  1. Thanks guys. Being a total novice I thought free hosting was a posability but it seems every domain wants circa £5 to £8 pm when it says free on the advert!
  2. I'm looking to create a website for a local history project, which will be fairly simple in that I want to post text and photos, and nothing as complex as HMVF! Which FREE provider do members recommend?
  3. Since when has a German BMW R75 motorbike and side car been worth around double the value of an LVT 4? Bidding fever seems to be infectious!
  4. Any joy on the engine hood yet, to cover up that beautiful looking engine?
  5. Excellent work - I'm looking forward to seeing it at a show some time soon. Which area will it kept; hopefully UK for starters and somewhere within reach of Beltring!
  6. Bernard De Smet If the Hillman was built in 1938 for the RAF, it would certainly have been gloss RAF blue, but then most likely repainted in camouflage colours in Wartime. BTW - If you ever strip the engine I'd be interested to see photos of the cam driven push rod drive for the fuel pump, as I was working on a Hillman Tilly with a friend who had a problem with the push rod as it seems the end had worn near the cam shaft, so there was no back and forward movement on the rod to work the fuel pump. We had to fit an electric one rather than strip the engine. If its the cam shaft that's worn a new push rod won't work.
  7. Is there any way that the bonnets of your vehicles can be professionally 'hammered' back to the correct shape - with the bill sent to the shot blaster?
  8. We are all no doubt familiar with the British CWGC, but what is the US equivalent, as I'd like to search for details of US Army and Air Corps (USAAF) killed in WW2. Everytime I search I get details for UK so any links would be of great help Larry
  9. Why not just hand them to people next time you go to an MV show?
  10. KR J Seeing as Ian Young (ex editor of MMI) is now Windscreen Editor and there are around 6 issues a year then perhaps its time to re-join the MVT, especially as I'm in the process of writing a few more articles for it.
  11. I just can't understand how anyone would want to run a business like that shot blaster, or let someone handle a forklift in such a way!
  12. Land Rover magazines are good at churning articles as the subjects in hand always appear current to newer owners but with such a wide variety of MVs in the hobby CMV could only get away with churning when talking about Jeeps! The other problem for CMV is that articles have to be brief, so if it did an Anthony Tucker-Jones article on German armour on the Eastern Front by the time a few words and photos are included on Panzer I they'd have to get on and describe King Tigers within a few paragraphs otherwise the article would take up too much space, and in any case we probably know most of what is to be written. So perhaps they could do some articles on the personal experiences of people who used MVs.
  13. Sadly for the foot soldiers of the 6th RWK every photo I have found shows them ...er on foot! I guess if they added up all the miles they would have found they had marched much of the length of Italy in nearly 2 years of the campaign.
  14. Chris is right - on both counts about the Brigades that left! So 1st RWK in 4th Div would have had 62 on a Green Square As for 78th Div and the 6th RWK in Italy a quick re-appraisal agrees with Chris that 36th Brigade was second in seniority which means a green square. But every reference I have suggests 6th RWK were the senior Bn in the Brigade (and not the 5th Buffs) so that means 60 on a green square not 61. Mad as it seems, in 1980 I was so interested in the Italian Campaign that I bought circa 220 photos from IWM which I still have so I'll find one of either the 6th RWK or the 5th Buffs to see which number is correct.
  15. I agree a Zenith 36IV is fine and in my experience certainly not henous, unless you buy a Chinese built one, with a float that doesn't like petrol and breaks up after a few miles! Best to get a refurb of an original marked with Zenith British Made 36IV, on one side and correct me if I'm wrong the number 27 on the casing where the fixing bolts go through.
  16. What is a SCAM 12, as when I do a web search I get lots to do with Nigeria!:cool2:
  17. Seeing as you can buy a decent book or two at military shows for a few quid, Id rather not buy CMV for £4.40 or more
  18. Ian, In case I missed it do you know the year that the Standard UV Tilly 12hp you are restoring at the moment was built?
  19. Firstly the 1st Bn RWK in the 4th Division; my records state they were the third (Junior) Battalion (Bn) in 12th Infantry Brigade, and the 12th Infantry Brigade was the third Brigade in seniority in the 4th Division when in Italy. So in addition to the 4th Div red circle sign the 1st Bn RWK would have for example their Carriers marked with a White 69 on a Brown square. 6th Bn RWK was the Senior Bn in the 36th Infantry Brigade (which was also by chance the third Brigade in seniority in the 78th Div). So that means a 6th Bn RWK Carrier would carry in addition to the Battleaxe Div sign a White 67 on a Brown square. This is according to 15th Army Group instructions from July 1943 and a quick check shows this is the same number and colour combination as for British Infantry Divisions in NW Europe on D-Day. Obviously in each Division there were many other Corps & Supporting units with their own arm of service markings, and some of these such as Signals or REME may have worked closely with each RWK Bn. As you can imagine working out seniority can be a bit of a nightmare especially as Bns came and went! I hope this helps Larry
  20. Article by Doug Trench, Defence Editor - no doubt in association with 'Phil Space' who fills up the website around 1st April each year! For me it was the comment that he was amazed Norwich City won a trophy that showed it was fake , as no one in Norfolk cares either - so its unlikely a Luftwaffe airman would!
  21. Out of interest what colour and brand of paint did you use for your restoration? Is it a good match for what was under the old voltage regulator and presumably a Khaki G3 colour? G3 came before the SCC.2 Brown you found on the Steering box.
  22. Avoid buying any builders brickwork sealant like Thompsons Water Seal Clear, as it is effectively watered down PVA glue. They changed the recipy some years ago to water based and now it's nothing like the older type of Water Seal which was good for canvas and said so on the can.
  23. I seem to remember that there is a firm that can make brake shoes. Do you have anything of the originals left to be restored? No doubt you have searched the Tilly Register http://www.tillyregister.com/ and Maple Leaf Up http://www.mapleleafup.net/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=5
  24. Presumably someone must have known the deceased, as with that numbers of MVs they would have an active member of our hobby?
  25. Well I wonder what the protection from drones will be; more drones escorting our Nuclear Subs, like a whole under water fleet!
