The Steering wheel should be painted black, as should the gear change knob. The hand brake and the fwd/rev lever should be silver. Nothing inside was painted red unless some bored squaddie or previous owner painted it. I bought batteries which fitted snugly in the boxes and have never had a problem with them moving about, but you could cut some bits of wood to fill up the gaps if using smaller batteries.

From experience using wood is good. Any kind of foam or like material is just a welcome sign for mice to turn your Ferret into a home.

It is a persistent problem for us here with the storage of any vehicle unless it is in a vermin proof building taht is heated.

Also don't neglect the up and down movement of the battery, arcing terminals as they slap against th top of the box is a real downer on their lifespan and your health and safety.

The only time we have drilled a new hole on any vehicle was to fit a master battery off switch which has been worth its weight in gold.
