Marmite!!
Is there no respect left :argh::argh: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/8420053.stm The infamous Arbeit Macht Frei sign at the entrance to the Auschwitz Nazi death camp in Poland has been stolen. The wide metal sign was unscrewed and pulled down from its position above the gate overnight. Police are searching for the culprits. It is the first time the sign, made by Polish prisoners, has been stolen since it was erected in 1940. Edited December 18, 2009 by Marmite!! ArtistsRifles
Purely a personal observation - but I reckon that whoever stole it ought to be introduced to the camps primary purpose when it was running. B*gg*rs would never steal again!!!! :argh: :argh:

Tony B
Why? What the hell can they do with it? Melt it down for scrap?
Chrisg
********** cant post what I want to say it'll be removed
Bodge Deep
Probably stolen to order. I'd imagine there are easier chunks of scrap to remove from that site without ladders and grinders... I'd say it's high profile is the reason it was nicked, although who'd want that on their wall is beyond me... I hope they get it back. I always thought that that the slogan was a sick joke to be honest given the eventual purpose of the place, perhaps thats how it was intended! fesm_ndt
It is near on akin to grave robbing :argh: I went there in '94 and the Lonely Planet guide book said don't go there alone (they are very correct and I am not what would be called a softy)

LoggyDriver
Is there nothing safe anymore. It's been there all those years and then someone decides to nick it. As mentioned, who the hell would want that on their wall, it's probably cursed. Edited July 26, 2011 by Marmite!!

Marmite!!
Police in Poland find sign stolen from Auschwitz gate http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/8423827.stm The "Arbeit macht frei" sign stolen from Auschwitz in southern Poland has been found in the north and five men have been arrested, police say. They said the metal sign from the main gate, which symbolises for many the atrocities of Nazi Germany, had been cut into three pieces. A major search was launched after the sign was stolen before dawn on Friday. Its theft, the motive for which was not being reported, caused outrage in Israel and among Polish politicians. Five men in their 20s or 30s were detained and were being taken to Krakow for questioning, a police spokeswoman said.
