  5. I do not count Freelander's as Land Rovers. A Disco is, well was half way there. Range Rovers have long past there original roots so wust be totally discounted. There is only one real Land Land Rover. and they have not really changed that much, be it Series or Defender or whatever. Cannot understand how somebody raves about the Series 2/"a and slates the Series 3. After all they were not exactly much different. I like my Series 3, but then I prefer the looks of a Series truck to the later ones. Something to do with the srt back radiator. I prefer LWB to SWB, again a personal thing Yes you need to maintain them, as you do all cars. Some people seem to forget this with modern cars. The best this is I can fix it with simple tools and a set of hammers. The only computer needed is for ordering parts, when required. None of this taking it to the garage to be told it with cost £50 to plug the computer in before we even tell you what is wrong, assuming the computer knows (been there done that) upon which the answer is to throw expensive parts at it in the hope it cures the problem. Real Land Rovers were built for a purpose, which does not involve shopping, and they did it. My father used to use one on a farm to spray, harrow and other stuff. A lot of people seem to slate them because they are comparing them to a modern car of newer design. Ask them to bring there modern car back in 20-30 years. Your Land Rover will be there but there car will be long gone. Mike
  6. Interesting one. My only experience of wearing a uniform was 4-5 years in the ATC. But we were taught to wear it correctly and respectfully. When out at shows I do not wear any a uniform, I am more into the mechanical things. I would however wear one if the occasion dictated, but would want to wear it with some form of correctness such that I was respecting those who actually wore one in anger. I would however draw the line at rank, unit badges and most definitely medals. These are things I feel are only appropriate it you served and earned them. However I also feel there are occasions when the wearing of these could be deemed appropriate such as re-enactments where the wearing could be deemed to serves a purpose. In reality if worn in an appropriate manner and context it should not be an issue. If however it is to deceive or gain personally I believe it is wrong. Back to the gentleman in question, he may not fully understand the implications of what he is doing and why it might offend. We do not know the circumstances behind him having the uniform, insignia and medal. They may well have belonged to a family member and he thinks he is doing them an honor by wearing it. Alternatively he might just need educating, as he does not really know the full story. Maybe he thinks it is cool and that he does not look like a wally. (my opinion) Mike

  8. There is a rather simple answer to that. gleaned from listening to the commentary. There was a lot of "brought to your courtesy of So and So" They also get money from businesses that want there name plastered across the website an in the official program. Many will be local as you say it drags the punters in big time so all benefit in someway Of course there are the benefits of having it coincide with Shoreham. Did Bournemouth Saturday and Shoreham Sunday in 2008. It also has the added benefit of RN Ships and a Marine beach invasion There was only one disappointment this year. Tickets to visit HMS York were sold out by the time I got there. Oh well maybe next year. Mike

  10. The line up changed on a daily basis. The Venom only appeared on the program on Saturday (had the iPhone app) Which Spit was with the BBMF on the Friday as I saw them come in around 6.15 and I am convinced it had changed on Saturday. Are we sure the Sea Vixen was out on a paperwork issue alone.   12. The BBMF were parked up at Bournemouth. They did their forming up out the IoW way nefore running in. The Vulcan ran in the same way. Both were also displaying at Shoreham so would have had to head off that way. On the Sunday the weather stopped the Ming walkers getting there and the parachute team, so the BBMF came out a bit earlier, so probably had some time to kill before Shoreham. Mike

  14. Jack Where you been? Its a 4 day event that has run annually since 2008. I can well believe it brought that much in, Saturday was absolutely heaving between the 2 piers. Mike

  17. For those who like things helicoptor we got The Army Lynx. - Watching that thing pull loops and back flips is something else. The Navy's Blackcats Lynx display team - Some close formation flying there. And The RAF brought along a Chinook - might be big but it can pull some moves. Mike

  20. Yes I know it was an Air Festival so I suppose we better get airborne.Part of the display included a re-enactment of the rescue of a downed pilot. Saturday was OK but weather made a change to Sunday's programme This featured a brave parachutist who had to get wet. The Catalina would come along to get him but was driven off by a fighter enter one faux 108 pano Buchon) which got seen off by a Spitfire IX (MH434) and a P51 Mustang (Ferocious Frankie) who then put on a close formation display. Of course whilst this is all going on the parachutist is picked up by HSL 102. Mike
  21. Spend the weekend down at the Air Festival this year. Arrived Friday and had a beer outside to the sound and sight of a Spitfire, what more can one want. It was not just in the air there was a Royal Navy presence with HMS York, RFA Mounts Bay and HMS Severn anchored offshore. The beach also got "stormed" by the Marines. Yes Saturday was a nice warm sunny day, but Sunday started with fine rain and remained overcast. might not be good for people but a great help for aircraft photography on the South coast. I know how much you lot love pictures so here are a few. HMS York loos completely different as the sun was serring. Mike

  23. I believe I mentioned before that this would be unenforceable legislation. OOPS probably means we will get it then. When is a new part not or a modification. Example: A 1982 Lotus Esprit rear light cluster (in the 80s) from Lotus was £200 yet you could get the exact same part from Rover for £30. Which is genuine which is a modification. For record the difference is the Lotus had the SD1 clusters but mounted upside down on the opposite side. Cost may not always be an issue, back in the 80s my brother needed a new distributor for a Rover V8 cost from Rover wad about £110 pounds and it was made by Lucas. Surprisingly from Lucas it was £180. He replaced it with one from an independant supplier for £35, guess what it was made by Lucas. But which is it a modification? You better be careful as I am sure Tesco petrol is not standard and could therefore be deemed a modification. Worse still they could deem parts from 3rd parties are acceptable, god help us Land Rover owners as they are bound to approve a certain supplier. Mike
  24. Many thanks for that. Northern France would up the chances of it happening, especially if in the areas with the annual "iron harvest" of WW1 ordanance. I do hope nobody was hurt. It just goes to show that regardless of time, it can still come back and bite you. I work for a civil and structural engineering consultancy and we recently had a client say why do I need a UXO/UXB assessment (cost money) as the war was years ago. There are areas that are vacant since and even if built on is no guarantee. That bit of UXO had obviously survived landing, being dug up (possibly even built over) and only made its existance known when somebody tried to turn it into hardcore. Mike
