1. I rebuilt one of these a few years back so went mad into the history as one does. Even stripped it could not be picked up by helicopters in service at the time. The removable gear box cross member and 24v generator were some of the extra weight issues. Best Land Rover built but in the initial stages did not fulfil the stated purpose. Not sure what year the helicopter that could lift it came into service, got the book here somewhere :readbook:. Anyway the comment was made about, whether or not a mil vehicle was a pefect success in service does not really affect is collectable value. The RB44 may yet get it's own cult following
2. That's something I was wondering about also i.e. use after the war etc as often it gets lost in the glossy overview. Not that such things detract on the collectable value as a lot of military kit are like this. The Land Rover Lightweight was supposedly built to be helicopter liftable. But the Lightweight is heavier than the bog stock civilian model.
3. My memory is they were made for D-Day invasion. Did they have any service after that i.e. post war did the units retain them in service or were a one off item?
4. Forgot to ask as I noticed on the other thread the headstock was also modified. Is this a common problem and why? I am assuming that these bikes were only made to last a short time something wears out?
5. Yep that is a bit of luck as if oxy or arc welded, would have been a lot of hard work
6. These are the best we can find over here, just cheapy Mr Mark ones. They work, but hard work, you have to get as much spring length in the jaws as possible Another tip, have some 20-25 year old helpers who are keen to learn how.
7. I use a set of truck ones, but is both a scary and back breaking job. I destroyed two sets thus far which makes it even scarier Easiest way I found is to jack the axle up as high as you can get and start the spring compressing at that point. The petril pinz are slightly easier as you can fit a bigger plate under the spring. The front are the hardest, the rear on a 4x4 are thinner (air assisted) and the rear on a 6x6 is leaf (nice and easy)
8. Well sold the 4x4 to concentrate on the 6x6 Slow going as have most the parts, but suffer from lack of time. Was working on the spaghetti today :undecided: but a general clean up of the workshop as cr@p everywhere
9. perfect example is over here ie anything armoured has to be cut up, never a chance a civilian can touch it
10. I got sent this yesterday. Who needs a fridge at christmas time
11. What about one of those petrol operated steam cleaners? I know in the mining game up your way they used these to thaw out and dig out mining equipment. The cold does add an extra dimension of problems as for the inspection part they would have to build an enclosure around it and warm it up as putting your bare hand on frozen steel is not a bright idea. Anyway, take some piccies (of the snow as I only seen it twice )
12. Was going to say something the other day, but with the mad rush life has become time flies by What a good reminder that we should enjoy the silly season and Merry Christmas to everyone and a great new year. Hoping everyone gets what they need in their Christmas stocking e.g. : that much needed spare part the new pile of rust range wreck fantastic new project that special tool some Thornycraft bits A Lloyd's carrier fan etc etc
13. http://www.mil-vehicles.de/Seite-65 All in German but some interesting vehicles in there and a few other bits of interest
14. That vehicle has changed hands a few times in the past 3 years and as he states it has had an odd history. The starting price is a lot lower than it was 3 years ago, so is cheap for a P90 718. The Pinzgauer world is pretty small so when a vehicle pops up it's like "aaaaahhhhhhhhhh where I seen that before". There are a few P93 6x6's arriving in the UK now also http://www.shropshiregunbus.co.uk/default.asp?cat=latest
15. a picture here http://www.defencetalk.com/hawkei-australian-light-protected-vehicle-22262/
16. Cheers...... Changing from the 4x4 (716) to the 6x6 (718) has slowed me down as been spending so much time rebulding. I really want to go for a spin
17. yeah plastic gears inside, really cannot cope with temperature. I heard there was a company in the US that replaces them with steel gearing but cannot find the link now.

I have always liked the Kiev class aircraft carriers, so when I got a chance to have a wander around one I had to do it. This is the Minsk, now tied up in Shenzhen, China as a theme part. Sad to see such a nice ship decaying away and being used to sell handbags and other cheap rubbish

24. you can actually rate the thread, but I know what you mean often there is an individual post that is interesting or funny etc and often I dont want to make a comment in fear of cluttering up an excellent thread
25. What about a Kinderpanzer? Anyone found a set of blueprints yet?
