  1. If anyone wants to read about Rapiers in the Falklands find a copy of Cloudpuncher by Tony McNally
  2. It's sandwiched between the swivel fairlead and the bumper, it's usually a plain rectangle of steel, never seen the version in the catalogue actually on a vehicle.
  3. Yes it would have had the Union Flag. Don't worry about the originality, been discussed to death on the 101 forum as well! There's a few very original ones around for posterity (00AM95 is fully equiped as a Rapier FUT) so do what you like with it.
  4. I can only find one picture in service and it doesn't have a roundel, AFAIK none of them did. They will have had a plate on the front with a unit designation (it's covered in Clive's painting guide) Picture of 00AM95 at Berkeley Castle in 2002 showing the plate (and roundel it shouldn't have)
  5. Not been here for a while but followed your posts on the 101 forum. Those XZLs are the only tyres worth putting on the original rims, any XCLs will be at least 12 years old, bar slicks are lethal and Petlas are agricultural. My XCLs have loads of tread but the sidewalls are cracking. Craddocks are supposed to be making new wider rims which will greatly increase the tyre choice. The Rapier tractors are probably the best GS 101s you can get plus as you've found, the club has all the records for the RAF ones. I remember that dealer demo day Tony, great fun trying to dig the ruts deeper with the 101 to try and stop the Freelanders (unsuccessfully!). Always had plenty of passengers for rides round the off road course. Most of us live with the rumble, some have gone to the extent of rolling axles or double carden UJs but you never get rid of it. Only change worth making is a GKN 2015 front prop. Of course if you load it with 4 missiles, all the associated kit and hook a Blindfire trailer on the back it goes away as the load compresses the springs and decreases the prop angles.
  6. Not winning on european delivery though, received my March issue last week 10 days after the April issue, they get sent via Switzerland. Spoke to them a few days ago when renewing my subscription, I'm not the only one complaining. I subscribe to 7 magazines (we pay 21% VAT on them in Ireland so it's cheaper to subscribe) and they arrive 2 days to 7 weeks after issue mostly via France, Germany, Sweden and Switzerland in plain wrappers, fortunately the postman knows my interests!
  7. There's discrete ways of adding cameras but the more discrete, the poorer the picture. Got a mini dome CMOS camera on my 110 and it isn't great and v poor in the dark, no IR but probably fine to check you're not backing over a kid at a show. A standard CCD bracket camera is probably the cheapest quality camera and isn't as obtrusive as you think on a smaller vehicle, obviously not talking historic or jeep sized here. They pale into insignificance beside the plethora of armoured cameras fitted to Trojans and Titans though!
  8. I got reversing cameras for my 110 and brother in laws 130 from the father, very helpfull and very good service. Got touchscreen rear view mirrors and different cameras on to suit each vehicle. The website gives a very overview of what's available, I specified cameras with waterproof connectors, very important even in a hardtop Land Rover! http://www.reversingcamerasuk.com
  9. Probably need a pretty fast broadband connection or save it for later. It's being shown initially on Sky Movies rather than Sky 1 from Easter apparantly so subscription needed if you don't want to hop around download sites before they are removed!
  10. Here's Preston's one in the Museum of Ireland in Collins (Royal) Barracks Dublin Landverk L60 in same museum (not a great picture)
  11. Yea, seen both those sites, ACCO also built the worlds largest grader. There's some fantastic machinary models out there now, radio contol models of Alberta Oils Sands RB and PH mining shovels are under development for around $10,000!! I was sort of tempted by a CCM D8 but can't justify it. I'm almost as much a sucker for classic plant as post war military kit but never owned any; was on site from a young age with my father, couldn't do it these days! Visited Threlkeld in 08 for a VET working weekend and have been to an SE Davies event in Thaxted in the past. Interesting link Mike, suspect Porsche and LeTourneau would have got on well only RG thought much bigger! I assume he would have known about Porsche's work.
  12. An ex-member of our group had a Stonefield, did quite a few shows up to the mid 90s, got no photo's unfortunately. He got it as a rolling chassis with no engine or gearbox and dropped in a Perkins 6.354 and an LT95 box out of a Rangie with air operated tbox. He couldn't understand why it kept blowing centre diffs until he checked the diff ratios. Turned out they are different front and rear and the original New Process transfer box was torque apportioning, cured by fitting 101 axles! It was right mongrel of a machine in the end. Think he still has but he now uses a Unimog. Can remember the v early 4wd mags reviewing it in the early 80s (along with other stillborn 4wd ideas!) and in the bad snow in 1987 Kent police and ambulance sevices had 6 wheelers on loan. Went past the assembly plant in Strrod a few times when the Malaysian order was being built.
  13. It was featured in CMV a while back and the article by Pat Ware was repeated in Classic Plant and Machinery a couple of months ago. RG LeTourneau was quite an inovator when it came to diesel electric drive and even prefered electric rack and pinion drive to hydraulic rams. Although mainly an earthmover manufacturer he build a lot of military equipment including some strange stuff in the Vietnam war. There's a whole host of books about his machines and LeTourneau still build the worlds largest loading shovels (260t/2300hp monsters though with RG gone they now use hydraulic rams). Ooops seem to have gone on a bit about my second favourite subject!
  14. Same with 101s, reg is from order date. They wern't allocated in chassis number order either just to confuse matters!
  15. I've seen a couple of series with 200s with no turbo, looks easy to do and you don't have to squeeze in the disco rad and intercooler. I've had a few 2.25 petrols in the past and reckon too they're a lovely engine and it's very cheap and easy to put on electronic ignition. Anyone considering diesel conversions needs too consider the cost, it can buy a lot of fuel especially for a show vehicle. If going diesel, stick to a LR lump, no fannying around with adaptor plates and drilling flywheels. Avoid the TD, go for either the 200 Tdi although parts will be getting hard to find (heads apparantly) or 300Tdi, lots of v rusty 300Tdi discos around. Someone's even put a Td5 (best diesel LR ever built) in a series.
  16. Is Sean Curtis (Protacman) a member here, he'd know for sure? The Irish Defence Forces had the only RHD ones (16 in total) and they ocaisionally come up for sale for 5k or more. Pretty economical on the Perkins 6.354 but noisy cruising at 45 -50, max is 55. You can get 3 across the front but on many you can only use one door because of the way the spare is hung. The driving position is more cramped that a 101, the steering wheel is huge! The canvas cab isn't exactly made for a european climate either. No idea what the towing weight is, like many military vehicles they look far bigger than their apparant carrying capacity (2.5t), they have air brakes though. The Irish army bought them instead of 101s to tow the 105mm light gun but they were not liked. They did make effective gun trucks in Somalia though, the IMVG have one preserved in this role.
  17. I'm like a rash over several Land Rover forums plus many others! Main ones are 101 Club, EMLRA, LRA, LRUK, LR4x4, Plain Military, PocketGPS, IMVG, 5 different Boards.ie forums, half a dozen railway ones (mostly Irish), livinghistory.ie, Ancestry.co.uk, Facebook Favourites list include just about every Land Rover parts place, numerous machine tool suppliers, electronics places that deliver here, weather web sites etc etc Really should think about getting a life!!
  18. Looks like I may be around for that weekend, back in UK working for 3 weeks. Just need to cadge a Land Rover and some gear!

    Coast

Couple of pics taken from the Dart Line ferry last time we went to Belgium.
  20. Just remembered, Duxford in 88 or 89? Everyone camped at a local pub the previous night and had a damn good session. Had a big convoy run the following morning with motorcycle outriders. No-one could leave until the Hippo blocking everyone in moved off, must have been 30 or so MVs there.
  21. I missed that Carver Barracks event, mates tell me it was brilliant. The guy in the jeep cap in the first scorpion photo was Bob, a fellow acccidental founder of the MMVG, no longer on the MV scene. Been to so many good shows, all the trips to BOAR in Belgium were good. Ardingly and other steam fairs have been fun (always have the best beer tents!) MVT at Berkeley Castle in 02 sticks out in my memory. Bunker Bash of course. Southsea Common shows in late 80s. These days it seems to be the smaller non commercial enthusiast led shows where you are thanked for turning up that are the best. The Irish scene is growing but one of the best was a local village vintage rally last year, just recall Father Ted and the Fair Day episode, wouldn't be far off!
  22. First time I've heard of the spider (don't know the part no off hand, don't think Microcat lists it) built in to every Land Rover biting it's owner. Mine usually just pops out from behind the sun visor, looks at where we are going and disappears again.
  23. You certainly have a motor that's pretty rare these days. Can I suggest you also look at the EMLRA forum as well, tons of expertise there on earlier Land Rovers. If you do a search, you should find the contact details for Deepcut, worth a ring first as the £25 search fee is non-refundable if they don't have the record card. As you have the military reg and it's fairly old, there's a very good chance they'll have it. Under the old pre 1984 registration system, yours got a 1974 reg as that's the year it was sold in to the civvy market. That's a generous offer from ferret, bite his hand off!
  24. Don't bid late on a Saturday night after too much Aussie Shiraz, it's amazing what you end up with! An Engel expedition fridge that holds at least 48 beer cans was my finest (or stupidest) buy to date. Pretty strict on parts and the like I know the value of though and never get carried away on them. Seen stuff go for silly money that is cheaper even at a main dealer. As a seller though I love it when a bidding war breaks out, sold some Land Rover Experience door stickers a while back for over £60 to a guy in Portugal, expected to get a tenner for them.
