1. A cab was found along with the props and a few other bits I needed and put them on. This was not a fantastic cab but certainly better than the one I had. It looked as though it had been started on for a complete rebuild having had a lot of new parts fitted passenger seat heater boxes door shells clutch slave etc all have manufacturer’s labels on. The down side was the gauges and most of the dash was missing and one windscreen was broken. Anyway we put this cab on and we had enough bits to start her up again try her out and confirm that the truck had the bulk of what it needed e.g. enough gears high and low range a clutch that worked. A road test was out of the question as up to now it only has front brakes and one of these has a sticking cross shaft but I am a little more confident we can make a good working truck out of her. Next came the bit I was dreading most did the back end work. I fitted the two relief valves that where missing put 30 gallons of oil. Then started her up and engaged the PTO releasing the clutch oil spurt out all over. Fortunately this was only a loose return pipe to the tank but it proved the pump was putting pressure out. Second attempt I looked for leaks and all seemed ok so gingerly I pulled a handle at random after an age the O/s leg went down so I pushed it and sure enough after stuttering a bit it came back up. Slowly I worked all the levers and with the exception of the fold on the bottom boom and a bad oil leak on extend in and out bottom boom.
2. Like i said if they are any good to anyone there here
3. A blog on my latest project Eoden EKA Recovery. When I first got vehicle it was in a bit of a sorry state. The cab had been left open to the elements. It was full of the finest sand I have ever seen up to six inch deep in places. The sand had penetrated into all the switches and controls and had seized them all solid to the point were the hand brake control and diff lock levers snapped of trying to free them. The cab was also smashed up at the bottom corners at both sides so it was decided the cab had to go. When the cab was removed it was still a sorry state underneath. It revealed some very crude armour under the mudguards all though drilled and bolted to the chassis it had bits of steel brackets literally welded to the front bumper so this was all removed don’t know what the armour was made of but it was a sod to burn. Underneath this I found some very crude heavy cables spliced into the main battery leads with connecters that would not have looked out of place in a power station. Two of this leads went to a box in the cab with boiling vessel wrote on them (still have the box and leads if any good to anyone is it some sort of inverter???). Other big leads simple ended up with large connecters on them taped over with old fashioned sticky insulation tape. What they did I don’t know but what ever I ripped the whole lot out. It took half a day cutting tie wraps and uncoiling spira wrap just to get back to what looked like standard Foden loom. Next I turned my attention to the back mud wings these where bent and twisted beyond repair so out with the gas axe and these along with the lockers where taken of the lockers were saved but the mud guards, light brackets went in the scrap bin. At last was in a position to have a look round and try and see just what I had bought. What stood out was it had been cannibalised of some very important parts Front prop shaft PTO prop two rear spring pots clutch slave hydraulic relief valves gear change cables. This meant apart from starting the engine there was very little I could do to try and see exactly what I had bought. So while killing time waiting for parts I decided to try and clean it up a bit what a job this turned out to be. That sand what was in the cab was lodged up to a foot thick in the chassis rails and every nook and cranny. Steam cleaning it turned the sand to the stickiest most horrible clay stuff you can imagine that simply splattered and smeared every where up to now I have spent about 20 hours trying to wash the stuff away. The wash bay ending up like a yellow skating ring with the stuff.
4. been past to day on a job sure seemed to be a lot there already. Never been but might have a ride over this weekend seeing as how i have missed Pickering and Driffield
5. Seems good advise to me great believer in in not stressing components more than you have to do
6. To be fair when i bought the truck it didnt look as bad as it does now. it had been robbed of various bits and pieces eg props rear spring pots clutch slave. the cab was u/s been open to the elements and was full of sand all controls and switches had siezed to the piont were they snapped when trying to use. rear wings where bent beyond repair. So i have stripped of all the bad bits and that is the piont i am at now what remains is actually in very good condition. The engine struck up first crank when starter was shorted out and sounded very good. Have sourced all the parts i need to make good again just hope its got no major problems yet to befound with crane or transmission side. No i havnt got the remotes with it but not two worried i have a supplier who does radio remotes at right money. As i go along with this project i will be trying to make it more useful in civillian life eg the under lift will be independant of the top boom and have longer reach. Also i will be taking every chance i can to remove wieght from up top but i know this is limited.

8. For recymech some of Foden as it stands now. All i know about it is its a runner i dont know if anything else works as yet. Hard times ahead me thinks
9. Quick question were you paying for the storage if so the person taking the money could be held resonsible for any damage or loss over and above normal degregation. if not why were you paying for the facility
10. Hi just got a fresh truck direct from mod agent on the front it says "Freddie" and on the side locker is wrote "Mong Strength" both doors have this stencil on them. Any body any idea of its history from these clues
11. sad to say Scammell has gone to a new home just wish i had time to give it a good work out before it went Good thing is its gone to a well known scammell fan who is also a very professional recovery operator who will look after it and make sure it it gets worked to its maximum As a stop gap i have got a foden EKA to replace it this is just being started on today first job is to put a different cab on it ( cabs damaged and been left open to elements) and get it all running right. Next thing i will try and reduce its top heavy wieght and try and do something with that stupid underlift to make it more usefull in civillian life
12. It is used on a lot of the steel shipping containers 20ft 40ft etc it seems if you can weld a patch on eg mild steel it seems to promote oxidisedation in it and seems to last no time at all i hate the stuff
13. had a big ben as far as i am aware the engine gearbox and axles were thornycroft and never saw the likes on any other commercial i worked on the nubian i believe was the rolls rb81 series engine
14. Hi i mentioned it because i could see no way of operating the recovery gear. But as you say if recovery body on its way it will have controls built in. Truly green with envy of truck with that gear on and working it is even now the ultimate wrecker i would want when the job gets tough
15. just look at the picture a bit more and i think the recovery gear on the back is a dummy set up up as there is no way of operating it
16. painted in wynns colours but i bet never was in service with them with that kit on the back having said that Holmes 750 DT truck would parked sideways on and anchored would out pull a lot of modern day £200.000 trucks
17. i towed a vehicle today for a guy who had one in his yard who dont drive it on the road but he told me if you put the tape measure in the right place it is well under 2.5m. He said you should measure from out side rubber on idler wheels. Fraid that stops all aguments dead and he was serious ??????? Oh by the way it used to be if any post boxes are fitted on a vehicle these are not included in the measurement does this still count

19. no probs how high if you fall it is only the last few inches that kill you. Makes me go giddy looking at picture
20. Painter sent me a picture of my project. Think this should answer LoggyDrivers question from a long time about what colour its going to be. Unfortunately she is of to a new home when paintings finished. While try and get some better photos before it goes
21. I know i am boring people to death going on about over width non road legal vehicles but here is an example of what can go wrong. We where called out by the police to clear up after an accident. First vehicle was a car towing a boat on a home made trailer down the motorway and it had lost a wheel of the trailer. We where asked to recover the whole lot back to our works for examination. The second vehicle was on the opposite carridge way smacked into the central saftey barrier with a smashed screen and the roof torn back. This is the point were you might think whats this got to do with milatry vehicles and over width non street legal. The guy towing the boat trailer was under the impression that his insurance would cover him for all eventalitys after all he was a carvanner. He was towing the boat for a mate who had bought it in an auction. Police examination of the vehicles revealed the home made trailer (not the boat) had no working brakes and was 75mm over the legal width for a road vehicle. After an interview under caution the guy was charged with death by dangerous (what ever) the insurance company refused to stand by the claim the guy went through shear hell for 18 months while it came to court and on two occasions tried to take his own life So dont think i am only slightly illegal the insurance will sort it out they wont
22. Quick one is there enough room to get a simple disc on this imput shaft operated mechanicaly or hydrulically or even electrically as per modern cars For would only need to be small as overall gearing would provide efficency at tracks. Against drive shaft faliure would make it non operative there again faliure of transmission on any vehicle with transmisson braked vehicle would If there is room i think it would qualify as secondry braking system
23. Antar Mike i think the problem is that the majority of people on here recognise there is a problem. Alas the people who own them are the least willing to accept this fact They are content to say well so and so gets away with it so should i or its got a tax disc so its legal or they put up wishy washy arguments to divert attention away from the basic facts. All the time these people refuse to accept they have bought a pup and are driving about in illegal vehicles that could ultimatly cost them a lot more than a couple of points on their licence you are wasting you time suggesting any way round these problem,s. For instance have you noticed the original poster Firetrucker has hinted he may have a solution to the braking problem yet no one has what asked what this is. No i think the best way to approach this is to adopt the head in sand method and hope nothing serious ever happens. At least that way you can say "told you so" when there is a cockup that has far reaching effects on the hobby as a whole and every over width unroad worthy vehicle out there. Think the expression "none so blind as them that dont want to see" covers it
24. No i did read it right when Antar Mike said SVA "I am not Anti FV432. But I do think the brakes do need reworking before use, and I feel if someone where to rise to the task of applying for an SVA they may well get it. That would mean an FV432 still at 2.80m could legally use the road. It hasn't got any narrower but it has got more legal. I think, given an SVA 2.80m is sensible. I don't know why I feel unease because a vehicle doesn't meet C and U but it is the illegality that I find wrong." and i think a determined individual could go this route Also to answer question about difference between vehicle and load the limit has to be set somewhere else every body would be driving about in vehicles as wide as static caravans
25. my apologies i didnt read well enough what ever it seems the only sensible option open Now who or what group is going to test the water
