  1. Have you ever owned a V8 2 stroke Detroit, they sound amazing but drink fuel like there was no tomorrow? Witham are now offering a choice of suitable trailers: http://www.mod-sales.com/direct/vehicle/home/78383/All_Terrain_Heavy_Duty_Oshkosh.htm
  2. Hi Nick, what is the reg, I can soon tell you if it is David's old one? The Rolls 305 has a cold start button on the pump but my old S26 was not the best of starters either, it would smoke like mad and take a while to fire on all 6 cylinders. The others at Witham were all the same.
  3. Hi Chris, If you manage to organise a HMVF visit to Coningsby I would be very interested, my father in law was Station Commander there many years ago.
  4. 'the chassis on this HD (Heavy Duty) is said to be eight times stronger than standard' Someone got rather carried away there.....
  5. I assumed you meant working civilian recoveries based on the Martian, you are correct about the twin boom gear. L W Vass did indeed offer conversions, somewhere there is a scan of an original advert of theirs with some good pictures. It also included an offer on Dyson 32 wheel trailers, IIRC £2000 each or 3 for £5000.
  6. At Funtley near Fareham. Looks like a day's work for six men not 7 days for fifty men:shocked:
  7. Buckdale's one at Bedford is still in use, based on the gun tractor: https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=jsu213&biw=1600&bih=752&tbm=isch&imgil=RHt9Gu8lZwCwRM%253A%253BD2-woHk7UzaUwM%253Bhttp%25253A%25252F%25252Fpicssr.com%25252Ftags%25252Fjsu213&source=iu&pf=m&fir=RHt9Gu8lZwCwRM%253A%252CD2-woHk7UzaUwM%252C_&usg=__92_36rzPan2kKGHnuCAVhBXP2II%3D&ved=0ahUKEwjj9o24nKzLAhXJuhQKHTqhB50QyjcILg&ei=GTjcVqOGIMn1UrrCnugJ#imgrc=RHt9Gu8lZwCwRM%3A
  8. I agree, in 1st low the reduction was 190:1 and providing you had the grip it would pull just about anything.
  9. CMG are the local recovery people in my area and I know them quite well. The Kenworth with a 70 ton rotator is Mark Cowan's usual vehicle and attends most major LGV incidents. The last time I saw the Foden it was being barred back to MK by a Volvo recovery.
  10. I'm still struggling to get the clip to run, do I need an ap or whatever they call themselves?
  11. Correct, FTX Logistics (Fasttrax) have a 20 year contract worth £290m to supply and operate the HETs. They have circa 90 1070F tractors and King trailers operating from a base at Bulford Barracks.
  12. Mileages are from 500 upwards apparently and some will have been through a mid life full overhaul regardless. They will be US stock not UK as they have the 500bhp Detroit 2 stroke engines.
  13. Witham have 55 Oshkosh M1070 HET tractors, some with nominal mileage. http://www.mod-sales.com/direct/vehicle/home/78307/Oshkosh_M1070_.htm
  14. My memory of RLs is smashing your elbow on the back of the cab when changing from 1st to 2nd.....
  15. Thanks for the clarification Roland, that is what we all suspected, had the Millie been a genuine artillery tractor it would have been worth more as they are now quite rare. When they were cast years ago most were converted into recovery vehicles by the likes of Vass at Ampthill. What happened to 'Roadhaus', you put a lot of work into that to get it as you wanted?
  16. Gun tractors are swb, can be 6x6 or 6x4 and have wooden rear bodies and different rear wheel arches, this one looks like a GS 10 ton cargo.
  17. Hi Roland, do I read the price on the advert correctly, 88.8k Euros or £68k?
  18. There is nothing clever about the pipe other than its ability not to collapse when subject to a vacuum. Vacuum advance was commonly used pre ECM days to give slightly more advance under light throttle use which would give better economy and driveability, as soon as the throttle is fully opened the manifold vacuum drops and the spark timing reverts to the standard setting controlled by the bob weights.
  19. I just spotted the RE Scammell tractor in your barn, do you know its military reg?
  20. Slightly off topic but that reminds me of an incident recalled by an RSM friend of mine who was stationed in Germany during the 70s. A column of tanks were crossing an autobahn while the police held up the traffic when a Merc full of bank robbers on the run from Stuttgart failed to stop and supposedly hit a tank doing circa 100mph. The impact was so great it shifted the tank 5 feet sideways (a 2 ton car @ 100mph has the same energy as a 50 ton tank @ 20mph) and the car was completely destroyed but a windscreen wiper flew off and went straight through the tank driver's cheek injuring him quite badly.
  21. I just looked up the numbers made :wow:: Winter Weiss 1827 Rogers 1148 Fruehauf 1623 Checker Cab 344 Pointer Williamette 1192
  22. Rob, some more Googling reveals that Epinamel was (is?) an excellent coating for tanks holding potable water, could it be the tanker had multiple uses?

  24. Thanks for posting that Steve, I had never seen the mk2 LHS. Out of interest was that a recent photo from the Scammell Register newsletter, I don't remember seeing it?
  25. Good cod, I've never seen a carp in a plaice like that....
