  1. I'm planning to come across from Ireland for this with 101, trailer and a 9x9. Will probably hang around for 2 or 3 days somewhere after and ferry back Thursday to go to Duncannon Fort event on way home (bank holiday is week later in Ireland)
  2. Most members of the MMVG have suffered from Rapier Rash at some point when setting up launchers. You get an amazing amount of blood from a scalp wound :-o
  3. Go and download yourself a brochure :-D http://www.jcb.co.uk/defence/resources/highmobilitybrochure.pdf
  4. Doubt it, that 6x6 is a refurbished Perentie with the current Puma engine. The current fleet (pre wolf) looks like it's going to be refurbished, there were an example of a good as new refurb from Hobsons and a similar but not so comprehensive job from ABRO at the same show. It's the latter that will happen. I'd very suprised if Land Rover ever supply the MOD in large numbers again. The new MAN fleet are good looking trucks, shame there's not much British about them. At least the army is being provided with some decent transport.
  5. Saw it in the slightly more highbrow Sunday Times!
  6. I used to build a lot of models, was heavily in to 1:16 scale trucks at one point. Only thing I have now is a 1/16 Tamiya RC Tiger 1. Keep drooling over Mark 1 Tanks 1/6 Challenger 2 but at nearly 3 grand with all the trimmings it's probably not going to happen. A 1/12 RC Cat D8 with rope blade by CCM in steel and brass may happen though. Another side line is railways and live steam narrow gauge in 16mm is a project next year in the garden. Could even keep it military as you can get WD pattern wagons and a WD Baldwin tank engine these days.
  7. Just thought I'd add a genuine military bulldozer to the thread as featured in my email printed in MMI a couple of months ago  Ex British army Vickers VR180
  8. It's all a total waste of time! :dunno: Just walked past telly on way to PC and the Lotto quiz for Sun readers was on (wasn't watching, honest :schocked:) A guy who I reckoned was in his mid to late twenties, didn't particularly look like a Neanderthal, was asked when did WW2 start, even given 3 choices. 1933, 1939 and 1945. He said 1933! FFS, what the hell is the UK coming to when twats like that don't even know the basics. I was taught everything in History from primary onwards, Romans, 1066 etc; remember O level being a lot of C18/19 stuff. Don't actually recall being taught WW2 etc but you sort of knew it anyway (Most of my teachers were involved in it plus Commando comics have a lot to answer for!) That my maths teacher was a Cmdr Phillips RN(ret) but never talked about it sort of sticks in my mind.
  9. It was actually used as an underground factory by Plessey I think. There is a very good book on 'secret' underground London that covers the subject well. There was also a planned extension of the Northern line from Edgware to Elstree, partly built and the depot at Aldenham used for aircraft production during the war. All since demolished.
  10. I must have surveyed the drains at that station a dozen or more times and never noticed the plaque or whether parts of the station looked newer. I knew about the disaster, but was always desperate to get the job done and get back to bed . During the war a number of deep shelters were built beneath the Northern Line and Central Line with the idea of linking them as an express tube after. Not many were actually used for the purpose and most of them are now used for secure document storage, I've been in the one under Clapham North.
  11. I may be able to drag myself back from Ireland for this and go straight back to Duncannon Fort the following weekend. I love it when a plan comes together (well maybe with the wind in the right direction and runes cast well!)
  12. I remember the series, but not the name. Recruit got very confused when reprimanded for not saluting the quarterdeck! Was on around the same time as 'Get Some In'?
  13. Oh, so you were TooTall Mike! :-D, should have clicked, what with HMVF shirt as well  Enjoyed the show, admired Karls DPV, drank far too much and spent very little despite large wedge in pocket! Also eat very well thanks a cook trailer installed in the mess tent with very good chefs! Definitely down on numbers, as for reasons, don't know but some opinions were bandied about; don't know enough background to repeat them here.
  14. Happened to someone I know a while back, he was reported by the electricity meter reader. When he opened the cupboard, a load of dummy rounds fell out. The old bill turned over his house and industrial unit, keeping him locked in cells in the meantime. All sorted eventually with valid de-ac certs etc. He heard off another tenant of the yard that the armed response unit were seen posing for pictures on his Ferret :police: Glad you're OK Paul but it goes to show you can't be too careful these days, even in the privacy of your room!! :schocked:
  15. I'm not in CMV but in MMI for being sadly knowledgeable about bulldozers
  16. I tried to tow start a mates Cavalier late one night. Didn't want to be there, it was cold and raining; at least that's my excuse for what I connected the tow rope to  What I thought was a solid crossmember was the radiator support whose spot welds failed when he let the clutch out and then the radiator dropped.
  17. You'll regret not having that pen to hand! The records from Beverley are now held by the RLC at Deepcut and they will do a search for you for a non-refundable £25. Do a search, address should be on here somewhere.
  18. The aquaseal stuff is a last resort to see you through another season, in the long run it makes the canvas dry and brittle, at least that was what it did with my first 101 canvas. If you've got to the stage of having to treat a canvas, maybe it's time to put pennies in the pot for a new one.
  19. Great pics Lee. Saw a battery in action at Army 2002 live firing (MLRS was there but not firing, shame :schocked:) along with a load of other stuff, Challengers were louder though :-D
  20. I use a Mitac Mio with built in reciever, been very good. The latest model, the 268 just won PC Pro best buy. You can buy it from various places with different software bundles. Tomtom software is about the nicest but as it uses TeleAtlas mapping it's no good to me in Ireland. No matter what system you buy, the mapping is supplied by either Navteq or TeleAtlas, only Navteq have mapped Ireland fully. When buying a unit check how old the mapping is, some dealers sell old units cheap and could be over 2 years out of date (updating can be expensive). Avoid CoPilot 6 software, used to be the best but the mapping is old and the new version is already 8 months late. The horror stories you read of people getting stuck in narrow lanes are usually down to users selecting shortest route instead of fastest and blindly following what they're told. For some good advice, the best speed camera database and links, look at http://www.pocketgps.co.uk
  21. UK branch of ACMOC is best bet. There a lot of D8s in preservation inc some pretty old ones inc this one seen below at a demo in Thaxted in 2003. Best add Classic Plant and Machinery to your magazine list :-D
  22. Le Tourneau is a fascinating company specialising in diesel electrical driven heavy machinery. Built the Sno-train for US military back in the 50/60s as well as all sorts of strange machines for runway and jungle clearance in Vietnam. Still build the worlds largest loading shovels.
  23. There are books on Tournanet but their forum is out at the mo. You could also try the HCEA but their website is down as well! Also worth a punt on ACMOC forum Classic plant and machinery is another one of my weaknesses
  24. http://www.c-u-v.co.uk/index.asp are the main importers of s/h ones, don't mention spares though. Some parts here Exmod
