web? :nut:

Bl**dy acronyms.

Having been the victim of MoD acronyms, I know how confusing it can be.

There can be one acronym having one or more meanings!

Have found this; CV HQRA (Central Volunteer HQ Royal Artillery)

May contribute to the final answer.

Having looked further this may be a red herring.
