The infamous Arbeit Macht Frei sign at the entrance to the Auschwitz Nazi death camp in Poland has been stolen. The wide metal sign was unscrewed and pulled down from its position above the gate overnight. Police are searching for the culprits.

It is the first time the sign, made by Polish prisoners, has been stolen since it was erected in 1940.

Probably stolen to order. I'd imagine there are easier chunks of scrap to remove from that site without ladders and grinders... I'd say it's high profile is the reason it was nicked, although who'd want that on their wall is beyond me...

I hope they get it back.

I always thought that that the slogan was a sick joke to be honest given the eventual purpose of the place, perhaps thats how it was intended!

Police in Poland find sign stolen from Auschwitz gate

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/8423827.stm

The "Arbeit macht frei" sign stolen from Auschwitz in southern Poland has been found in the north and five men have been arrested, police say. They said the metal sign from the main gate, which symbolises for many the atrocities of Nazi Germany, had been cut into three pieces.

A major search was launched after the sign was stolen before dawn on Friday.

Its theft, the motive for which was not being reported, caused outrage in Israel and among Polish politicians.

Five men in their 20s or 30s were detained and were being taken to Krakow for questioning, a police spokeswoman said.
