  1. Don't agree. Caen was a substantial city even then. The green fields look too close and I don't think the perspective is right for this to be a view from the castle side of the city. Can't see a barracks anywhere. There don't appear to be any waterways. It is a photorecce pic; but beyond that I can't say. I expect I'll be wrong. Come on Dorset, do your worst. M
  2. He's an interesting bloke. Doesn't suffer fools I don't think; but is a very good speaker if you can get to one of his talks. Good review Tony. I'm really looking forward to getting this book. Ta, MB
  3. I can just imagine you in your Casey Jones outfit, Jack. Either that or as one of the taffs on Ivor the Engine. There's lovely.
  4. I gather there are other forums for that sort of thing...:coffee:
  5. Assfart has been superceded by Oldfart.
  6. We just need to put this blip behind us and get normal service resumed. It goes to show how much work Jack and Joris do to keep the forum running. It is a terrible shame we lost so much stuff, but we can rebuild in short order. Good to have you back, MB
  7. Glad you found us again. Things are getting back to normal...more good stuff to come. MB
  8. Good to have you back. We're slowly getting all the gang back up and running. I spoke to Jack on the tellingbone today and he seemed chipper. Silly sod thought I was going to buy a tent. MB
  9. Welcome to the bright and breezy world of HMVF. Enjoy. Once things settle down again after our Apollo 13 moment ("Dorset, we have a problem"), you will see how brilliant things are round here.
  10. Deeply disappointing for everyone. But we are all mates here and we'll get the thing back to being better not just as good as it was in short order. There are things which I, as chief Luddite, haven't sussed out yet; and there are things which are obviously missing which will reappear in good time. We can afford to be patient. What has happened to the other forums is a tragedy and I hope they recover. I think the best thing we can all do is trawl through our emails and PMs and find ways to contact everyone we know to get them back on line. Keep your old name, just accept the new password to start with and then change it to your chosen one. I am still Snapper. Which reminds me, I found a boxed Polaroid Swinger II camera (my first ever camera) in my loft today as well as bits of my old train set....some good things have happened....Move on up.. MB
  11. If I've got an MV, I'll hopefully be there....MB
  12. Glad to see the sense of humour button has been installed. Well done, friends. I chose the perfect days to go down with a head splitting migraine. It's like being in 28 Days Later but without the zombies. I'm still learning how to navigate, but you cannot fault the presentation. It looks superb. Nothing to do with me. I was in Dungeness eating fish and chips. MB Alive and kicking...
  13. Brilliant service. Thanks Bodge...you learn something every day in this place. MB
  14. I 've always liked the Westland Whirlwind and am sure we'd all agree that with proper engine development it could have been a real killer. Shame it never made it. I agree with Steve about things looking the part, but do have time for aesthetics. The Jug is a beast compared to the P51. The Ju 88 does have something very special about it and I'd like to have seen one of those tankbuster Henschels there used to be a Frog/Revell model of - was it the Hs 129??? My ultimate remains the Stuka. Can't explain why - but seeing the one on show at Hendon always makes me smile. MB
  15. He just seems like an unassuming bloke you'd ignore in the street. Not a mouthy flash git like the MHAS founder. Mantrucker could be rhyming slang, Jack me boy. Ho Ho. I'll never forget that afternoon with Maurice. It was kind of surreal, with you lot, Chicago George and so many other people there. A classic to treasure. Keep going, Clive - I'll need another fix soon. 2009 would be good because I'll be fifty that year and need a birthday treat. Mean time I'm off for some running repairs. MB
  16. brilliant stuff - what a find. I would think your roll of wallpaper is a national treasure in itself and should be stored somewhere very carefully. I agree with Tony, you need to see unit diaries and so on and will need to visit the PRO or consult the NAM to do this. I've never done it - but meaning to do so in 2008. The medal is really interesting, what a piece of treasure. I'm glad it is in good hands. Tony may agree, you ,might consider joining the Great War Forum and using the many brains on it. I'm signed up but rarely go into it because I spend my time here.
  17. Damn! My battlefields colleague was only up there last Saturday. The monument stands above Chatham, not in the town. Mark, I hope you behaved yourself.
  18. All true. Someone will want it. They are lovely trucks and there are not so many around. It would always be nice to see one of the plain grey official motors used by the civil authorities in war time - the demolition units etc. Don't think this model was used in any front line WD capacity, but there will be some role for it.
  19. Listings has been discussed by the mods team, as Joris has said; but it would have to be a team effort and should encompass Tv, film, talks, exhibs and shows - anything of use to us as a group. I suppose exhibs in the UK are of little use to the likes of abndeuce - but there is a lot we can do to share info. I like the idea of expanding the battlefields and history thing, because I am not a spanner man by any means and know my supposed strengths. All crtiticism of my reviews and waffle welcome. MB
  20. Will do - my emails has been doing stupid things and I've missed some emails, but my wife got them in her account. There's a BT man in Bangalore who has a contract out on him. I'll do my best to sort this for you. But fear not, I've got a list of people who I've promised snaps and will get through them all eventually.
  21. Hey Stuart, Good to have you on here. I haven't seen a reply from you about your truck pic in CMV. Did Jean-Luc get it to you - or do you still need me to get off my crippled derrier? cheers, Mark B
  22. Superb. He has a simple CWGC grave stone. Good on him. He was a soldier.
  23. Congratulations to you both, Joris. Tell the Mrs to finish the Sodoku books while she can. I'd tell you to have your favourite beer, but I've forgotten the name of it again. It begins with A and ends with a hangover. Nuff said. Make the most of the peace and quiet. 16 years later and our house is still flippin' noisy.
