  1. Forgot about the Unimog route but it's not a route I wan't to take. Probably cheapest though with huge stocks of Continental tyres in this size lying around. The spacer may be needed as the rim barely clears the track rod ends. Certainly don't want bar slicks although someone may find that pointer of use. Incidentally, the usual bar grips come in British and Greek varieties and have slightly different diameters and stickyness (or lack of it). Handling on them is too iffy for my liking for a vehicle that will do over 70 and gets regular use :shake:
  2. I am after a set. I have hardly worn Continentals on at the moment but they are all cracking due to age. Been doing a fair amount of seaching recently. Neither Withams or Vass have any at the moment. Graham Holding did have some 255/100R16 (metric equivalent) XZLs recently. Other than buying brand new Michelins, the only other source I have found is http://www.aircrafttyres.com/900r16__255_100r16%20michelin%20XZL.htm who have both secondhand in various patterns and new remould XZLs at about £175 each Craddocks are advertising 315/85R16s which are same diameter but you have to buy new wider rims they are advertising. I have seen 255/85R16 fitted but they are slightly smaller diameter.
  3. Depends what sort of day to day running, OK for pottering around lanes but a pain on long runs. Will cruise all day at 50 ish, anything over is painful but may just reach 70. Being ex MOD it will not have power steering either. White smoke is a bit of a worry, could be coolant related. These engines are easy to fix though. Don't know what you are paying but ex MOD land rovers hold a premium, you can usually pick up an early civvy 200Tdi for the same money. Irrelevant of course if you are after the military look. Book weight is 1519kg
  4. Hi Rob The current military tyre is the Goodyear G90 which is knobbly and should howl nicely but may not look right on the 127, XCLs can still be had secondhand. Other choice if you shop around are 235/85R16 Mud Terrains by BF Goodrich or others. Look here for whats about http://www.4x4tyres.co.uk/tyres.html http://www.bronco4x4.com/ Don't need a speedo in the 101, just listen to the howl of my Continentals overlaid by the burble of the V8 8-)
  5. There is our website Medway Military Vehicle Group www.mmvg.net
  6. If you look on ebay in Land Rover spares or military spares there are usually several military battery isolators with leads attached. One end has a battery terminal for the negative post and the other a post which fits in the connector on the end of the existing negative lead. The leads are about 18" long so plenty of scope to put the isolator where you like with no connectons to crimp up. Price is about £7 - 10 plus postage.
  7. Looks like the sort of trailer the local electricity board use to use years ago.
  8. I used to have one of those tents. Suprisingly roomy but only for one person. Lined in black as wel.
  9. This is always an interesting debate, there was an ongoing one on the emlra forum which stayed friendly and amusing. What the public and show organisers want to see can come into as well, we put on a huge and probably unrealistic display at some shows and the kids, parents and vets love it (hats off to the proper re-enactors who show and live the part as well though). We have a couple of items that never existed that have caught some people out. The box that goes on our TM to carry all our kit is a BT van body in a steel frame painted green with a dummy NSN number and various stencils. Enthusiasts have come up and asked where we got the comms body from. We are always honest about its origin! Each to their own and it's their property to do with as they wish as long as they are honest about it, just don't expect to put it on our display if it's bright orange There is an new sticky thread on the emlra forum though called "When does a Walter become a Ringer" for people to post when they see dishonest ads on ebay and the like. The "Walter" bit refers to the turning of an ordinary 90/110 into a Wolf lookalike. BTW, my 101 has totally non original comfy seats in it!!
  10. Nothing like scaring the shiny car mob with a bit of armour!!! We won best club stand at a car show in Penshurst a few years back, took the Fox we had into the very small show arena to the consternation of the classic car owners. Our prize - a couple of gallons of Mer polish
  11. They all look decidedly shifty. Kept sidling up to us all weekend inviting us to come to their bunker  Nice pics, was a very good weekend. See you in May at said bunker.
  12. You need a copy of Bob Morrisson's Land Rovers in the Gulf if you can find one. My copy is packed up for house move so can't help. There were a couple of other publications that came out at the time that featured a lot of British vehicle but again my copies are packed away.
  13. We all drive in convoy including a trip to Belgium annually, the CVR(W) Fox included before it was sold. The owner of that now has a Sabre but had to pay another heap of cash for a 24t beavertail Volvo with 9t hiab crane to carry it (may be available for hire when he's got it serviced and passed his HGV!). Not looking forward to the track bashing later this year, he has a new set to go on the Sabre.
  14. Ainscough crane hire have one, their first crane. http://www.ainscough.co.uk/about.htm
  15. I had one of these elctronic ignitions that kept the points on my lightweight back in the 80s with the 3 position switch, useful imobilser. Also made it very easy to set the timing using the LED. Landrover owners can now get a canadian developed electronic distributor for 4 cyl engines for £64, advertised in most of the mags
  16. I'll send them to you if you pm me your email address. I downloaded them but can't remember where from.
  17. Don't think the regs are retro-respective so they are ok as they are.
  18. Look here for some good painting advice. http://www.stephen.hull.btinternet.co.uk/index.html I used to have a link to a canadian guy who painted marine equipment in abysmal conditions and got good results but I've lost it.
  19. Our lot are strictly military tentage, anyone who turns up with civvy are encouraged to acquire a 9x9 quickly or arson may ensue! We do have spare tentage (a 12x 12 christened Guest House Paradiso) for new members who need to get started. We always put up a mess tent made up of 3 12 x 12s end to end, with the sides rolled up on the end one. Needs teamwork though! If anyone has a 12 x 12, it is possible to erect or pack them without unlacing the corners, we have 2 permanantly laced together as part of the mess tent which saves a lot of faffing around.

    Spraying.

First time I did my 101 was with roller. Works fine with matt/satin finishes as they cover a multitude of sins. Gloss can be done this way. I used small radiator paint rollers.Spraying will give best job but if you are just tarting up for the season, rollers is better than brushing although you will still need brushes for finishing edges. Look at this a this very good site for some painting good advice http://www.stephen.hull.btinternet.co.uk/index.html
  21. Bit of a contradiction to my interest in British military vehicles and history is an interest in Irish history and Irish military history (including huge pecentage that have served in British army). Most of family now living there and intending to go myself in next year or so (taking 101 with me). Absolutely nothing to do with military is also an interest in Irish narrow gauge railways (well you can't be too narrow minded in your interests!)
  22. It's the infra red switch that must never be touched, causes all the lighting circuits to self destruct. Will quite often do it anyway even you don't touch it, invariably on a dark wet night in the middle of nowhere.
  23. Amen to that, very moving program. Shock to realise there are only four left now. Used to live next to an old boy who I ran errands for. As a teenager I thought it was a pain having to shop for him and listen to him, he was such a fussy old sod!. He was a Gallipoli veteren and still had all his diaries. He showed me officers mess menus he wrote for Christmas and loads of other stuff. It is one of my eternal regrets I took no interest at the time; and he was responsible for me getting my first job. He died about 18 years ago. We owe these people so much.
  24. There are a definitely a couple of foibles about the Zenith including a spare drilling that should bo sealed, can't remember which one though. Nothing wrong with Weber carbs in general, just not the best in this application. Alright if it gets you out of trouble and you only pootle round the shows. Richard - sounds like you have no problems at all. Topless motoring is brill, only tried screen down once though. Big mistake without goggles, had glasses on but they vibrated badly over 40! Soft top is also way to go, had no security worries so far and is so much quieter and no condensation. Engine noise used to be really bad with truck cab. Wind noise can get a bit tiresome with canvas slapping over 50mph on a long run though.
  25. If you can get a decent Zenith, stick with that, they can be got new for near enough the same as a Weber. The Weber runs lean and strangles what little top end there is, it has a smaller dia venturi. I also has problems with fuel vaporisation in hot weather and going offroad when I had one on a lightweight (was somewhat modded though in my off road days, have now repented and am strictly original military!). The main reason Webers can be described as an economy carb is that anything is better than a knackered Zenith. Zenith does tend to have one major failing in that the top cover can warp causing airleaks. For opinions on either do a search on any of the main Land Rover forums
